How about a map with grimms walls seperating the 2 halves instead of a river?
Paths open for the creeps, of course.
The grimms walls (like a Great wall of China) span the whole map, but the segments are destructable.
The wall causes a Fog of war (you can't see what's on the other side, unless you follow the creep path through to the other side, or break down a section of the wall & go through)

or have walls around a base toggleable for tournies at game creation that only creeps can destroy- so that you can't backdoor
