I would like to suggest that a seperate sound channel configuration option is added for voice chat.
The main problems is that all output sound must be routed through a single channel (microphone, speakers, etc.). For those of us with mics, this means that voice chat is output through the same channel as music, sound effects, and interface sounds.
What I would suggest is the ability to set voice chat to a separate output device from other game sounds. This would allow us to only have voice chat communication over a microphone and still have game sounds routed to speakers, or any other source.
The main reason this is an issue is that it can be difficult to hear teammates over sound effects during battles, but turning game sounds off would leave the user at a disadvantage.
I'd like to bump this suggestion with some more detailed explanations.
TL;DR: Vote for this suggestion because for 25$, right now, you can have a sound system that works for all games and voice chat programs, and makes any non-voice sound quiet when someone talks. (It can also cap the volume so those pesky screamers don't hurt your ears, as well as raising the volume when they're too quiet - all automatically. See case 3)
It just won't work with HoN until this suggestion is implemented.
Example 1: Any modern console.
- Bluetooth headset
- Rockin' surround sound system
Any modern console allows you to use and listen to voice chat through a headset, while listening to all game sound from your speakers.
Result: No feedback, voice chat clear over explosions and other game sounds.
Case 1: Any computer with both speakers and a headset (USB or bluetooth)
- The user, in this case, has likely set his voice chat program of choice (Skype, TS, Vent, etc) to use their headset.
- The user then sets all their other sound to the speakers.
Result: No feedback, voice chat clear over explosions and other game sounds.
Familiar? Right.
Case 2: Any computer with Windows 7 and both speakers/headset
- The user sets his headset as voice in/out in his voice chat program, as well as making it the default communication device in 7's sound options.
Result: Windows 7 reduces the volume of any music/game sound when someone speaks. More effective than Case 1.
Problem: A little iffy.
Case 3: Any computer with a 25$ Soundblaster and KXAudio drivers.
- Using the KX drivers, the user programs (Simple to do) the sound card to silence music/game audio when voice chat is active.
Result: Can listen to music at full volume, voice chat quiets music and game sounds and can be heard without any problems. Sound quality is also better than most on-board sound solutions.
(I can write a how-to for this, it's bloody awesome)
HoN with case 3 currently:
HoN with case 3 and this suggestion:
The problem with all of them:
HoN does not separate in-game voice chat from in-game sound, so:
- Case 1 cannot set HoN's voice chat to his headset: HoN voice chat goes to his speakers.
- Case 2 cannot, again, set HoN's voice chat to his headset: HoN voice chat goes to his speakers, and is hard to hear under music and game sounds.
- Case 3 cannot set HoN's voice chat to to a separate device: The sound card does not silence music when someone talks in game. In fact, the sound card silences anyone talking in game when he speaks with anyone in his voice chat program of choice.
The very simple solution:
- Allow the user to pick a separate output device for in-game voice chat.
This involves adding one line to the options, and one dropdown, and whatever code for the audio system to pick a different device based on that choice.

I tried to request this almost half a year ago, not even a mention of it till now
http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/sh...ad.php?t=29371
I brought it up in tech support around that time, and also in the FE2 general suggestions thread (Where I had to argue with some random tryhard to convince him it wasn't about vent vs in-game voice)
But, hopefully we can get some attention on it here, it's a really simple suggestion that doesn't negatively affect anyone or affect gameplay at all.
Edit: Putting the suggestion link in your signature may help, I assume that's where you found this particular thread.

Indeed, it only has positive effect for people with 2 sound cards (USB headset anyone?) and people that dont, wont even notice the change.
Putting the link for this thread in sig too, lets get some attention to this.
Every single game that has VoIP integrated ingame i have seen so far has this functionality, why not HoN...

Bumping, had another game where I couldn't hear in-game voice chat.
Dude, I think that almost everyone would like this (the people who want to use this!).
I use a bluetooth headset and would greatly welcome this. I've been doing the same with ventrilo for 4+ years now.
Many Realtek cards also set up the front panel outputs (which is where most headsets are plugged) as a separate sound device too. I know several people that take advantage of this as well.
I don't have a USB/Bluetooth headset, but I've got audio outputs on the front (headphones) and rear (speakers) of my PC with Windows 7. Most programs (Ventrilo, Skype, Winamp, etc) allow you to select the audio device to use, so I generally put music and game sounds (during the day) through the speakers, with voice chat through my headset. While playing HoN, though, I can't do that.
This would be a cool feature to have, so I'm voting yes.![]()
HEY! I made a suggestion for this too! Glad I'm not the only one.
+1 for implementation
This is a fantastic idea. And you've just been made popular. Go suggest your thread to be upgraded![]()
