I have seen Keg + mines build in solo mid quite effective. Place mine use keg and the enemy lefts with 20% hp repeat and force them to go to fountain or if they are bad kill them.

There's no better feeling than spending your precious time to set mines up instead of farming then having a Monarch and BH die trying to gank you. I mostly play engi for fun not competitively. I just love messing with people's minds. I was solo-ing Hellbourne long lane and purposely set up a few mines in the center just out of range of my tower. Purposely blew them up to let them know I have mines in the middle of the lane. I go out of the creep wave sight to place mines to the far left and right sides of the tower, touching the tree-lines on both sides. I let them get hits on me to the point of being irresistible to give chase. They split up exactly where the mines are instead of directly chasing me because of the feint I played earlier. Just as planned.

Yeah, as the above poster said; the thing about mines is that as much as they might not be the best strategy then they are just that fun to play with.
It's been some time since engi was reformed but I STILL tend to snicker every time a hero insta-blows up when straying too close to the mines.

He is the only hero that has a very effective trap that he can lure enemy heroes into and be very successful by himself.

Baaaah, since we're talking about mines and that I miss goblin techies so bad.. Here's an anecdote!

Back when I played dota, I used to buy branches (minor totem), set a bunch of mines somewhere, then place token on it.. Good time ^^

It worked once per game, then I would put a branch elsewhere, no mines. I like to think they bought reveals for them but eh, never could prove it :P
