Everyone says he's a carry, but when I play him I always get some early kills and start off with something like a 6/1, but then keep dying mid-game. Always.
It's about his 1v1 concept. Conduit and overload are EXTREMELY powerful vs isolated targets. But in teamfights cd just gets focused and melts. Just now I was in a match vs predator where he killed me in about 4 hits. I got maybe 2 overload shots off...
Oh by the way, why do people say geometers is good on him? The impression I've had is that it one of the worst items for him. CD has good sustained dps but lacks chasing and survivability. Frostburn gives more chasing and survivability than geometers, while geometers gives more sustained dps. Why geos? The enemy will just run away from you.

frostburn splits into geo + frostwulf and that is a safe build for most carries in general, not to mention the fact that using geo dispells debuffs (pred leaps you, geobane and you can run freely.. etc)
i like corrupted with steamboots/ghostmarchers, hotbl, shieldbreaker and also shrunken head/nullstone if needed
Edit: you have to try to never be in the middle of the team fight as ranged carry

you DO have a team, don't you? then how are they going to run away if you have atleast one slow?
just snowball hard through conduit early game, get shrunken + frostburn(yuck i hate this item so much) into geo x frostwolf. or if you are confident you go shrunken + shieldbreaker and then geo.
geo gives a ton of survivability and it lets you chase with your already superior movespeed.
Alright I'm following you guys.
Another question. Most people get hotbl on cd (and I saw tdm getting it on him), but this confuses me since cd usually goes mid in pubs.
Mid heroes usually go bottle for the rune control. Bottle keeps his hp up when harassing and roaming, so doesn't that make the hp regeneration from hotbl kinda unnecessary? Buying both bottle and hotbl makes you get too much hp regeneration really, so is it still money-efficient?
If not, which one do you skip, bottle or hotbl?
Get either hotbl or shaman's depending on what you need. The health regen isn't really what you get either of them for, they just help you survive.
I wouldn't advise skipping bottle, either.
I'll never forget what I felt that day...
I, want to be a Hero of Justice!
Go ghost marchers helm mystic very early.
Try getting a shruken after that.
Geobane after and then its up to you.
If you can get these items quickly the game is prettty done.
If you're also outleveling the enemy team nicely, he WILL get out of control if you play good and you WILL WIN. because cd can win games pretty much by himself.
yes CD is an early game carry
he does not have any abilities which scale so he is not a true carry like madman or dark lady or, his conduit and negative armor ult allow him to carry through the early game.
More tanky items such as helm, shrunken and frostwolf allow him to maintain conduit during the later fazes of the game and remain relevant
also if a preds on you try using conduit then juking and attacking back when you've stolen his damage
In this world gone mad, we won't spank the EM players, the EM players will spank us.
-> armor scales
I hardly get hotbl on him. Id get frostburn then some survivability offensive items.
The reason why you die is probably because of bad positioning.
As a range carry you are probably squishy. You have to keep moving around the team fight and keep dealing dps no matter if your hitting the tank. But if you are hitting their meat shield, you are probably in the wrong spot. Try to go through the sides of the team fight and then pick off the supports.
If you're getting focused, back off and reposition yourself. CD is great at that because he has high mobility. Geo's isn't just for the damage. It gives you survivability, dps, a way to confuse your enemies, and a pushing tool for towers.
CD is a tanky ranged carry. You buy health, armor, etc. In big fights use your W on someone who isn't going to be able to escape before you get maxed on charges.
You don't need damage, you don't need a slow. You skills provide all of the damage you need.
A suggested build: BoT, Vanguard (or linkens), AC, Heart, Skadi, Manta
CD get'S alot of dmg from conduit that's why he is so strong early game, lategame u wan'T to use conduit on a hero which doesn'T have shrunken/nullstone and whom u can easily drain for max charges( tanky heroes or carrys who have yet to finish one of the above stated items are generally the best to target)
As for items i usually go for:
Laningshould be picked up in lane at least)
:EnhancedMarchers::HelmOfTheBlackLegio:Bottle::Mys ticVestmentsinto :ShamansHeaddressr replace with :ShrunkenHead:against many stuns)
that's how u can look lategame, riftshards make sure u scale lategame, shrunken and demonic for survivability and dmg, shieldbreaker and demonic to go along with ur ulti -armor , savage is nice but i suggest replacing it with wingbow if none of the enemy team si going for savage mace( if u secretly finish wingbow before they start working on savage u have a huge advantage on their carry)
you build tanky items on him so that you can stay close enough for conduit to work for at least 6 second...
Hotbl being nerfed doesn't make it a bad item at all. However i generally think going shrunken first is better. I also like going from there strait into a icebrand.
Also, if you are doing very well, poste haste is by far the best boot on him. with post haste, frostburn and his move speed buff, he is basicly perma hasted with 510 move speed. It is ridiculous.
best build imho is poste haste/shrunken head/geos/frostwolf/savage mace/demonic. changes of course can be made.
