    Introduction

I've created this article to share an unparalleled collection of knowledge that exists among Heroes of Newerth's higher tiers of competition. It is not designed as a specific guide for heroes or items, but rather a generalized guide of tips and tricks that can be quickly absorbed by newbies and veterans alike. I want you, and hopefully many other volunteers, to not only read this but also contribute and reply with tips containing concrete information. Information that is not typically subject to change from patches etc. Tips should be short and sweet, one-liners, around 15-20 words (with some rare exceptions). I will also update false information that has slipped into this article based on constructive feedback.

This is a work-in-progress, and will be worked on when I have time. I will try my best to keep up with new HoN content released by S2 Games as it arrives. So, please! contribute your tips and I will update this OP as I feel necessary.

Also please note that there is no definitive way to organize such an extensive list - I will listen to your feedback regarding more optimal organization methods, but in the meantime I'll just try to make it as painless and pretty as possible.

    General Tips

    Beginner

    • Use Wards of Sight to gain critical map information and monitor your enemies movements.
    • Learn your Hotkeys! You can even rebind them to your liking.
    • If there are no creeps within a creep camp at :00 they will respawn.
    • There are two forms of Superior Magic: Application and Damage.
    • Superior Magic Application is a Magic effect that cannot be prevented or removed.
    • Superior Magic Damage is Magic Damage that cannot be resisted.
    • Some spells have either Superior Magic Damage or Superior Magic Application, or both.
    • Always carry a Homecoming Stone; use it to defend your towers, juke and port to avoid a gank or escape enemies without a stun.
    • You can buy Wards, Health Potions and Mana Potions from the Observatory.
    • Many hidden paths can be revealed when cutting down trees and can be used to aid you in your ganking and juking efforts.
    • You can queue up commands by holding Shift; one of the first things you should learn to queue is the Courier.
    • Runes can be denied, even by pets or illusions.

    Intermediate

    • Avoid the stun from Myrmidon's Magic Carp by stopping when the carp impacts you.
    • A Mana Battery or Power Supply will charge quickly against an Armadon on the enemy team.
    • Double-tap a dually beneficial, targetable ability or item's hotkey to cast on yourself; i.e. Succubus' Mesmerize, Stormspirit.
    • Stack creep camps by initiating a creep camp pull between :53 and :56; this will remove them from their camp at :00.
    • A maximum of three sets of creeps in each creep camp can be stacked simultaneously.
    • Several heroes have abilities to prevent creep camps from spawning; i.e. Engineer's Spider Mine or Emerald Warden's Overgrowth.
    • Portal Key has a three second cooldown if damaged by a player controlled unit.
    • When crafting Steamboots, you can substitute the Bolstering Armband with Fleetfeet or Apprentice's Robe (Outpost item).
    • Any item not requiring a recipe to craft can be disassembled.
    • Fighting downhill not only gives you better vision than your opponent, but also 25% evasion.
    • Fighting uphill (is really ****ing bad)...I mean...well, you know, it's just not smart to do.
    • Deny an allied hero if they have a non-superior DoT effect on them to prevent the enemy from gaining Gold and XP.
    • There is a lesser-known damage multiplier called Combat Type. Click the link for more info.
    • Use Illusion Runes to trick your enemy into wasting mana, gain critical map information, or confuse your opponent in a team fight.
    • Illusions and pets are great for helping to destroy gadgets with a set amount of attacks allowed; i.e. Arachna's Ulti, Wards, etc.
    • Use pets to pull the enemy's pull camp into their creep wave while your team assault's the 1st tier tower in their short lane.
    • You can cut down a tree above the Legion's pull camp allowing you to fight two creep camps at the same time.
    • There is a tree above Kongor that the Hellbourne middle player may cut down to gain access to the Observatory.
    • Parasite, Plague Rider and Tempest can deny a creep from the first wave; best utilized on a melee creep in a solo players lane.
    • Use pets to scout ahead in common trap areas; they might trip enemy Spider Mines or Overgrowths.

