How long til all the HoN heroes are free to play for new accounts ?

Dunno if I'm allowed to link this but doing so anyway ! ))

    http://blog.dota2.com/2012/06/introducing-the-dota-store/

My first thoughts; HoN is pretty screwed unless S2 drastically changes their model - even if HoN is a much better game (in my opinion) then people aren't going to play it when a similar and more popular product offers a much much better deal..

PS; expecting people to pay tokens for non-AP modes has always been completely retarded
PPS; please change the play now! button so completely new players are somehow encouraged to do tutorial / play no-stats before diving in..

Having all heroes to play for free is a terrible model imo, but the tekken style buy cosmetic pieces to add to your hero isn't a bad idea, but wouldn't pay gold for, but grinding silver for it would be worth while

All of the heroes will be available free of charge. We believe restricting player access to heroes could be destructive to game design, so it’s something we plan to avoid.

S2 needs to take this approach to their game. You actually have to PAY money to play game modes such as Banning Pick and Single Draft.

I don't know where S2 is supposed to get their income from - but since all heroes are free in Dota2 that's a pretty huge incentive not to play HoN unless you already have a legacy account..
I don't think S2 can afford not to have at least 90% of heroes free to play if they want to compete.

S2 already announced they are changing the size of the free hero pool etc.... If I was you I would read up on things before i start running my mouth.

    Meh, no.

Then what seperates those of us who payed $30 for this game? No, although I do think that all the heroes should be purchasable for $30 total, that way you can pretty much get it all for the same price as people who bought the game. Game mode tokens and hipster swag can then be the only remaining differences between legacy players and freebies.

Also, no. HoN will not be screwed. HoN is a better game, DotA 2 can make every aspect of the game free and HoN will still be better. I think the whole "we believe restricting players access to heroes could be destructive to game design" thing is a just a stab at S2.
This game was, and is still worth every penny.

I personally don't like the tokens idea.
I thought S2 said something about changing/removing the tokens system because they didn't like it or something. Did they?
I also saw a thread a few days ago where someone was complaining about tokens, so I really don't know what the dealio is with all that.

I recommend that for all new accounts for the first time, the play now & public games buttons only run the tutorial when pressed.

LoL's model works because they were the first DotA-style game to be F2P. They had a full year advantage to realize that the model was superior in terms of making money.

The game is also infinitely easier for new players to get into, since it's so casual and basically holds your hand while you learn the basics.

The extra money they made in their first year of F2P allowed them to expand immensely and advertise like crazy.

LoL's model doesn't work because it's the best model, it works because they got tons of people to follow it (and become accustomed to it) in a very short time. If HoN had started as a F2P game, I have no doubt that it would be just as big as LoL is now.

Valve DOTA 2 statement: "All of the heroes will be available free of charge."

The title is self-explanatory. Valve have just announced with the opening of their Dota 2 store that all heroes will be freely available to everyone. The game is essentially entirely free to play. Here's the statement in their store FAQ: http://www.dota2.com/spoilsofwar/faq

This carries a lot of implications for HoN's business. Could we get anyone from the staff to throw out some sort of answer? (I figure unlikely, but worth a try)

I wasn't expecting this move, but it sure one-ups both LoL and HoN.

    Discuss away.

EDIT: Here's the blog post for the announcement: http://blog.dota2.com/2012/06/introd...he-dota-store/

Well yea if it works then both LoL and HoN will be counting their days soon.

Never thought of paying to access more heroes right. To make money, maybe, but when you have strong rivals as Valve, its just letting your guard down.

Explain to me if the game is f2p and all the heroes are f2p, how are they gonna make money from you?

As we know, a game isn't be made as a free-cookie to everyone.

Ask Valve and their TF2 Hats.

IMHO as a gold shield beta player & legacy account, give all players access to all heroes. Do it its a smart move; and to all you whiny legacy accs who cares you enjoyed a lot of stuff for 30$. If s2 really wants to give legacy accs something they can do like discounts on gold & silver alt avatars for legacy accs in the future other than that i think it's worth it to expand the player base by giving all new accs every hero. Lets grow the community more and enjoy less wait time + more expansions to the game . Don't sell heroes anymore, sell the avatars and think of other ways for revenue well that's my thoughts. Enjoy

They have their own market testing with TF2 that lets them know its ok and sustainable.

I curious what the F2P w/ a twist is if the heroes are all free.

I don't think there's a twist, you're just going to have to pay for avatars (which most likely everybody will buy... who doesn't love alt avatars).

Wait wtf - did anybody else see this?
You can CREATE your OWN alt avatar - unique to everybody else's.

    ^^this
So either they willl make no money, go bankrupt and fail or they will charge you up the ass for everything, so ya you get all the heroes but imagine the worst HoN alt avatar costing 6000 silver or 800 gold and better ones more so something has to be up

    ( who cares, HoN 4ever <3 ;D )

TF2 still lives and they still make lots of money from it, and basically, DotA 2 has the same model. So how could it not work? This is a smart move for everyone.
