A fun template which works pretty well is:
1- static grip
2- energy absorbtion
3- energy absorbtion
4- mana shield
5- energy absorbtion
7- energy absorbtion
8- mana shield
9- mana shield
10- mana shield
12- static grip
13- static grip
14- static grip
With item build:
- ghost marchers(if you need more speed) or steamboots (if you need to tank more in early game)
- shaman headdress => barrier idol
- staff of the master
- sacrificial stone
- frostfield plate
You can complete it with behemot's hearth (hp = regen hp) / shrunken head (magic immunity + hp) / null stone (mana regen & spell protection) / mock of brillance (fun). It depends of your needs.
I almost always do in this order:
(1) minor totem + trinket + courier
(2) refreshing ornement -- refreshing done
(3) 2 trinket
(4) helm of the victim
(5) boots + magic vestments -- headdress done
(6) you finish your boots -- boots done
(8) neophyst book + glowstone
(9) barrier idol (recipe) -- barrier idol done
(10) mighty blade + lifetube -- sacrificial stone done
(11) Acolyte's staff
(12) platemail + frostfield recipe -- frostfield done
-- most of the games are nearly end & won if you did that --
In early game try to last hit & harass ennemies with your energy absorbtion (EA) soon as is up.
You can do that without troubles because:
- your EA don't require mana if you hit 4creeps with or 1hero + 1other target.
- with the item build you have 11hp/sec in early game.
because of that you will get a lot of gold and your ennemies will often be low hp (and always be very nervous).
Your main problem is you are pushing the lane, so don't forget to neutral pull to get the lane back.
Why shaman headdreass before boots?!
with EA you got +50speed so, as you have enought mana, you can have +50speed. If you are smart you should never go under +250mp in early game. (EA + grip 250mp)
Why staff of the master?
Just because it's cool to 60%slow&debuff the whole ennemy team or speed&purge your wounded and save their ass.
BTW it gives you some intellect and mp, so it's good to get.
Why the hell you skill shield mana before static grip?!
because static grip 4 is almost useless in comparaison with mana shield 4, I explain.
You only get +20dmg/sec & 0.75sec per static grip lvl. It cost you 100 mana and may put you oom (that makes electrician useless).
With a mana shield you can ALWAYS do 48dmg around you (not only 4.5sec), and provide you a huge resistance (0.75mp for 1hp!). That's equal to a mock at lvl10, don't forget it
Why no helm of the black legion?
Yes you could get one if you want but it's not really useful if you have a good mana regeneration and mana pool. It's a lot better to get shaman headdress intead of helm, it's just imba against casters.
I only take it when the other team don't do any magical damage. (rarely)
edit: sorry for my english, I did my best but I know there are some mistakes.

Only problem is ANY damage sent your way and you lose your mana, especially if you have not got to level 4 in mana shield.
Getting shield early and using it in fights is unstainable. It is good for farming but then you end up pushing to fast and you are fighting under their tower which is a bad move.
4 - mana shield
4 - Grip
Then proceed with your build. It is usually your team mates applying the lube (doing the damage) while you hold them down and bend them over. The extra level of grip helps with that.
Nice guide mate! Although i admit that i am very lazy reading all the comments of 11+ pages. I keep playing my Electrician like the following:
At the first phase of the game, you can easily go for 2 Pretender Crowns and Runes of blight for staying in the lane. As soon as you grab your first money, you can rush a LifeTube+Manatube. This gives you a huge advantage over the rest of the heroes, since you can effectively spam Energy Absorption and either a) Harass the enemy with Grip+EA or b) totally farm your lane and any nearby jungle creeps. After that, you can grab your standard Marchers for that needed movement speed boost.
From this point on, considering you have participated in ganks and somehow you've net couple of kills and assists, the game starts to speed up for you and your farming. I decide that as a tank the Mana shield is very good and covers up any tanking items you might need in the mid or late game by actually spending your money in hp/regen items.
A good end Build would be Armor Boots, Restoration Stone and either a) Null Stone against caster teams or b) Sacrificial Stone against the rest, or both!
Considering i have never reached that kind of game phase, the only furthest i could go was Armored Boots, Resto Stone, Null Stone and couple of Bracers.
In reality, your tank comes out from your big healthpool+hp regen and your very fast mana regen that supplies your mana shield.
The restoration stone is a very good utility that helps in multiple ways. You can: Grip+EA next to an opponent and then reverse the combo by doing EA+Grip. Your ulti will make sure that either the opponent is not going anywhere or that you are going to avoid any ganks by applying the ulti twice on you!
That's my 5 cents to you guys. Feel free to comment on that gameplay but be respectful .
