:Codex: +. Tell me why it's not good. It gives a decent damage boost, pretty good int (which damp needs in lane), and a nice nuke that adds to his early game nuke combo. I don't mean for it to be upgraded all the way - by the time you actually have enough to upgrade it that high, you could probably afford a good portion of your more carry-like items.

He already can burst a ton early without aid and the Int doesn't make up for the extra mana cost for something he doesn't need that early in the game. Build a Ring of Sorcery for that early Int/Mana instead.
Damp only has burst if he managed to farm his R. What if he recently died? He would have to wait another ~1:30 to start dealing damage again.
Also, couldn't it be used to finish off slightly more tanky champions?
Nah. Chalice is good enough.
If you are going to get Codex 1, do it right and get Codex 5.
But with his skill set hes got already high burst damage.
Does more immediate damage than the bonus spellshards provides, so sure, you can get it. Better than rushing frostburn.
I'll never forget what I felt that day...
I, want to be a Hero of Justice!
Your burst damage with Dampeer will start to give way to more sustained damage as the game goes on. Rather than dumping money into a codex, you should just start building your carry items instead. A chalice of blood provides most of the mana you will need, and if you are building a nullstone on him like a lot of Damp players recommend, you will already have really good regen.

I'd say it's a decent item to get if you can get it really early. Then you can just gank your way to victory. If you can't buy it early enough, I would go for something else. The amazing thing about a codex dampeer would be your ability to near instantly kill anyone. As soon as the enemies get tanky enough or start grouping up so you can't do that, the codex is not nearly as useful anymore.
Codex is only strong in the early game and okay during mid game.
Getting it will grant you no survivability and it's mana costs are higher than your mana pool is increased by it's INT bonus, however Dampeer tends to have a lack of both in the early stages.
There are definetly worse items than Codex on Dampeer, however it does make you an easy target and takes away from your carry potential since you used 3000 gold on an item entirely worthless for the late game stage.
All the rebuttals in this thread, can't you say the same about fayde? Why should she get codex?
Waste 7 k gold on codex? You can get every item in the game for this money!
I feel like its a strong point when chosing your items. Going for a hotbl and a ros early on provides more survivability aswell as potential in teamfights and ganking. An early codex will burn your mana way to quickly, so you might kill one person for sure, but then you have to regen way longer and give the other team the opportunity to farm up, while you are useless for some time. Dampeer hasnt that much rune-control to get all the runes all the time, so you might not always have a regen up your sleves.
And about Fayde and codex: Fayde does have one thing that dampeer hasnt: The 100%-Chance to hit her combo. Dampeer can be kited during the flight, while fayde pops out of invis and has her spells+codex casted in <2 secs.
Fayde is all about the 1-shot kill which she does a lot more efficient than Dampeer.
Her carry potential is limited as she doesn't have a single scaling ability as opposed to Dampeer who has the best non-percentage-based life steal in the game.
Fayde can sneak up on someone, stun and escape with some help of her 3rd skill.
When you jump in with Dampeer to 1-shot someone with everything and codex. you're forced into any upcoming fight without having a single cooldown left which means you're mostly dead. Rather get some items that enable you to make use of your life steal and become able to rip through groups of people instead of being a glass cannon who can take down only one enemy for sure before becoming food.
Codex Level 5 is with 7000 gold the most expencive item in the game.
You can choose ANY other item instead.
Even Frostwolf is only 6200.

Stop entropy - watch good anime
Dampeer's burst is already insanely high with his essences, which don't take that long to re-acquire after death. He can basically combo down almost any hero, codex is a waste of money, he has more than enough burst. When a hero has a good strength in a certain area, it's best to build where their weaknesses are. What I mean by this, is to get a :ShrunkenHead:. He is squishy and can easily be handled with some CC if he is without one. :ShrunkenHead: enables you to combo anyone down without being interrupted, as well as survive much longer. Codex is building on a strength he already has a lot of, I would suggest building survivability and carry items so he can have even more to offer than just a combo on one hero.
My usual build in this order:
:EnhancedMarchers:
:ShrunkenHead:
Then items depending on the situation.