    Advanced

    • Neutral creeps killed directly in their creep camp after :37 will not respawn at :00. (or :39? confirm please)
    • Support heroes should stack creep camps for the carry heroes on their team.
    • The real trick to understanding HP/Mana Regen and Consumption, is knowing that stat gains/losses are %based, not static.
    • Change Steamboots to Stength when losing HP, Intelligence when losing Mana, and Agility when gaining Health and/or Mana.
    • If it is safe to do so, drop any Strength and/or Intelligence items on the ground when gaining Health and/or Mana.
    • Switch Steamboots to Agility while sipping from a bottle or using health/mana potions to maximize health and mana pool gains.
    • Attack an enemy hero to aggro their creeps and move them to a more advantageous position.
    • You can cancel your abilities by hitting the "Stop" hotkey mid cast (S by default), to fake out your opponents.
    • Valkyrie's Javelin and Devourer's Hook are examples of abilities that can be cancelled. Try experimenting with other heroes.
    • Use pets to remove on-damage effects; i.e. Succubus' Mesmerize and Gauntlet Blast.

    Miscellaneous

Feel free to add me in game on my tag Hanthion or Chlovis!
Some day I might post my twitch account on here but for now I don't stream often. Perhaps if I get enough requests I will.

I also plan to post useful links here but I'd like to see my thread grow a bit before I send away viewers!

    Final Notes

This article is a partial collaboration of Nytemair's retired thread, and as such, I'd like to thank Nytemair for such a massive contribution. Although 100% of Nytemair's info has been transitioned here, this is a link to Nytemair's retired thread http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/sh...t-suck-at-HoN!.

I'd also like to personally thank Clytemnestra for helping me throughout the construction phase of this thread. Clytemnestra provided a list of useful links that you can find in a reply below, as well as a nice list of tips contributing directly to my post. Thanks Clytemnestra!

And most importantly, I'd like to thank each and every individual who has replied and contributed to this thread. Keep up the good work!

Often times I use a certain article of food my mother used to pack for me in a bagged lunch to eat at school each day to find inspiration. That article of food was a Red Vine Liquorice and it taught me to never give in, to endure the hardships we go through every single day, and most importantly - to persist. I loved eating that Red Vine every day and I want everyone else to love it to - so on three I want everyone to shout "Red Vine"...1...2...3...Okay that's only a partially true story (although I'm not opposed to Red Vine chants because Red Vines are delicious) but this thread does have a lot of good info in it from a lot of good people so I just hope that everyone can appreciate it all and hopefully, like me and my Red Vine, find the inspiration to contribute to it.

Thank you for that link onesantaplz.

I don't want to discourage others from posting links to tips and useful information because your link is great and very useful and I appreciate that.
But most of igotthis's tip of the day videos are minutes in length each.
Keep in mind, the goal of my list here is to provide 100s of tips that you can read and learn in minutes.

Are you going to be doing just item/skill tips?

  8. #8
Blackbird, no I'd like to see a variety of tips from all aspects. For example, heroes that counter other heroes would be a good tip idea.

1)Swiftblades ult will mini stun the first target, making it good to interrupt channeling skills. (goes thru bkb)
2)Plague riders ult will mini stun the first target, making it good to interrupt channeling skills. (goes thru bkb)
3)Nullstone will block global ultimates like flux, sw and tb.
4)Check if enemies have heroes like armadon, bombardier and tb before buying nullstone. They have so easy mechanisms to get it off. Also think first before getting it against tundra/dw/pebbles because they can easily get their main spells off.
5)Moraxus arcane shield will block even a bit weird spells like ews wolves, devourers hook etc.
6)Geomancer can use pk when digging making it awesome initiation tool. You will stun the are where you pk if you blink from middle of a dig.
7)You can use spells like ews traps or engis mines to block jungle camps, to counter junglers/making pull spot unpullable.

    Theres some advanced tips

E: I will most likely add more in here so check this regulary, gotta go now

    * Geometers Bane (When used) is a great item for canceling dmg over time spells like Sliter's Posion Spray and to get out of KoTF's ultimate.

    * Magmus Steambath can be used to avoid target spells like Andromedas Comet Stun

    * If you kill a neutral creep inside it's spawning area after the :37 (or :39, not sure) mark the creeps in that spawn will not respawn the next new minute.

    * If you attack a neutral creep inside it's spawning area between the :53 and :56 mark and make sure all creeps follow you there will spawn new creeps inside that area the next new minute resulting in twice as many creeps in that spawn.

    * If your having a hard time pulling creeps beacuse you don't know when to attack, use the time marks xx:16 and xx:46

    * Pay attention to the mini map, if all enemy heroes are missing and you are far away from your nearest tower/your allies it might be a good idea to get back since a gank might be incoming.

