My main problem is not the confusion all those new alts provide, but the fact that they are far too different from the originals, do not fit in heroes theme anymore and could even be completly new different heroes. but i also believe a lot of new players will have problems with alts and heroes of the same theme(fire, horsemen, dwarfs etc)
here is a good thread with few valid points

Its more confusing for me if I got PR as a mate in one game, the game after the enemy picks PR.
During fights I´m like:
Hell, yeah. Our PR will pwn them!
After a few seconds:

Pay attention at the picking screen. Problem solved.
I ♥ supporting.
Its like you guys are just ignoring some of the points that were made in this thread.
If you fight 5 horseman what does it help if you watch the picking screen?
Btw: One Alt Avatar I HATE to play against is the plague Alt Avatar. I just cant get used to that ulti and cant recognize it that fast.
imo, the maliken avatar looks just like salforis avatar :S
Its no problem for me as i have a good memory, but i guess it could potentially be a little game breaking for new players.
You could easily mod out the skins you find confusing and replace them with the original alt (this way, no matter what skin anyone chooses, you will still see the one you are most comfortable with). I don't know why no one posted this yet, but it seemed like a very easy solution to this problem.
You don't know what the giant burning tree is? There's really only two options, and KotF wouldn't have such an "evil" looking avatar.
This is infinitely more confusing than any other hero comparison including the new horsies.
Maliken could be a little tricky til you see his glowing blue or green sword.
I don't always notice what the enemy team picks and don't pay attention except to my lane and misses etc. Suddenly a wild tremble/parasite appears.
I think this might be a graphical problem, too. I have EVERYthing maxed NOW, and the horsemen look completely different to me (okay haven't seen Mali and Salf together yet I'll be honest). I remember playing on lowest settings for awhile with a less nice computer and the blandness makes things hard to tell apart sometimes, especially with the newer shinier alts that rely on shiny effects around the model to look different/cool (which they do). Some of the older models (like Corrupted, thank god he has a badass, thankfully underused alt) also look like they blend into the grass, once again especially on lowest settings.
I personally have never had a problem with telling alts apart as a veteran player. Pay more attention at the picking screen and the 1 free minute they give you to size the opponent up at the start. One thing though is some heroes cluster**** the screen completely, once fought Draconis and Gravekeeper and Plague on the same team, no idea what happened every fight we all just died. Pretty sure everybody else was confused too.

Although I haven't played against the five horsemen yet, I have to agree that Parasite and Tremble is a complete mind****. Too many times where the tremble alt is rarely chosen that I think it is Parasite only to get stiffed by a Tremble mid.
Other alts - no problem at all. However for newbies? Yes, there will be problems. I completely agree with seeing Phoenix and wondering what the hell is that?

I'm sure this is mainly true. I never had much of a problem , just a couple avatars that are pretty similar like the soul stealer and defiler ones. But these horsemen are cutting it close. The maliken alt isn't easy to tell apart from rampage standard skin and his dumb grey colored alt.
