Plague Rider w/ SotM, Spellshards, Refresher, FF plate
DR breaks the map once you hit level 6, probably one of my favourite midwars heros. Also you can respawn and pick off lots of people, the mobility is so sick on that small map.

First, stop asking pro players, they don't play midwars that much; ask 1200-1400s.

Ye, I tried glacius and the hero is pretty sick. Go for Shrunken+Blink+Spellshards+Sotm and pew pew easiness all around. 3 magic spells + spellshards making it so fun!

I find Monarch to be a strong pick-up. Ever team seems to revolve around some hasty initiation followed up by some heavy burst AoE stuns. However, with Monarch maxing his heal (a spell I hardly ever touch in a normal game unless the team match-up suggests I should) you can put off the burst damage and force the other team to "overstay their welcome", leading to a counter-initiation with all your heroes still intact. Also the AoE ground slow and his ult provide great position control factors in team fights.
The new hero Riftwalker is pretty sick, so is Thunderbringer and Aluna.
Best ability spammers: Thunderbringer, Voodoo Jester, Rhapsody, Master of Arms, Chipper, Artillery, Demented Shaman, Emerald Warden, Ellonia, Armadon
Best early-game initiators: Gauntlet, Devourer
My favourite hero for midwars is Pebbles cuz he can do a lot of tricks. For example you can pick an Invis rune and throw one of your foes to your teammates... Or just kill everyone as soon as you get PK and Ring of Sorcery.
Still haven't played many heroes so maybe i forgot someone.

Like so useful hero all game through and can carry as well!

Finally someone mentioned Pharaoh. He has great harass with tormented soul. When he gets his core items like staff and barbed armor its just sick
TB, Pyro, Aluna, FA, Flint etc
My personal favorites;
VJ (genjuro, wingbow x2, ghost marchers, staff of the master, charged hammer)
Plague (ghost marchers, wingbow, staff of the master, frostfield plate, restoration stone, spellshards)
Glacius (ghost marchers, frost field plate, pk, shrunken, restoration stone, genjuro or codex 5)
These builds worked for me to get 15 - 0 and/or Annihilation with the three heroes

I usually go Warbeast or Ophelia. The best two heroes for midwars no doubt
Pollywog, you can bd both last tower and shrine with ulti. If u have refresher and staff it's gg (you can also ad sols).
And jolt is good in lane
I like playing Fayde.
