Anyone know of good replays with Melee characters doing well mid vs competent ranged mid characters?
This is a habit I want to look into, especially with strong mids like Pebbles, Deadwood and Pharaoh. I'm looking for solid tips. Are you harassing the opponent with skills? Are you just focusing on last hitting? Do you throw an occasional spell here or there at most opportune moments? Do you focus on staying in lane? Do you also go for runes (with bottle)? Do you just focus on getting EXP if the lane isn't worth fighting for? Do you gank as much as you do as if you were a ranged mid?
I imagine standard mid fare is Axe, Shield and Potion and get the courrier to get you more life ASAP, but I'm looking for any other tips someone might have.
i can't speak for the general rule, since i'm not that often in midd with a melee.
however as for pebb, you defenetly do not harass with your skills and focus only on last hitting, if your enemy makes a wrong move, try to instagib him (works quite well for tiny).
with pharao you can scare the enemy away, or try to help the other lanes with the souls
bloodhunter is quite simple, simply get the last hits for every damn creep!
For pharaoh u need mana regen, and no axe or shield, at least i play him mid that way, and am harassing+creeping with missle.
Blood hunter is the easiest melee solo mid. Get hatchet and shield, lasthit and deny everything. With a hatchet, your damage is so far above most ranged heroes (except a soul-stocked Soulstealer, and why the hell did you let him kill all that stuff?) that it's simple to achieve.
Forget harassing as BH, though. It's a good way to eat some nukes while you aren't feasting back anything and put yourself in a dangerous position. Don't need to harass anyway, since you'll just eat the whole creep wave easily. It's like... passive harassment.![]()
For Bloodhunter your focus is just to last hit and deny and gain as many levels as you can over your opponent. Usually if you can get to level 6 while he is barely level 5 you have a free kill in the lane and can begin ganking everytime rupture is up.
For every other mid hero your focus is on staying alive and nabbing as many last hits safely as possible. Most Mid heroes have strong combos and they scale really well to 6 so you are there primarily to get levels and instagib once you get to 6.
Appreciate what I've got so far. Let's not discuss Blood Hunter as Helen Keller can successfully mid as BH.
In Lane:
Strengths:
-Lolrocket
-High DPS scaling with Hellfire
-Huge range blinkstrike for ganking at level 6
-High base damage
-Good base armor
-Good base HP
-High Movespeed
Weaknesses:
-Melee
-No escape early on
For levels 1-3 your focus should be on last hitting and denying, most heroes won't be able to harass you out of the lane with good creep pulling, generally anywhere close to your side of the hill is extremely safe and mid river is reasonably safe. Generally people don't want to creep pull too much as it causes their next wave to be pushed up so you should be able to keep the equilibrium fairly well.
Use rocket for last hitting and harassing judiciously in the early levels, its damage to mana ratio is not very good and you may be better off using it for sight or stacking neutrals for your carry, after level 3 it starts to give you better lane harass.
At level 3 you can start using it in lane more liberally for last hits and harass with its wide arc, try to set up two creep kills with each rocket you fire as few people will be able to deny in the 120 damage range. If you can get your bottle ferried to you by level 4 you can use the pushing aspect of rocket spam to help you rune whore.
By level 6 you should have boots, bottle, and branches or mana battery and your lane is pretty much a free kill if you soften the target a little and then ult/hellfire while the creeps are dead, otherwise if your opponent is playing conservative switch lanes and gank the side ones and let someone else free farm.
Pharaoh early on has good hp growth and base damage and wins the lane by having good balance between last hits and harass. He is mostly there to power to 6 and start ganking, he may be able to harass his opponent out of the lane but that isn't a priority. This is actually true for a lot of melee mids, they're hard to force from the lane and are there mostly to power to 6 to begin being effective.
Take for instance:
Is more of an offensive mid, he can explode a lot of unsuspecting mids at level 4 with his combo and has extremely high base damage early on for last hitting. The downside is that he has extremely low base armor and is very susceptible to basic harass.
the whole idea behind dw is your damage range is ridiculous. you'll probably lasthit/deny every creep without really trying. there's no race to see "whos projectile gets there first". with a hatchet and a tree you're leagues above their damage range.
Pebbles mid is,I think, one of the hardest mid melee heroes. As everybody now picks Forsaken Archer and goes mid, she's not really that squishy,so u wont kill her in Chuck + Stalagmites combo, and ur too slow to chase.I find the best mid melee is Devourer.Simply rapes 90% of other mid heroes.Even more![]()
No one mentioned madman?
Use stalk to get last hits + harass
ferry your bottle to you asap, keep rune control since you can beat nearly everyone to the runes (exception being hag and magebane)
By lvl 4 or 5 you should have gotten them low enough for a stalk + barrel role combo to take them out or nearly...giving you free farm for a little bit
Start roaming when you get some items
forsaken archer is amazing vs solo mid heroes, cept for bh, since her skellies will be able to hit the melee heroes all the time, thus perma applying the dot.
i'll list the meele heroes i do not want to see mid:
and except for electrician and the wooders they still would be usefull gettin solo xp.
