Introducing HoNmods.com - A website for hosting HoN mods and addons

I've put together a community website for hosting HoN mods & addons. It's still very WIP so I'd appreciate any feedback / criticisms / suggestions that you guys can give me!

It has support for .s2z mods, and .honmod mods. .honmod's are preferred, because the site will automatically read the mod.xml for mod details etc.

Right now it doesn't have too many mods so it looks a bit bare; but I'm hoping that mod dev's will start using it so that it becomes a central place for HoN players to find mods. It's completely ad free, and should stay that way unless the traffic gets way way higher than I'm expecting.

Current things in my todo list (should be completed soon):
    • Mod packs - Allow mod dev's to create a package that contains a bunch of mods; e.g take all of xHomicide's mods and package them up into a single download.
    • JSON API - Not sure what sort of access you guys will need? I'm thinking the only thing that will be usefull is JSON access for listing the mods; for use in modman etc.
    • Map support - This obviously won't be out soon, but I am planning on supporting maps once (if?) they're ever supported by HoN.
    • Top 5 lists - Listing the top 5 mods by views / downloads / rating etc.
    • Code repository - Would be an extremely nice thing to have, although I am uncertain about the demand / time investment that it'll need to implement.
    • ??? - I'm very open to other suggestions (bar things like ZOMG MAKE THE SITE PINK WITH FLOWERS!!! ;p)

So feel free to poke around the site (www.honmods.com), and if you're a developer please upload your mods! I'd especially love some feedback from mod developers, I want to make the site as easy and feature packed as I can for you all.

If you need to get in contact with me, you can either PM me here, catch me on irc (#honlabs on the HoN irc server), or email me on itchey [at] honmods.com

A JSON API would be nice. Don't put much effort on it though, just a simple list of mods for start should be enough. In time, when MM starts using it, you could improve it.

Yea, that's exactly what I've been thinking. Get it working with just a listing (giving basically the same attributes as mod.xml); and extend it if there is demand for new functionality.

Thanks Hopefully with the support from mod developers we can get it going properly!

Something I forgot to mention is that download url's are static, so changing your updateurl in mod.xml to the download link on HoNmods.com will work without issue

Make it searchable, also, allow mods to be tagged with keywords

    Shameless bump.

Any mod developers interested in adding their mods to the site?

I must say it's a good idea, but... What's wrong with the forum?

You really need more attention. I personally think that it is easier to find mods there than on the HoN forums.

And itchey, you could ask the mod developers themselves if you can upload their mod to the website. Just remember to give them credit.

Actually it's not, the problem is that if there isn't a central repository, there's not much we can do. Most developers have quit HoN or their mods.

Well, it is a personal preference, or is it not?

Totally. We've been through this on mIRC so many times. It's just not possible to do this without an intervention from S2 itself and a moderator that wants to help in the moving into a repo. Since all projects died (including the official repo, which shows that there is no interest on that), I don't think this will ever happen.

Well, I'm still here lurking in the dark . Except that I don't rage-post that much and swallow my anger regarding the reoccurring idjit threads.

95% of my buddies play Dota 2 now and though I prefer HoN I caved due to peer pressure. I doubt that I can convince some of them to pick it up again.
Most of them are bad (some are even really bad, 3 are good and they never played HoN) and while I can juggle two smiliar games they hardly understand one of them.
The baddies follow the good ones and I can't force the good ones to learn another game, sadly.

Still interested in HoN mods but I won't put any more work into the repository. Didn't pay off for me anyway .

It's complicated. We wanted to do a good job over here, but we couldn't back at time, and now there isn't anyone else to do it (with the will), except with one or two (like itchey). And with this "ban", even I that prefer HoN over Dota2 or LoL don't want to play the game just because of the company's action.

Sorry to poke my nose into this, but what "Ban" exactly?

Like I said before it's a good idea but I like the forums so I dont' see why, but let's say in theory people would use this instead, it would be great due it would be alot easier to find and update broken mods, the thing is just mods are DEAD. This game is DEAD. There is only few poeple left playing this game, yes it's stll increaseing but if you look at the players you'll see the most suck and are bad players, then the second tier which would be decent players, they quit because there will always be some ***** who bought the EA hero or they just play a hero that is generally overpowered. And then we have good players which mostly often play as a whole team and they're good enough to handle a overpowered hero or they play lockpick and ban most of them. And then ofc there is the pro's which play Tornament rules and don't have any overpowered heroes due to the mode.

So the new people who suck prbbly want mods but they can't make them so nobody is makin them.
    Decent players quit.
Good players don't use mods if they wanna get better
and Pro players aren't allowed to use mods.

So there is nobody that is willing to make or update mods, basically.

In general yes, there are some exceptions, but in general the mod section is dead. I said this in 2011, that would eventually die. Now it's too late to recover it =\
