My understanding is that they are just trying to prevent valve from copy-writing/trademarking (whichever applies) the word DOTA.
I thought Riot already prevented that?

Riot owned DotA-Allstars, LLC, which was run by Pendragon. They did attempt to prevent it, but Valve won, so they sold DotA-Allstars, LLC to Blizzard, probably because they knew Blizzard would have a better chance at beating Valve and Pendragon could get even with IceFrog. Unfortunately for them, Valve's case is now stronger than ever.
I think Blizzard DOTA aka BDOTA will be great. They are not trying to make a not as good copy of hon or dota but actually adress a few issues those games have. I'm excited!
It is coming soon in blizzard terms. So dont bother worying about it for the next few years..
Shame on the ones that have wings, but don't use them to fly.

Well, it will be nothing like any of the MOBA games around. It's just the base vs base race basically, they just give their own twist to it. Will probably never beat any of the current moba games around and is most likely going to be a casual sc2 custom game.
"We are working on blizzard dota, which we hope will come out this year"
Which I guess means no BDOTA in 2012 ^^.
Guess they really want it to become a competitor. I was hoping on a more casual game.
Well.... they are making it more casual? Less complex item building and less complex hero stats etc.
