Can it be done in another way than ally being low on life and under the effect of a DoT?
Mesmerize works, but i cant think of anything else
In the extremely rare case where your ally is Puppet Show'ed by an enemy Puppet Master and 2+ damage instances occur on your low HP ally (where 1 of them is the Puppet Show'ed unit) and your ally gets the last-hit. Puppet Show is supposed to be non-lethal, but I have denied people like this a few times.
Blood Hunter's Blood Crazy works too I guess

Look for my highlighted text (important information) and grey text (interesting but not required information).
Tossing them with Pebbles can work too.
ok, but with physical attacks they have to under DoT for sure to deny them. Right?
Ok. Thank you all for the answers.
Accursed can deny himself with Catuerize.
Same with devourer and Rot
If pebbles toss's an ally who has like 10 health he will die upon landing.
Succubus can use mezmerize to kill an ally.
not sure what else atm too tired to think.
I have denied players with normal attack. But did they change that?
oh lol, I like a lineup that can deny each other and themselves for the lulz
I wish you could deny Voodoo's cursed ground but since it counts as ticks of increasing magic damage does it count as a DoT?
I'm pretty sure you cannot deny a hero under the effects of Cursed Ground. I think i've had this happen to myself a couple of times. Cursed Ground is a DoT, it has two-second-apart ticks, and seperate constant ticks iirc. Nevertheless, you cannot deny someone who is affected by it. (Need confirmation)

S2 didnt think about that at all, so you have to ask the guy who was updating dota then (Guinsoo, Eul or someone else, idk).
But the reason was something like this:
Orginally (in dota) you could attack always attack allies, because thats how it worked in warcraft 3. But because this caused alot griefing, a trigger was added that stopped attacks against allied units. But because you could deny your allies before, they decided to keep that feature but made denying harder so that every kill could not be denied.
