    Loggers Hatchet/Iron Buckler

As far as melee heroes goes (I can't imagine getting these on many ranged heroes), which heroes do you get these on? Do some not need them?

Since most lanes have one melee and one ranged that harasses, I find Iron Bucklers are almost necessary to prevent spamming your pots/runes if you want any last hits at all.

Same with loggers, I generally get it on every melee, as the damage really makes it hard for the enemy ranged to get last hits.

Finally, do you get these first? Or get them at side shops later? I find saving 500 for both of these items can be rough, especially with no loggers to help you out.

Ideas on these item's importance on the laning phase?

pretty much all melee heroes i go ahead and get loggers right off the bat, you could wait and get an extra regen item if you have the long lane or a courier, but i've pretty much switched to always getting it right away.

iron buckler i never get unless im building it into something else and i only build it into something else if im making an iron shield, so agi heroes.(i do get hotbl on legionarre, but that is it). Agi heroes I get iron shield on night hound, magebane, few others i think

with the gold from iron buckler you can get more regen items/go for a power supply that will offer more utility.

I tend to get hatchet on heroes that rely more on last hits/denies even more-so than other heroes. For example zephyr and bloodhunter. On heroes on pestilence (who are pretty much never mid so can pick it up at the sidelane) I usually get stats/regen and pick the hatchet up halfway.
I pretty much only get a buckler on agi heroes that can use iron shield well or heroes I want to go hotbl with at some point.

Edit: whenever I'm melee mid I get hatchet. And on deadwood to make his last hitting even more retarted.

Hatchet/Shield is generally a solo mid melee build. Blood Hunter / Pharaoh / Blacksmith / Madman / Deadwood etc.

Hatchet/stats is a babysat build as you have someone to harass for you.

Iron Shield is basically core on any agi carry though as it gives so much for so cheap and great buildup.

I usually get a Logger's, an Iron Buckler, and a stack of Blight Runes. As I'm out making money last hitting and denying, I buy the parts I'll need for my Abyssal. Scarab and ring of regen (if I'm going to build a headdress too, I get two rings of regen while i'm in lane - for staying power). This has ALWAYS worked well for me.

For some reason, I usually go hatchet/buckler on Scout, but on others like MB and Madman I take an iron shield and then get a hatchet from side shop soon as I can.

    I think both work well.

buckler/hatchet/runes on most melee heroes. Not many exceptions as the buckler gives you staying power even with a good babysitter you might need this. If im on a carry Ill decide whether or not I need to make that into an iron shield or go straight for lifetube, which generally depends on my farming requirement (how quickly I need to get my items based on their comp.. vs a push team extra minute it takes to farm the 300g for your ironshield might be 1 minute too long)

I'd say Hatchet is must for Devourer, not for last hitting power, but for chopping down trees to give you and your hooked partner more privacy.

I get hatchet on every melee hero, and shield on almost all of them. I dont usually start with shield though I typically buy it at the shop early on. If im mid with bloodhunter I buy shield hatceht and tangoes and rarely use the tangoes.

yes, but you're far better off with mana pots rather than a shield. having only one hook until you get bottle really sucks. starting w/ shield on devo is stupid.

Hatchet on just about every melee CARRY:
    :chro:

If you are soloing mid as something like I'd also pick up a hatchet. If you are not soloing mid I would wait and maybe pick it up in lane if I'm having trouble.

There are tons of melees you should NOT pick up a hatchet first these are usually support heroes or heroes who generally should get more regen/stats to be able to play offensively rather than farming:
    :jera:

On heroes like it's debatable since they do need a little bit of farm but I would suggest picking it up in lane after you've gotten a kill or two.

Iron Buckler is ONLY good on a few agility heroes such as and it's certainly skippable for the most part: :chro: and possibly

hatchet i get on every melee hero from the sideshop.

    i only get bucklers either:
    1. directly from start for jungle heroes
    2. from sideshop to build an iron shield which is useful for heroes like magebane.

Hatchet if I feel bad about last hitting with that particular hero.

Shield on squishy casters to gain survivability. Also on fatty-melee heroes, to be even harder to kill for the opponent. Also, a must on junglers.

I get Hatchet on just about every melee hero. For some with great base armor/strength () I skip Buckler for more regen, Totems, or Courier/Wards.
    This is a great thread.
