the difference is that its A fair which is required in a competitive enviroment, and B theres no advantage to older players where new players have to grind their way up to even be put on the same level
look at any competitive fighting game
Everyone has access to every character
Both players can choose the same character meaning if one character is vastly overpowered its not an issue because both players can pick them
no grind beyond simply learning how to play the game/character
Grinding is purely there to slow down progression, its there for a reason because hey wtf is the point spending $60 on a game that lasts 5 minutes but when in this case you know how to play pokemon and want to play with others, which is more fun, fighting when you want or "hang on gimme a week to grind out my EV/levels".
I never took Pokemon to be a competitive game with how cute and fuzzy they make the starters .
Even from a competitive standpoint, there are some Pokemon vastly superior to others (Tiers supports this,ie. Uber). You can have access to all Pokemon, but competitively they are seperated by tiers and are not on the same level (poor ethic in a fighting game). Look at the NU list, its a joke. Then look at all the OP attacks abilites, ex: Stealth Rock, Guts, Drizzle, Swift Swim, Sand Stream, Sand Rush, Speed Boost. Lastly, an indepently made program hardly justifies that the actual game is meant for competition. Seriously, its Pokemon. You have to grind levels anyway to beat each game in the series, so don't get angry that it delays the short-sided competitive aspect.
I play it both casually and competitively, and keep both sides separate. I play pokemon games several times over, and that's when I go through grind. When I simply want to have a fun battle, without having to waste hours breeding for perfects IV's and nature, and then training the pokemon monotonously, then I'll use pokemon online. Besides, yes, certain tactics are over powered, namely STEALTH ROCKS, but besting your opponents with worse pokemon is always a joy.
Why should I have to sit through the torture of grinding a Parasect up to level 100 after 10~ hours of breeding for perfection, just so I can use it 2-3 times? What's the point of innovation if you have to completely scrap a pokemon, if your strategy didn't work out, in game? I feel PO brings out the best in me, competitively, as I enjoy finding obtuse strategies, and using them to beat opponents. This is why I play NU in UU/OU; because it's challenging, and it feels ABSOLUTELY GLORIOUS when you beat generic sand team #3132 with Omastar, Parasect, Ninjask, Clamperl, Cryogonal, and Charizard. You don't get that kind of satisfaction in regular pokemon, as it would take you an eternity to tweak your team to perfection, and by then, new strategies will have been developed, and it's back to the drawing board.

Its not just the terrible pokemon design, the story was horrible, the rivals were aggravating, and the enemy team was forgettable. B/W failed in most aspects.
They added a bit to competitive play, but I don't think it was enough for me to sit through that bubblegum storyline.
I found the design to be akin to that of Gen I's, and it did do a lot of similar design choices. While I want to just leave it at >opinions, I think B/W did fine with designs (minus **** like the Tepig line, the Woobat line, and the Ducklett line), I absolutely ****ing hated them for what they did to the pokemon. Evolving, for the first time, at level 45+ is unacceptable, especially when the evolution is as shitty as Braviary, Zweilous, or Deino.
Besides, at least it HAD story, unlike Gen I/II. I didn't even think the story was that bad, it's just that it wasn't fleshed out enough for it's intended effects (they really should've delved deeper into Ghetsis' and N's backgrounds). The rivals being aggrevating is also a good thing. I never once felt threatened/upset by Gary or red-haired-fagoloid, but Barry has literally made me rage quit pokemon for weeks, and Bianca got me upset by what ended up happening to her. I never once regarded Gary as anything but a lack luster nuisance, and he is, too. People just need to take off their rose-tinted glasses. Besides, PLASMAAAAAAA being forgettable is bull ****. They were more memorable than Team Rocket, who really didn't do **** besides create Mewtwo and try to pull of some petty thefts. Ghetsis himself was more memorable than most video game villains, because he went above and beyond what you'd expect a villain to do. He turned his own son into a shut in, and used him as a scapegoat for his evil plans. He never intended to share any of his glory with N, and he bullies his own son around. If that weren't bad enough, he didn't give a **** about pokemon, or his followers (much like Cyrus, who is another great villain), and he didn't give two shits about the death toll. All Giovanni had going for him is that he was one suave mother ****er, but he was easily the worst villain of the series.
But then again, >opinions.

i liked gary, he even had an optional battle and changed his eevee depending on how the fight went, he surpassed the elite four and became champ for about 5 seconds..
i'd learn to love the evil teams if they didnt just use the same 2 pokemon on every damn grunt ever, i'd understand if it was like "ok your one of us here's your evil partner" but half the time its a freakin rat, like seriously they should all have Houndoors or some dark/ghost pokemon i mean even Jessie/James were Grunts and have their own unique pokemon.
my fav rival was Silver from Gen2, he actually had character development, goes from this no good pokemon thief where his theft isnt even implied, he actually takes the starter, goes on to steal a Sneasel from another trainer aswell, gladly takes on the challenge to kick team rocket's ass along with the player because he considers them weak and then gets his ass handed to him by Lance and ofc the player and eventually grows from a douche into a worthy trainer because fighting him for the last time shows his Golbat evolve into Crobat which is only done through happiness and they even enhance him further in Gen4.
easily has the best character development imo.
Cyrus eventually evolved his golbat into Crobat, and he was a ****ing megalomaniac apathetic monster that hated his pokemon, and hated his team, so what is your point there. As for Silver; Barry , Cheren, and Bianca all had character development. Cheren, for example, went from only doing what would make him stronger to doing good for the sake of doing good. He knew you were better than him towards the end, so he set off to strengthen himself. All Silver did was act like a **** for the entire game, and then question his actions, and Gary was just some loser who just wanted to beat you.
Also, I feel that was a big problem with all of the games except D/P/Pt. Everyone had the generic rodent (except for team Magma, but Poochyena were quite common), and then some poison/dark types. Team Galactic used anything from a glameow to a croagunk to a beautifly, and I don't think a single one had bidoof. However, for all of the crap I give D/P/Pt, I still think it's better than R/B/Y/Fr/Lf and G/S/C/HG/SS.

DON'T RESURRECT MY THREAD AGAIN, I'M SO ANNOYED I HAD TO USE AN ALT GAH caps
Definitely opinions.
I would take off my rose-tinted goggles but I'm here on a recently-purchased (secondhand) Advance SP playing my original (~13 year old) Pokemon Red cartridge (new game, old save seems to have been my brother's. Stupid Pokemon names and he chose Blastoise as a starter. On Red). It's still perfectly enjoyable. This is less nostalgia and more "Gorb is playing the game on his Advance as he is writing this post".
From what I have read of Barry in the manga (and seen in Diamond) the only way he would make me ragequit is by being a massively annoying child. But that is simply my opinion.
EDIT: wow this is a significant necro. I don't mind, skelo is being bad and hating on the earlier generations.
Also, I find the line "Team Rocket didn't do much beyond create Mewtwo" hilarious. The strongest Gen I Pokemon. Perhaps the strongest in Gen II. One of the strongest in Gen III. I don't know much beyond that but his moveset and stats are still around the godly level, even with power creep.
Even if that was all they ever did, that's a massive raging huge impact on the game (and don't even get me started on the lore/manga, Blaine, the Deoxys arc, Ash, Mew sightings, etc).

Still ontopic but did anyone realise there are up to 15 pokemon movies. I only watched the first 3 as a kid. Why does Ash always carry that useless Pikachu. Rhetorical question.
