    DotA is dying

So last night a group of friends and I decided to play some DotA for shitz and grins.

We first tried Garena since that seems to be the easiest system and people don't leave as often (we could have TDA but we just wanted to pub).

Well, we were given a rude awakening.

The Garena servers, which 6 months ago were always teeming with players from almost every nation for DotA games, have become a ghost town. What was once a USA lobby full of 15+ 500 player rooms, now only has 1 room which it can barely keep full.

We spent over an hour waiting for games and it wouldn't even fill! We had to resort to 4v4s and 3v3s just in order to play o_O

We went on battle.net and it was a little better but boy, it's not what it used to be at all. It's a lot harder to find a game than before and they take awhile to fill up. EM games are pretty much your only options outside of leagues.

I even went to a popular DotA league website (www.throneit.com), whose goal only a few months ago was to
Host every DotA pub game on Battle.net
They barely had any games hosted at all.

Heroes of Newerth and League of Legends must be killing DotA; all I've got to say is, great job guys.

Indeed. HoN is simply DotA evolved. A stand alone game is much better than a player made add-on.

HoN still has a long way to go to gain the legendary status that DotA entails, however, entertainment wise, its leading the way.

DotA is on an outdated engine; of course HoN is going to eventually have more players.

Friends and I occasionally go back and play inhouse games when someone's computer can't run HoN... and holy hell I hate those hotkeys. Everything seems slower too.

Once HoN goes live and you have to pay for an account, I think a lot of the freeloaders will go back to DoTA just because they can't convince mommy and daddy to let them use their credit card.

Right now it's just too easy to get a HoN invite/beta key. There's really no reason to play DoTA if you can get a key, as it really has become an inferior game.

    Well, can you?

EDIT: Never really were a big Mr Bean fan, and especially not of the movie :/ Would probably have liked the movie a lot better if it had all been as good as that vid tho. I loved him in Secret Policemans Ball though, along with the pythons.

Dota aint dying, the official servers and Garena is dying. Garena is going backwards and the offical servers has horrible delay.

Unofficial servers like the one we have on South Africa still has +1000 players online at peak times and it's far more advanced than the orginal battle.net and without the delay.
    Punshment system
Level System so you can play with players with equal level.
Custom News section to keep players updated.
More and improved commands. For instance the /games command shows all the games up with their full name and amount of players in them.

Garena and official server are just one big mess full of quiters.

Although HoN, LoL and new multiplayer games did take a massive chuck out of the dota playerbase.
    Nightmarish
Custom Zombie Survival Map for HoN

Well 1000+ players online is cool and all, but nowhere near hon numbers.

And no wonder they took a big chunk, when an MMO can do it, just because its made by the same company and they slammed bnet with ads for it, then superior games of the same type should easily be able to as well.

I'll never understand why blizzurd could get so many RTS gamers to go to an MMO just because it was also made by blizzurd.

It's like if you have a favorite movie director or book author and they make a new product, you get pretty damn interested from association and try it out (since in WoW's case, there's a free trial). And hey, they find out that they personally like it and get hooked. There are lots of WC fans who love the RTS but don't like the MMO coz it's just not for them, the amount of people who just followed into WoW like sheep are relatively low, you either like MMOs or you don't, and WoW was a really good MMO for the person who has never played one before because of the graphics, polish, simpler game mechanics, and its catering of every style of player.

Yeah maybe. Still i couldnt play a dota game for about a year after its release without various WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWers chatting in the lobby about various stupid crap, and i quickly learned that if i just kicked them, game would never start.

"WoW was a really good MMO for the person who has never played one"

    This may actually be true.

But how on earth did they snatch up 11 million firsttimers then?

Or is it 8 million sheeple and 3 mill firsttimers? And in that case, how on earth did they snatch up 3 mil firsttimers?

Of World of Warcraft's 11.5 million subscribers (which has topped out, they haven't really gotten any bigger since 2008 but sustained the population since then, people just aren't joining, in fact Blizz said about 40% (iirc) of the trial accounts never make it past level 10), 6.5 million of them are from China. That leaves 5 million subs to split between US and EU.

You'd have a hard time convincing me that China is full of WC3 sheep for obvious reasons. The fact is Blizzard, like usual, was a marketing genius and created a game that fills a void China simply did not have in the MMO genre, which was something casual that could still easily be played in netcafes and such. They released WoW there at a genius time, every popular Asian MMO at the time was full of grind out the ass, but you could play WoW and be fairly competitive and strong without killing yourself.

That explains why the number is still huge, my other reasons fits the 5 million US + EU split as that number is still 5 times bigger than any other popular MMORPG before it. Quite simply, the game is average compared to the experiences of MMOs before it, but it is far easier to understand, Everquest has terrible graphics, odd hidden mechanics, catered to the hardcore player only, had confusing item descriptions for the newbie player, etc etc etc. Every MMO at the time was like that though, WoW was really the first MMO to say, you know what, this genre is going to die out if we only cater to the person who can spend a **** ton of time figuring it out, let's make a game that not only looks great but everything is relatively easy to figure out for a beginner to the genre and we'll support every type of player.

And each expansion keeps expanding that out, there's a little something for everybody, super casual soloing, casuals who want to do 5 man instances via the new Dungeon Group finder tool, crafter whores, achievement whores, people with a little bit of time who can do raids, people with even more time who can do Heroic raids, and the hardcore player who does Heroics with all the hard mode styled additions to it in like Ulduar and Icecrown.

That is why WoW is so popular atm. It doesn't seem original any more, but that is what made WoW original and so great, nobody had really done that yet, and as a result of WoW doing it and becoming popular, people have taken notice and tried to make their MMOs a lot more easier to understand etc. People aren't really being sheep to it, they just enjoyed the MMORPG genre after trying it out just because "hey Blizz makes decent games, I'll give it a shot!". There's also nothing else out that is essentially better, too many people doing more of the same. All a company needs to do to beat WoW is release something truly inventive (No NCSoft, flying does not count) that is very well polished on release (they're all too busy putting their hands in their pants copying WoW though).

    EDIT:
Also they got millions of first timers through marketing ofc, commercials, word of mouth from friends, etc.

    EDIT:
Also, yeah DotA seems to be dying more and more every day. I'm sure HoN/LoL are helping to kill it but as Narfle was mentioning it's been slowly dying out after every new Blizzard game release anyways. When SC2 releases you can basically forget about DotA for sure.

You mean people are finally tired of playing the same game since 2003?

    No way.

If only HoN had personal hosting. Living in a country where there isn't a specific server = 200 ping too bad.

HoN told me it would be the same as dota but better and more competitive. Dota with Delay Reducer was far more competitive than playing on a USW 220 ping server and being oh so aware when someone has below 50 ping. Even though HoN tries to hide the lag, it's so obvious that it's there when you compare playing practice mode (0 ping) to online.

Give us the ability to host games, so we can have competitive Aussie matches played out with 50ms ping, and we can truly develop a competitive scene. 5 people on 50 ping vs 5 people on 220 ping is not balanced. It's just like WoW, you can't react quickly enough to make up for that ping difference, and 2 equal skilled players = the lower ping one will absolutely dominate.