    * If you are playing as deadwood and the enemy have a nullstone throw your tree at them (to remove the nullstone) before using your ultimate

    * Good ward placement will win you games

I like the idea, maybe you should have a look at the Youtube Series "Things not everybody knows". Its from Baumi, I think.

The above mentioned are wrong though, just wanted to point that out. You can't use tablet to disjoint the roots, you can use geometers though. And Blade Frenzy does not get interrupted by Face Smash, it just goes through it (since its physical). You're welcome

Geobane removes bottle effects and all buffs, also debuffs you from minor debuffs.
Gemini's passive (double attack effect) can crit with riftshards too!
After an ally has casted gladiators ult, you can't use blink for 7 seconds. (portal key).
Gunblades physical dmg nuke does not affect barricade units (the wooden catapults).

    Ackwell1's info added, thanks!
    SimplyEvert's info added, thanks!
    Uroefl's info added, thanks!
Thanks for all the links Clytemnestra!

Insane2k, you should definitely provide a link to Baumi's YouTube series. Also, I know tablet used to disjoint KotF's ulti, and Panda's ulti used to cancel Swift's Blade Frenzy. I haven't performed those actions myself in awhile though, can you test those out for me by chance? If not, can someone else confirm that these no longer work? I'd just like a 2nd input before I go changing things based on one person. I'll add a confirmation request to the OP.

Thank you for everyone's contributions thus far. This is turning out to be exactly what I was hoping it to be.
Eventually I am going to organize the tips based on categories like "Swiftblade Tips", "Jungling Tips", "Nullstone Tips", "General Tips", etc.

Keep up the great contributions and don't be afraid to dispute any of the information you see. I promise I'll get around to it eventually.

**OP is completely updated to this point**

The reason behind not being able to use pk after glad's ult is because glad's ult takes half the damage you would have received, and puts it off until a few seconds after. Effectively you can take 800 damage when you only have 600 hp, and live, but as you're running away, your hp will drop to 1, since it's non-lethal damage like slithers. You took only 400 damage during the fight, and the other 400 is done a bit after the ult. During this time, since you're taking damage, you can't PK for obvious reasons. Glad's ult doesn't make it so you can't blink, there's just a period of additional damage you take after the ult.

For organization, perhaps you should start to seperate it by hero/item. Also, you can group some things together, like "Moraxus's Arcane Shield can also absorb: Devo Hook, Emerald Warden's Wolves, etc"

Blackbird, does Glad's ulti indeed prevent allies from using PK? It sounds like you're saying that it does prevent enemies from using PK because of the residual damage dealt after the initial impact. Can you confirm for me 2 things: Does Glad's ulti prevent allies from using PK throughout the entire duration from cast to impact or longer? and Does Glad's ulti prevent enemies from using PK from cast to impact or longer?

That's all I really need to know, if you'd like to elaborate and explain more about the duration and exactly when it prevents PK (at cast? at impact? etc..), I'd appreciate that.

It deals damage after the ult has ended which prevents pk from being used.

Summons a Chariot 1000 units behind The Gladiator that travels 2000 units in the direction it was cast. Any allies near where it passes have Call to Arms applied to them for 5 / 6 / 7 seconds.

When it reaches the end, it deals 300 / 400 / 500 Magic Damage and stuns all enemies in a 400 radius for 1 second.

Grants 800 day and night clearvision for 6 seconds around the Chariot.
    Rallied! Effect(s)

    • % Movement Speed: 10
    • Damage taken is halved
    • Prevented damage is taken over 5 / 6 / 7 seconds at the end of the buff and is non-lethal.

Read the description and you'll get what I mean.

a funny thing i use on devourer.if you have a chalice and get ganked/amubshed against a lot of people you can deny yourself by using chalice+decay.chalice will get you to 1 hp and decay will deny.with a bit of practice you can deny yourself a lot of times rather than give the opponents kills.a self-deny will keep your kill streak and doesn't count at the score at the end of the match.

    moraxus shield will also block
    -bombardier's bomb
    -gauntlet grapple
    -gunblade crippling slugs
    -ravenor ball lightning
    -chipper rockets
    -VALK JAVELIN!!!
    -global ults like NULLSTONE does(sandwraith,flux,tb,vindigaytor)
