LOL hi,
I has a concern.
It is apparent that we recently lost a big chunk of our competitive scene to dota 2, and it is also pretty apparent - at least to me - why. I believe the only reason people are abandoning the hon-ship is that there simply is no way to make enough money playing this game on a competitive level; I've yet to come across a single competitive player tell me that dota 2 is a better game than hon (many have said the opposite), albeit this might be a pretty well known observation, I thought I'd just put it out there now for the sake of my argument.
Now - to put this into perspective - I could probably potentially make around 300-500 dollars a week if I played hon 8 hours a day for a whole week, or 56 hours, which is more than a fulltime job. You may argue that this I should just be happy to get paid to play hon since I'd do it anyway, but when I (and others) are done with school, fact is that playing hon on a competitive level simple takes too much time for too little profit. If the prizepools stay at a measly 500 dollars per week when I'm done with school, I could see myself hopping on the dota-bandwagon just to have a gaming career that isn't a complete waste of my time.
My theory is that teams/players will continue to quit for dota (or in rare cases even LoL) unless the potential prizes increase drastically (200-400 dollar first prizes split in 5 is nothing if you have to support yourself - and that's assuming you win).
"rofl noobG you're a trashcan who would fund this!?"
Easy - S2 should. I'm not going to pretend to know how much revenue S2 makes, but I would argue that even if they can't currently support higher prize pools, they have to invest in the competitive scene anyway for the sake of their business and this game. This is pure survival; they will not compete with dota or LoL if they can't at least partially match their scenes - I will quit if they don't, and my guess is that many share my views.
Alternatively, you could probably make some smaller user-funded tournaments where people can donate a few bucks to a prize pool which is then played for every month. I could probably see this hit maybe a 1000 dollars or so a month - which is definitely worth playing for (still not enough to make me stay in the long run, though).
xoxo,
El champione // noobG
I agree with you here. Seems like they're busy getting HoNTour up even though it's been delayed for quite some while. It's also hard for S2 Games to find someone they can trust to handle the money and sponsor that person/organization with a big chunk of money. Yeye they could take care of paying out themselves.
I agree with you that there should be higher prizepools for tourneys. Maybe not $1m like the invitational for DotA 2 but at least $100 000 or something that will actually keep this scene alive and bring new teams.

A monthly cup with a 10,000$ prize pool should be the minimum imo, atleast until hontour is up.
Good post, nothing I haven't read before, but your points are valid, this is a post for ideas from the community itself to come forth.
I feel that there is set alot of focus on pleasing the community when it comes to activity and entertainment from the competitive scene. Sadly that's not enough for the players themselves. As they need a better reason to play.
As alot of hon pros have already stated, they love this game, especially in comparison with other Mobas, and they would hate to leave Heroes of Newerth. But it's getting to the point where they feel like they have no choice and the fun in playing the game just isn't enough of a reason for them to stay.
WE NEED THIS TO HAPPEN
well currently your option either play the game you like for actual fun and competition (whats left of it), or go pro and play dota 2
hontour has been announced like a year ago.....i wont hold my breath on it coming out before next dreamhack
in fact it would probably be announced at dreamhack summer.... like they promised to announce it at DHW lol
prizepools isnt the main reason people are quitting/moving on - its the way S2 has handled things lately - buisiness model, balance, hontour etc. I think very few players try to "make a living" or "supporting themselves" from hon (for good reason), the money income is just a nice byproduct.

