    Solo Que Picking Phase

Im courious to know what top teir player look for in the picking phase when solo queing. I understand you want to get a good balance of stuns, slows, disables, dps damage, nukes and pushing ability, as well as having at least some support, carry, semicarry/ganker, initiater/tank, and pushing roles. But what are some pro tips on what to look for when picking, and making a decision on what to pick in that one minute (assuming its AP and you are lucky enough to have some teamates right clicking picks.)

And is it usually wise if none of your team right clicks to just pick a versitile semi carry?

Im happy to fill any role my team needs but i sometimes have trouble deciding what my team needs the most.

It depends on the bracket and how communicative (is that a word?) your team is. Once you join the game, start talking on your mic and see if people respond. Ask them to show picks. Try and pick around them if you can. Playing on EU servers, a lot of players don't use mics compared to NA/AUS players. If you can communicate with your team and they seem receptive, try and get them to pick a balanced team where you can all fit in whatever role you'd like to play.

However, in many games below 1600, players tend to quick pick, first pick, or last-second pick whatever the hell they want. If you've tried communicating with your team and they appear to be doing whatever they'd like with little regard for synergy, then you can't go wrong with a ranged character with a stun. A ranged stunner will fit any lineup (witch, pyro, glac, nymph). This doesn't mean you must pick support or play as support, but you're just balancing out your team's make up.

Unless your team specifically communicates around trying to pick up a jungler, it's generally best in solo queue to avoid junglers. Sure, you won't have to worry about laning with a random, but you will have to worry about whether or not 3 lanes will fail (including 2 solos).

If you are given the opportunity to go mid, then you have a lot more wiggle room since synergy is not as big of an issue (don't have to worry about double-melee or who needs farm more, etc), but this is not always a guarentee. Just note, however, that if you pick a ranged stunner with the intent of going mid and your team picks 4 melee, then you're likely going to have to give up mid to unf*** the lanes. Luckily, most ranged heroes can make this transition very well without taking too big of a hit even if you "already bought for mid".

    Thank you. Good advice.

I suggest reading the black code for how to pick.

I always watch what my team do in the first 15 seconds (auto pickers who have no intention of communicating)
Then with what ever they take and whoever is left try to figure out a strategy.

    WARNING
This approach means you end up playing glac/nymph/voodoo/ds in 80% of games and you hope those instant pick scout/magebane players aren't trash.

    ^Maybe we are all mad?

I usually end up picking Demented Shaman in such situations. Whatever the others do, I can adjust myself to the situation? Need me to go solo vs two - no problemo. Need me to babysit someone - sure, why not. You all failpicked and got no one to go mid? No problem, I can rape mid with DS aswell.

This applies to some other heroes who are just versatile enough to adjust to any situation. These include, as mentioned, mostly ranged heroes with stuns (pyro, witch) and possibly escapes (valk, silh). But also heroes without such skills are good - DS for example has neither escape nor a hard stun but he can still do very well alone if played properly.

Aluna is another such hero. She can carry, support, solo, roam, gank and all really effectively. Great mobility, utility, damage, autoattack, farming potential...
