So after all the games I've played there are a few questions I have:
After answering any questions (to whoever posts), please, if you have anything else to add that would help me out...please do not hesitate to post it.
1.) How aggressive should I play in lane? I notice that some players are so damn aggressive and I'm just not used to that (coming from LoL).
2.) On the topic of being aggressive, how do you counter someone being aggressive?
3.) How does Fog of War work? I know there are no "bushes" to hide in but are there places to hide so that you can effectively gank?
4.) Please use a screenshot. Where are common places to get gank (and vice versa - be ganked from).
5.) When should I be buying my items for my build? ASAP or should I wait to have enough to buy all items in a set or the whole item?
6.) If I'm a carry, should I be buying wards? (Stupid question?)
7.) If I'm a carry (but not necessarily an initiator), when should I join a team fight?
8.) Why does it seem that every hero except the one I'm playing is OP :P
9.) Any general tips you can add go here:
Thanks!
too many questions, go watch some high level players play the game and observe.
That all depends on the lane and the heroes in the lane. Legion side top should be playing semi aggressive, meaning play aggressive but don't dive to tower early on. Bottom should be played somewhat passively and more focused on killing creeps, while mid is a mix of both. Again this is just a generalization because there are so many factors that depend on it. If you want to win top lane, typically send a double stun top like![]()
. as for mid, you want someone that is a great ganker or someone who needs the levels like
. As for bottom, send a strong support in with a carry hero to farm the lane up,
![]()
. You want to play aggressive when you see your opponent in a vulnerable position in any lane.
2.) On the topic of being aggressive, how do you counter someone being aggressive?
Some say that you need to be playing SUPER passively and literally tower hugging, but this brings problems. The problem being is that now he has the advantage in lane, he is taking all the creep kills and denying your epm/gpm. My opinion there is only one way, and that is being aggressive back. Whoever is the most aggressive in the lane usually ends up winning it. Just make sure you are not playing overly aggressive, doing so will result in you getting killed. This is where knowing the game comes into play. Next time you are up against your enemies, check their inventory. Does he only have 3 tango's? If so, then you can go ahead and play aggressive, his lack of regen will only hurt him in lane. Did he buy a hatchet? If so he is probably going to try to get into melee with the creeps as often as possible, when he comes up throw some auto attacks or a spell on him to stop him from farming.
3.) How does Fog of War work? I know there are no "bushes" to hide in but are there places to hide so that you can effectively gank?
Of course there are! One major thing you should know about fog of war is that during the daytime, you can tell this by looking at the top middle of your screen, your vision is increased. While in the nighttime it is decreased. Its a minor effect, but if you are juking through the forest it can literally save your life. It can also help you snag a gank during the nighttime because of the lack of vision your opponent has. Since you are coming from LoL, I assume not many people buy or use wards? In HoN wards of sight are the single best investment for your team, simply because it grants you vision where normally there would be fog of war. Allows you to see incoming ganks and to also set up a possible gank.
4.) Please use a screenshot. Where are common places to get gank (and vice versa - be ganked from).
You can get ganked from anywhere on the map, there are not really any common spots and vice versa.
5.) When should I be buying my items for my build? ASAP or should I wait to have enough to buy all items in a set or the whole item?
It depends, you should always have a spot free for a tp scroll. Until it gets to end-game then you can upgrade your boots and not have to worry about having on you 24/7. If you have a tp scroll on you, then grab items ASAP. If not, then still grab them ASAP but save a spot for that tp in case you need to buy one from the side shop.
6.) If I'm a carry, should I be buying wards? (Stupid question?)
Generally no. But in low public games, don't expect anyone to buy wards. As I said earlier, wards are the best investment. Are you getting ganked alot? Do you plan on farming a lane for more than 5 mins? If so it wont hurt to grab a ward or two even if you are playing a carry hero, you can make up for the price of one ward with two creep kills and grants you vision for 6 mins.
7.) If I'm a carry (but not necessarily an initiator), when should I join a team fight?
Depends, do you have Shrunken Head? If not then stay back and let your team initiate them instead and you come in to "clean up". Most carry hero's will eventually need to get a Shrunken Head, even when you do get it that doesn't mean you need to initiate. Stay a safe distance and go in when the time is right, this also depends on which hero you are playing as well.
8.) Why does it seem that every hero except the one I'm playing is OP :P
That is only because you do not know how to play the game and are more than likely playing people who know the basics of the game and have done a little research. HoN is a pretty balanced game, with a few exceptions.
9.) Any general tips you can add go here:
One thing I think new players lack is map awareness. You need to be able to know whats going on all over the map, not just your lane. Yes people call mia from there lane, but how often has it happened that you get ganked with no mia call? It happens alot, and it can be prevented by simply watching the mini map and in some downtime checking that side of the map.
Another tip I can say is the items you purchase. While the recommended items are decent, they are not always the right choice. Are you going up against 3 or more heroes that use a lot of magic? Then buy yourself a vestment, cost 400g and will give you some magic armor. Are you going up against Jeraziah :jera:? If you are playing someone like![]()
or
you may want to grab a Harkon's Blade for :jera: ulti (His ult gives something like 10000 armor and some hp regen so with harkon's making your auto attacks magic, it goes right through it).
Last tip is the hero selection screen. It is a team game, you are not playing solo. So instead of playing what you WANT to play, talk to your team and play something that synergizes together well in lane and in team fights. The outcome of the game can literally be decided before the game gets going.
Thanks!
No problem, hope some of this helps. It all comes down to experience though. You wont become better overnight, so don't get frustrated. It will take some time!
1.) You want to be as agressive as possible but not to the point where you overextend and get killed. If you have a lane with 2 stunners you can go for kills instead of playing passively. Playing passively is almost never recommended, people will simply deny all your gold and xp that way. Knowing every hero also helps in this though, so don't stress for now and deal with the ones you know.
2.) Bite them back. Preferably avoiding creep aggro. You can be more agressive when in the short lane (legion bot or hellbourne top) since your enemies won't be usually near their tower to run back. Another difference from LoL is that towers do not protect you very much unless very early into the game, and you should rely less on them and invest more into finding paths trough trees to escape (this comes with practice as well, but you will learn that there are countless paths you can walk between trees, and escape routes you can make by cutting certain trees down).
3.) Fog of war is mostly composed of trees and alike. Your visionr radius is smaller during night so always keep this in mind when approaching the river or the enemy towers (due to teleport stones, people can be highly mobile in this game and show up unexpectedly in other lanes). As long as you're under a tree your opponent isn't he should not have sight on you unless he has some sort of clearvision (more on this later). Also, burning trees down will obviously make you visible and can be done easily by some heros like Ra.
4.) Due to the nature and size of the map, you can be ganked from almost anywhere really, especially if you're in the long lane (legion top or hellbourne bot) which makes it really easy for either the mid or jungler heros to sneak up behind you.
5.) Buy them as soon as you can leaving any recipies as the last component. You won't lose gold if you don't have any when you die afteral.
6.) No but in pubgames you should buy them anyway. Knowing effective ward spots is another thing though, and there are dozens of them.
7.) You usually let the beefy heros initiate. If you're ranged it's easier to stay back and shoot, backing off when you feel threatned. If you are melee it's much more complicated as you need to know who can stun you and whatnot.
8.) Because you don't know the game yet and one of the main things that make you win your lanes is being able to 'intimidate' your opponent, making them play passively and thus reducing their xp/farm. Skill difference between players makes for a very heavy snowball effect here, and it only takes a couple deaths, gold loss and time wasted returning to lane for you to fall behind your opponents very quickly.
9.) Try playing support heros. SOme are really easy and most supports are quite able to kill and burst people down quickly and snowball contrary to most people's beliefs especially at your bracket.
Thank you so much to both of you! You've helped me out a lot! I've also been watching some HoNCast games as well. I thought of 2 more questions:
1.) When heroes are MIA/SS from their lanes/mid, where should I be in MY lane? Should I still push and farm like nothing's changed, or should I hang back more near my turret a bit? That of course means that the enemy is pushing and denying and getting more gold. So I feel it's a tradeoff, but which is the best idea?
2.) On map awareness, is there a mod that replaces color dots on the map with hero portrait dots?
1) It depend on the situation. If the missing one is a pebbleswith good farm and good level gap, mostly you ought to stay waaaay back and wait it out. Although if you know that you have sight to spot if he comes to gank, you might be more aggressive, though just be ready to go back ASAP if needed. And then you have to know does he have a rune or not? If he just got invis your precious sight gives you no help.
What kind of hero are you? Are you magebane with a blink or slow andromeda with few hitpoints? Is the missing hero a good ganker, i.e lots of burst or good disables? Do you have sight? What is your: lineup, hp situation and disables? What kind of heroes are you against (stuns or no, passive or aggressive)?
It all comes to just using common sense, mostly it's better to be safe than sorry.
2) You should ask this from the mod section, but I do doubt it.
answer on your all questions is simple ! Go check HoN cast pro player 1850 - 2000 mmr and try to learn something useless from him![]()

