Discussion on bringing back S2 Plays

This is an open discussion about bringing back S2 plays (S2 vs the community). Here is what my response said in the ask S2 forum:

Well, as youve stated weve had S2 vs. community games before and they were awesome but there were some problems that came along with it. Specifically, there were issues on how community members were chosen to play, the variety of people playing, a big difference between the number of people that wanted to play and the number of people that could play, and other problems of this sort.

Ive actually been thinking about how I can properly re-activate the idea for a while and have been getting caught up on a couple of issues. Some of these include how we can get more people playing, how we can get a bigger variety of people and what is the best way to facilitate all of the games. Im actually making a general discussion thread right now about ways that you guys think we can do this better and after some discussion and ideas are brought forward, hopefully we will be able to find a way to make it all happen

Please give it some thought and help me find a way to bring it back to the community !!!!

I know I sit right next to you and could probably just relate this to you in person (BE JEALOUS COMMUNITY!), but this is way too fun to pass up.

S2 vs. the Community is something that has been on my mind for a few months as well. One idea I had was to sort of reward people who take part in some of the community-run events. So, if you're an active part of community events, that makes you an ambassador and someone we know we can trust to show up on time, be respectful, represent the game well, etc. Just the first thought that popped up in my head.

    GG Velma wins

An incentive is fine, though you will need top notch control, as this can be exploited. Control is also needed so that people are sufficiently rotated so people that haven't played in weeks get a chance.

Agreed, I want to make sure that it would never just become a rotation of 20 community members and everyone else is just on the sidelines watching.

I think the problem with S2 plays is that you never really know what to expect. When I was on a 1800+ account getting an S2 plays game was fairly easy (since the amount of players that high playing was lower) but you had to wait 20-30 minutes doing not much waiting for things getting set up. Friends playing 1500-1700 accounts met up for two for 1-2 hours without getting an invite to a single game due to 400+ people showing up. You also have no real chance of playing games while waiting for an opening since people are picked at random in chat, and people in games are probably not getting contacted.

The "show up and you might get an invite" is just not a really encouraging system unless you have a couple of hours to waste. Some sort of forum sign up or simple ingame queue system might improve the fun. In its past incarnation, though, I think S2 plays was super fun for the games I did have but probably annoying for a far greater amount of players.

This would be great, a fun stream and cast could make it a lot better. I was actually considering making the games hosted so that we could get 9 people in each game.

Ow yeah! wanna see (Artesia)Velma and (Corrupted Disciple)AceJR plays xD.
    And especially (Solstice)WzA .

But srsly, why not making a global challenge like last year?^^
Example: Win X times against S2 staff unlocks X stuff for everyone.

Personnaly, i never see Velma or Loremeister playing .

Note: If possible, i really wanted give a hand to this event^^.

    Edit: a Sticky will help^^.

I don't see why using MM queue to find opponents was a problem. Didn't you guys do this at one point? I feel like I saw s2 going in 5 man queues at different brackets and the 3 person map. Even if you don't have enough staff personally at s2 couldn't you use mods and other well known community members to help field some of your teams?

i think is fun to play against/with S2 , brings the developers closer to the community and that games are fun with no rage at all , it would be great if you give an icon or something if you beat s2 , that will make many people queue for tmm

    Just some off-the-top-of-my-head-brainstorming!

The only way I was ever able to do it was simply pick 4 new people to play with me each consecutive game. I know several other staffers did the same thing. Trouble is that this sometimes separated groups of friends depending on how you select people. I generally played with the first 4 folks to say they wanted to play whatever I was playing (Midwars!)

But, even if every single person in S2 did that we still wouldn't be able to play with everyone that shows up, and some people only want to play with a specific S2 member so that makes it even tougher!

While it would be awesome to be able to play with every single person that shows up it's just not something I see happening. I'd say the best way, in my opinion, is just to continuously run S2 Plays every week, maybe twice a week. I had a blast playing with folks, especially queuing up against other S2's randomly It will take a while but eventually everyone will get a chance. With some fun S2 Vs Community events thrown into the mix every few months.

Another fun way to pick players is with trivia! Completely random trivia like, Who sings Enter Sandman? Or who's the actress in Funny Face or Who is DOTA equivalent of Ogre Magi in HoN. First one to answer gets an invite

This is a good idea, but the luck i have this kinda thing never turns out good for me, it's a cool idea and all and with it being streamed, its even harder, i refuse to spam in twitch chats.

HoN based trivia would make some sense here.

great idea to reopen this! i personally loved to play.

i think if needed, it might even get more response from community members if you put it on another day, cause most people like to spend the weekend somewhere else. the previous s2 plays time was like friday evening for EU community.

another thing i thought about is how to pick members out of a really large pool of ppl playing. if possible, there should be some sort of MMR range, but i didn't like the concept of channels and spamming "pick meeee!!!1". perhaps its possible to implement some "ready up for s2 plays"-button, which puts you in SMM/TMM ready state for the event, and join up with a random s2 member.

Doing S2plays Manmode would be fun; i remember thats all us Aussies played for ages when the public aus servers came out and every game was great!

Note: Manmode is AR, no swaps, no repicks. It forces you to try new strategies and deal with what you're given and makes for some really entertaining games.

There was a secondary manmode we invented along the way as well which took a little more luck out of it. Mode is BP, however once all banning is done, everyone randoms, with no repicks or swaps (you can allow swapping if necessary) but this way you can at least eliminate certain heroes.

As for the organising of S2plays; You could make an entry fee of XX silver, which is refunded after the game, which would help weed out the players who say they will play but don't turn up. I personally would love to play a game or two against S2 in manmode =D (normal mode would be fun as well)

Why not have a continuous S2 plays thing every day. When a dev thinks they have time to play some HoN, they jump in the S2 plays channels and people can do the trivia thing to gain an invite. Maybe separate it by MMR and casual/regular mode and different maps. The only thing I see as a problem is that devs might not play enough. Make it an incentive within your company to maybe play 1 game a day at the least or maybe 2 games a week or something. That way people who can't make Fridays (me) can still take part in this and it's more balanced with the separate channels. Anyone have any problems with that? I would really like S2 Plays to come back.

Good old man up mode. (should be an extra option on aus MM just for it.) the only bad thing about S2 plays for aussies was it was at such an awkward hour, i just would stay up all night then sleep all day.

@Mudbutt as far as i know that was meant to be what the s2plays channel was meant to have become, instead of set time, when ever they were on they went there.
