A Plea From A Developer

Let me start off by saying S2 has done some incredible things to make this game accessible and open to developers. Not many other games have the opportunity for such heavy; modding, skining, sounds, textures and more. And many players take these things for granted.

S2's XML API. For those of you that don't know, there was a system that enabled us developers to create beautiful HoN related content by pulling players stats and other information from their database. With this data, HoN stat sites arose which gained quite a bit of attention and user traffic. They were great tools to see the hard numbers. And the use of the XML API is not just limited to stat sites! It can lead to innovation and new ideas that all revolve around the game we love.

On March 1, 2012 the system was taken down and I do not believe any news of it has been mentioned of since then. My reasoning for this post is to let S2 know we, the HoN community, support them. And that there is a desire for the XML API system to return. I'd hate to see this opportunity, for S2 to enable their players to create content that is centered around their game, to suddenly disappear and never return.

Hopefully some of you care about this too.

it's still funny they haven't removed the "Player ladder" tab from the toolbar at the top of the web page. clicking it gets you into a page that says:

404 - Page Not Found

This page made like the scout and... stole a kill? No! Went away when you needed him most.

My humble guess would be that the XML access somehow posed a security risk to their system and was taken down untill a secure solution can be made, but that's just my guess.

I would even be fine if they offered a solution which required a secure system using oAuth that required an API key. (Plus this could enable them to shut down overzealous scrapers).

It would also reduce load on their master servers, from the bots people have written to scrape those.

That's a genious idea! The oAuth account information could even be your HoN details, and your account gets "developer/stat retrieval permissions".
