Being popular is definitely not an opinion, being cool however is subjective. Larry the Cable Guy is popular, however he is not cool or funny (my opinion). Russel Peters however is hilarious (again my opinion)

Social status exists in all environments with groups of the same species.

    Ya dig?

I think my school is probably the best example of it. Everybody was split into their own groups an I never really saw the groups mingle until we got an exchange student. You would most likely eat lunch with the same kids from middle school up into high school. The jocks hanged out with the jocks. The pretty *****es hanged out with the pretty *****es. The less popular girls hanged out with the less popular girls. The nerds hanged out with the nerds. Hell even the "GT" gifted an talented kids hanged out with other gifted an talented kids.

People always complained that our school was absolutely horrible. Some kids actually left our school because they couldn't stand the seperation. If you were unlucky enough to be an exchange student then you could very well go without a group of friends to talk to until the next year.

I went to a private school from 9th-11th grade and the whole stereotype you saw on those teenage flicks was there. We had the "popular guy crew" of approximately 15-20 people (proud to say I was part of it, lol), and then you had the popular/slutty/hot girls. Then you had some social rejects, no lifers, and others.

The thing is, high school doesn't matter - unless you're in high school.

my graduating class was almost 600 people. and it was almost exactly like the movies. cept the non-popular kids tended to intermingle between groups quite often (atleast i did)

The real popular kids are those nice, great, kids that were ready to talk to anyone about anything, be a friend to anyone, smile, etc. The charismatic ones. Popular kids were typically the ones who were either the most 'mature' (as in, doing things that were more typical of older people or sometimes adults and not reflective of responsibility). Often, they would make themselves appear superior by putting others down and being intentionally exclusive. They also were usually the more attractive kids, which is perhaps why they were more.. revered.