I don't think people leave just cause of the 'Balance' it might be a factor, but infact most of them leave cause of the cash.
I'm pretty sure S2 could host some tournies themselves, or have for example StreTT or tankZa being the admins of their tourny and give them the cash.
Not sure about hontour, idk how much cash it involves. But I guess it wouldn't hurt S2 at all if they held a monthly tourny with ATLEAST 5k $. Like that's really not much to ask for.
S2 should release a $2 million tourney and win the moba scene )
Now?
Just out of curiosity, what's wrong with the business model? Or releasing heroes every 2 weeks part of it?
I agree with OP. More money, more competitors, healthier competitive scene. I just wish companies would take more interest in HoN and actually host tournaments. Fnatic is one thing, but their recent tourney has a small pricepool, but unfortunately apart from them and It's Gosu, we don't see other companies running tournies.
Mysterious TDM organization step up? New GG.net/HoN maybe?
What vio said.
+ No offence but to put the trolling in constructive terms: HoN as an esport isn't at the place to support people as full-time professional gamers, and it's completely unrealistic to expect that. It never has been, and frankly unless some big barriers change it never will be. Hontour has the potential but, well, we still know nothing. I agree HoN is the better game but the better things don't always win out. So it goes.
First of all I don't really get players posting on these boards expecting to be professional gamers and having s2 spoon feed them with money. What ever happened to playing a game because its fun. and if you're really good at it perhaps making a bit of cash on the side? Very few players can make a living of playing games, and those players are playing the most popular games in the world right now like sc2 and LoL, being the absolute top players out of million of players.
What HoN needs is a real community and players helping out praising the games, popularizing it in the eyes of outsiders instead of constantly bashing it. Consider this: Would you try to play a game, if you see players who already plays it constantly bash it?
Cause what the game really needs is more players and more importantly people who wants to help the game grow, arranging tournaments, leagues and LANS attracting outside sponsors etc. Thats how all the other popular competetive games like counterstrike, stracraft and dota did it, not by begging the creators for money but by loving their games, playing the **** out of it and eventually in time competing in it.
This community needs to learn how to walk before it can run, having smaller frequent tournaments like the old GR and luckily we see Its Gosu now trying to do something of the same, is a great way of letting players play competitive games and having fun with the game, evolving their game and staying sharp for when something bigger comes around. I don't get how people in here expect 100k tournaments popping out everywhere, in a game where the competitive scene is as small as it is in HoN. The scene needs to grow from the bottom and up, encouraging people to get together and make teams in order to play competitively. I feel like weekly/monthly smaller tournaments and leagues, maybe even an ingame 5v5 ladder and so forth can really help and unite the community once again from this broken state we have at the moment. People and players alike should really get behind, and support these kind of tournaments, and thereby encourage others to create tournaments/leauges/LANS whatever.
Don't get me wrong, I think its great if s2 supports their game, and i encourage them to do so. But at the same time I feel the community and the competitive scene is really letting s2 down more, than s2 is letting the community down. The constant bashing and the constant money begging I see on here makes me sick. Its like players expect to be professional gamers, and they want s2 to pay for it. And now we even see players like this noobG, who never really achieved anything in the game, coming on the boards expecting to be a professional gamer, and expecting s2 to pay for it so he wont leave for Dota2. Newsflash for you buddy, you aren't even that good, and if you went to play Dota2 you would most likely get dumped on and make even less than you do in HoN. Stop being deluded about turning in to a professional gamer, and try to help the community and competitive scene grow, if you want something to happen. You could for instance ask the PORT management to perhaps do some tournaments, helping them out telling them how to run it and asking them to speak with sponsors, honcast and s2 alike to maybe make something happen.
Rofl, you're going to become a full-time gamer after going to school and for HoN of all games? That is the most retarded thing I have ever heard. Save yourself the $40,000 and just drop out since you probably have no ambitions with your major. Your time in school will have absolutely no impact on your gaming and your future job at Taco Bell when your plans fall through.
waRRR
if you dont know whats wrong with the buisiness model from a competitor's standpoint/most hon players overall i doubt my explanation will change your mind

I think it's rather myopic to think that the only reason you think people are leaving is due to prize purses. I've heard Loda, SingSing, phe'v,Drayich, Trixi and numerous others say that DotA 2 is the superior game. Obviously there are those that think HoN is the superior game, but if they're willing to stop playing the game they have more fun in, simply for a higher prize purse they may or may not even get is silly.
Having aspirations to make a living off of these games is still not a reality except for a small few competitors, play the one you find more enjoyable and let the chips fall where they may.
So much this. If you're doing eSports for the money you're doing it wrong.play the one you find more enjoyable and let the chips fall where they may.
ok what seems to be the problem here is that you think i implied that i wanted to live off playing games.
more money > less money
I hate to say this, but why are you going to school if all you want to do is play video games after you receive your degree? I could understand if you were in school and still pursuing your degree, but why would you continue to try and play competitively and make a living off playing video games, especially HoN for that matter.
Sincerely,
A confused bystander
P.S. I agree hon prize pools suck, etc, etc
To be able to "make a living" of playing video games you need to earn ALOT of money.
Cause you need to be able to retire before you hit 30 cause the youngsters will ****ing destroy you by then...
If you havnt raised any money by then... well, atleast you will have McDonalds to rely on.
Gooby pls...
