Why LoL has SO many more players than HoN? It's a damn **** game. WTF?
everyone I ask who played it agrees. I tried it myself, it's like a mario-style version of -em HoN/DoTA for little girls/kids.
(don't get me wrong, mario is awesome, but that's not really fitting the genre)
First off aesthetics have nothing to do with gameplay.
Second, its because when HoN started it never ever advertised, cost money to buy and was fairly 'hardcore'. LoL on the other hand was casual, 'free' and catered to those people who play RPGs that are advertised at the side of websites (which LoL did).
The sign of lost Carcosa appeared in the air, paralyzing us with dread older than the very idea of time.
As we looked on in horror, the unholy sign dissolved into a lone figure, shrouded in yellow.
Cuz it's easy.

Dude there's been so many threads saying the same thing you're saying and the responses are always the same
not saying I don't agree because I do but how many times do people need to ask the same question and get the same
answer for you to just stfu about something you can't control?
You want to change that? Suggest something in the suggestion thread, Discuss balance in the balance thread, make a new mechanic in the mechanics thread.

It's not a rant, it's an honest attempt at understanding. Clearly HoN is a better game, while maybe far from best, LoL is a game for kids and it genuinely surprises me that so many people prefer LoL.
But then again many people like justin bieber over real music...
I dont understand it aswell. Even the competitive scene there is bigger, still the game is retarded.
Of course everyone you asked agrees, you probably only asked hon players. Why would anyone play hon if they thought lol was better?
Don't get me wrong, I played lol for a while when HoN was being DDOSed and I hate that game with a passion but you have to be pretty stupid to not understand why it has more players.
easy, 'free' crap all innovation and a limited amount of different ability types. most people will always take the path of least resistance. If i were a muppet, id probably want to fight other muppets. If you come to hon you gotta swim with the big fish.
Ah, HoN elitism at it's finest once again. Fine, LoL has a lower skill ceiling but so what? Most people will never reach the top even with it being lower so what difference does it make to non-competetive players? And it's not that low anyway. I've heard the "LoL is checkers and HoN is chess" thing when it's more like LoL is chess and HoN is speed-chess. Neither game can be played by the braindead.
casuals
casual gamers everywhere, which is why more recently your seeing developers either cater too them or make really difficult games to cater to the more typical "gamer" /hardcore crowd, when theres only 1 challenging game out there and your looking for a challenge that game is going to earn some $$ plus you establish a great fanbase, casuals will jump ship like no tommorow which is why all the casual gamers are about progression and this progression ****s with your mind and essentially ties you down.
why would anyone want to leave LoL when your max level, have tons of runes, all the champions, several skins, etc, you wouldnt and thats how they sucker you in and keep you, WoW's done this for years it's nothing new by any stretch, the second you finally say "im done with this game, cancel sub for life" all that time you put into the character(s)/account becomes essentially void, all you keep are the memories.
As Tyrando said, the reason why LoL has more players is because they were F2P from the beginning and its way easier for people to actually be useful. LoL is in my honest opinion a shitty game where everyone can be counted as a mediocore player. Its different from HoN in the fact that you dont have to care of being ganked, because its very less likely that you can die from one person in that game. All you have to do is stay in your lane and push towers, it works wonders in that game.
Chinese investors buying out Riot and a casual game will do that.

Consistency. They had a clear goal in mind, and they set out to achieve it. They made partnerships that pushed their agenda in the exact direction they were headed.
Contrast with HoN. Who are their professional partners? HoNCast? Hahaha.
The reason is quite obvious if you look at it simply.
I think a secondary reason may be that Riot is probably more bureaucratic. HoN is privately owned by one person. Everyone answers to him. Nobody is above him. Maliken wants, Maliken gets. This may be a good or a bad thing for working conditions, depending on who he is. I don't know him, thought, so I couldn't say. I do, however, believe there was an article by I think Jason (former S2Jason), who said that Maliken often intervened with the creative process, effectively vetoing other ideas for his own. I also believe some of the older programmers left S2 a while back for personal reasons, which may or may not have had anything to do with Maliken, and with a system as big as HoN, losing programmers is a pretty big deal. Hiring new programmers on an existing project is incredibly difficult, and I suspect this has something to do with the degrading quality of the game (replays, XML API, etc).
