Hey there, just posting to see if anyone could help me start off with this game. I'm mainly wondering what hero(es) I should start off with and maybe some basic builds, nothing hugely difficult, I just need a starting point. Also, should I go right into MM or not? I've played this a bit but I felt completely lost even though I'm 1700 elo in LoL (If it even makes a difference.) So yeah, if you could help me, that'd be great. If not, thanks for atleast deciding to look.

Plague rider and magmus are good choice if youre gonna support. If you wanna mid lol copied chipper, but I cant remember the champions name now. Other good choices for starting mid player are torturer, pyro and pollywog. Only carry I would suggest to beginner is valk which is abit like ashe. I have played abit lol and I think its harder to go from lol to hon than hon to lol. I never got to lvl 30, but my 1700-1800 elo friends told that I could easily play there.
I've always considered witch slayer and plague rider to be two very good starting heroes.
Ok the basic tips are:
1.Learn to last hit
2.Learn the heroes
3.Do not help your team mate if ur not close and it's 1vs3 or 2 vs 5.
4.Don't overextend or tower dive at all times unless ur certain
5.Don't walk back for regen, use the courier for a health potion
Go to practice mode and check out a few heroes first, like witch slayer, plague rider, swift blade, slither (though this hero isn't the easiest one). Those are pretty easy to play, but they can be a bit fragile, so some good tanky strenght heroes are: armadon, predator (carry though so you need to know how to farm), moraxus and lord salforis. Now not all of those str heroes are as easy to play as like plague rider (which is really really good hero even if you don't have any farm, just make sure you know how the ultimate works).
Play no-stats first with a few heroes and then you might want to from time to time try to play a stats game, the difference is not that huge but mostly you don't have leavers there and the "troll" builds are less frequent. DO NOT touch match making first, you want to know the basics before jumping into that world because THERE you WILL find huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge flaming if you fail.
Check out in game guides, and I don't mean just the first guide which is shown in the game. In the top of the shop screen you can see other guides also, read the text and check out what kind of items that hero needs.

Oh and I don't know much about "Epoch" which is a place for new players to find mentors and lots of help! I can't help you more on that, but I think googling should do the trick.

go play mm, no reason not to. just drop quick to ~1200-1400, w/e and get coins while you're learning to play

Play public games only, avoid MM until you understand the basics and are familiar with most heroes. Try to play every hero at least once. Some good starter heroes are (imo only)
Avoid jungle heroes as it prevents you from learning laning basics. Let more experienced players go mid for now.
Most importantly, ignore the flamers and try to have fun
Also don't argue about going mid and act pro cause you've done it in LoL. I'm done with former LoL players who think they know what they are doing. No offence but it happens often.
Even with a versatile carry like valkyrie, I really do not agree with starting with her as your first carry. Valkyrie requires a bit of skill to play and timing to be effective. You might want to recommend something that is a little more forgiving like arachna.
If you can lasthit and have some other basic Moba skills like warding and ganking, you should be fine playing matchmaking.

Be very careful with these two heroes. Their skills are indeed very nice, but do note that they're very squishy heroes, so be conservative when it comes to positioning them in fights/while in lane. Something that helps is to never run around alone as these heroes. Even if you tower hug as one of them, they're prime targets for gankers.Some good starter heroes are (imo only)...

Imo arachna is just way too squishy and no escape mechanism. I wouldnt actually even start with carry but cause hes not completely new to mobas he could try it out.
E: Tanks are good for beginner forgot to mention in first post. Try armadon or kraken.

^^ This. Playing as many heroes as possible is definetly the best way of learning. In fact I think learning to play just 1 or 2 heroes "good" is counterproductive. Because you will eventually start to think that you actually are a good player just because you learned how to land 3-4 skills but in reality have zero knowledge of the game or the opponents heroes.Play public games only, avoid MM until you understand the basics and are familiar with most heroes. Also dont believe everything people will tell you ingame, you'll get far more bad advice then good I'm afraid. Above all have fun.
Valk is a good choice since she is SORT OF similar to Ashe. If you are a good LoL player, then you can do fairly well in HoN assuming that you keep a very open mind to the differences.
For instance, Valk is a lot more difficult in the early stages of the game than Ashe because of creep denying. Valk and Ashe both have low base damage starting out, but an Ashe doesn't have to worry about the enemy players killing their creeps before she can. You will have to be far more skillful with you last hitting than you may be used to.
Another issue that I see running rampant in LoL players is auto-attacking creeps (any attacks on creeps other than the last hit). I have had players in LoL quit the match because I "was taking all the gold" because they were auto-attacking the creeps and I'd just time the last hit for the gold.
That being said, I could possibly suggest a few more heroes depending on what role you used to play in LoL. Parasite is a great jungler who has a gank pattern similar to LoL jungler gankers. If you play a lot of LoL junglers, you may find him fairly simple.
Lastly, even though these are different games and have different mechanics, your GOOD habits from LoL should DEFINITELY come with you. For example, warding. Mass-warding in LoL is crazy popular, even in lower tier games. It's not uncommon for everyone on the team to grab a ward and place them all over the map (often in bad spots, but even bad vision is still vision). In HoN, most players prefer to bastardize one player into buying all of the wards and often times they don't do it (in lower brackets).
Random pieces of advice:
- Learn what every hero does before going to MatchMaking
- Ask questions if you have them
- Learn how to deny to the point where it's second nature
- Killing Ancients and jungle camps is NOT a team activity in HoN. That will get you raged at in HoN. (Compared to "Leashing" in LoL)
- Remember there are two rune-spots with a few different runes. Remember to watch out for them and who is getting them.
- Mana is far less abundant in HoN. Use your skills smartly.

I added honcast because you can learn so much from watching other people.
You should aim at learning all the heroes, so just take them one at a time as you want to. The guides in game are for the most part pretty good. You probably want to look at several of them for each hero (start a practice game so you have the time to read). Remember that itembuilds are always situational and following a build is just the first step, the next step is knowing yourself what item to get for the specific situation you're in. So always try to think of why you're doing what you're doing.
I'd say just jump right into the MM. It's the only way to earn coins and as a new player you want to be able to buy new heroes sooner or later. Expect your mmr to drop though, but it will eventually rise again, and that's when you know that you've earned the mmr you're at.