The above posters have already answered most questions well, here's a couple I think needed more explanation:
After the laning phase, the entire map is a valid gank spot. In the early game however, these are common gank spots to watch out for:
These are all well known ambush locations, but really, the entire map is a gank spot once you know how to use cover of trees and sneak up on people. NEVER LET YOUR GUARD DOWN.
In my opinion, join the fights when you are able to actually make a difference in them. If you are a level 3 Sand Wraith with no items yet, then just stay out of the way and farm. When you are able to actually contribute damage and/or influence the fight in your team's favor, get over there and jump in. Exactly when to jump in will vary depending on your hero; sometimes better to wait and go in last to clean up (Sand Wraith, Magebane, The Dark Lady, Chronos, most hard carries) while with other heroes you should dive in headfirst (Armadon, Maliken, Predator).7.) If I'm a carry (but not necessarily an initiator), when should I join a team fight?
Also, don't forget that when playing with any ranged carry you should be joining the fight, but from a safe distance; stay around the edges of the fight, dropping all your nukes and autoattacking their important targets (kill that Monarch right now, worry about Legionnaire afterwards, etc.) This also depends on how well your farm is going and what kind of items you have acquired.

Thank you!
One last question that I've thought of:
1.) When is the laning phase over in Hon?
The laning phase is over when people stop going back to their respective lanes that they started in. In lower-leveled games, this is easily identifiable by the 5-man, 10 minute standoff that takes place at mid. In higher games, this is generally the part where pushing/counter-pushing and team fights start occurring.

It is over when teams actively begin looking for teamfights and/or tower pushes, which is generally around when everyone is hitting 6.
