Without reading anything at all about the hero I just tried out Defiler in a game, and I found the shroud was really useful for preventing people from properly running away. IIRC in DotA the spirits had issues attacking a running hero and it seems to be true here as well... still, popping in and out of invis so quickly greatly increased my survivability and the spirits definitely still work on stationary targets when you're invis.
Of course, I had for some reason grabbed Steamboots (wanted the survivability) so I really needed that movespeed boost. Also, it was a pretty low skill game and I'm sure it wouldn't work as well at the top levels.
Still, it was quite a fun option and next time I play her I'll definitely grab a Shroud after my SS.
Great guide! This is exactly how defiler should be played, although I'd get a supporter to buy the chicken for the team.
Actually for the items part, i've had some good results from making only icon of goddess and then going straight for frostfield plate without making sac stone. try it out![]()
What I said unintentionally came off really bad. Sorry. And yes, I haven't contributed any guides or anything amazingly useful to the forums but I like to think that in time, I will (I've dabbled around with ideas, but I never get anywhere useful).
Anyways, to expand on my point, I wasn't trolling or being an ass. Defiler has changed quite a bit recently due to the item changes. Going Enhanced Marchers -> Sacrifical Stone -> Behemoth's Heart is no longer effective on Defiler, yet, considering the guide is out of date, the build is still advocated. With people posting "great guide" and such two days prior, several days after the patch, it is possible that they are taking your core build to heart and applying it to an environment where it is no longer effective.
Enhanced Marchers would be switched to Steam Boots probably

Bloodstone just doesn't seem that good anymore; charges you give you an overkill of mana regen, it no longer provides any durability on charges, and it works well on heroes who have low cooldown abilities and would really appreciate the low respawn time. Defiler is not one of those heroes; her use in team fights and pushes generally revolves around her ult. Dying with your ult on, having it cancel, then coming back 20 seconds later when your ult is on cooldown is not ideal for Defiler.
Enhanced Marchers are now obviously worse for her than before, much worse, but the Armor and HP (or mana, early game) in one item of Steamboots is actually nice for Defiler, who appreciates 190 more HP and 5 Armor. (Post Haste could work too, for map mobility and better all-around movement speed). Heart is no longer worth getting as core or even fast luxury; it's just pure luxury now, as sort of a way to combine a Reaver and a Vit Booster into a single slot. It does, however, dramatically improve her ability to solo towers when she is backdooring and the whole enemy team is dead and so is hers. That's not practical though, so Heart is still nerfed.
Now she's going to get things like HotBL (possibly, I get this for cheap HP), Shaman's Headress -> Barrier Idol, Barbed Armor (possibly, works when being focused which she always is), the aforementioned Steamboots or Post Haste, 1-2 Fortified Bracelets, Homecoming Stone(s), Frostfield and a Kuldra after she has like 2k HP and 25+ Armor.
I don't think Bloodstone is "lol bad", it's just outdated. A good comparison would be Radiance on the new Zephyr (although that's probably a bit better, to be fair). It was the way to play a few weeks ago, but now there are better options for your money. Making the most of your money is very important on the "new" Defiler, who has tough choices ahead of her in itemization because her one-sizes fits all path was cut down.
After reading the updates, I'd agree with Steamboots. The bonus to movement speed along with the extra 190 health AND 5 armor is just too good to pass on for only 1400 gold.
I'll update the guide some time when I get home.
Core Items:
-Steamboots
-Fortified Bracelets
-Homecoming Stones
-Sacrificial Stone
I'd still go with Sacrificial Stone because of its ingredients. A Sustainer is an incredibly useful item for Defiler in early to mid game. The stone itself provides insane amounts of regeneration and life/mana which then prevents Defiler from dying in the first place.
Luxury Items (No specific order):
-Barrier Idol <-- highly recommended
-Frostfield Plate
-Totem of Kuldra
-Behemoth's Heart
Only thing about Sacrificial Stone is that it doesn't give extra HP regen/charge now. But yeah it's still a pretty good item on her

thats one reason why shouldnt get sacrificial stone and get null stone instead. if confident enough go straight post haste and skip enhanced march cuz power in death doesnt give ms anymore. frostfield plate is always good with defiler.
1.null stone
2.post haste
3.frostfield plate
4.behemoths heart
But -spell cooldown by 15% and +30 cast speed!

this is definately a noob question and might have been answered in the guide, but i couldn't find it.
is there any possibility to increase the damage of her spells by buying items?
