They never were ideal for him. Geobane/Manta was never really ideal for him (he was always considered the weakest viable holder of those because of Soulsteal), only that certain effects propagated on illusions that have since been removed, namely Skadi/FWS and Savage/MKB.
Desolator SF has always been retarded strong, but plays into a very disable-heavy setup required, especially if you're not overlevelled and overfarmed relatively - if you're using Dagger to set yourself up for a BKB ult.
Let me spell it out plain for you
Angry people complain about the things I do
I'm not changing direction, I'm stepping my game up
Maintaining my name, the same way I came up.

Truth is, I thought it mattered
    I thought that music mattered.
    But does it? Bollocks!
Not compared to how people matter.

SS is my most played hero - I simply love how powerful his lane presence is (yes I said it). True I'm 1400mmr but I've been queued up against upto 1650 and I have done well mid almost always. I don't think any melee hero can do much against him mid (unless its something like TREE - retarded I know but it happened - 32 denies by tree in 10 minutes).

Anyways, SS is weak. Too squishy, too slow, and the number of souls lost per death is way too much. He needs:

    - Increased starting strength
    - Increased movespeed
    - Decreased cast time for demon hands
    - Death penalty decreased from half souls to 1/3 souls

I go straight for Assassin's Shroud after my boots. Easy hat-tricks and quad-kills in team fights with that super-30soul-ulti

SS most be played as a dual line hero now a day and not as a solo mid. There is no way this hero could hold its groud in solo mid now a day. He would get trashed on by popular solo mid heroes and even more by dual lining mid teams like pebbles / glacius or such.

Putting him solo side line is even less of an option... obvious reasons don't think they need to be explained.

So, we need to dual line him with someone like Glacius or Monarch... Now, when would you prefer a Glacius / SS to a Glacius / FA say? FA will provide similar damage early on, more from 6 to 11 due to ultimate, doesn't rely on portal key to start being useful, has an immobilize...

The problem might be FA, but overall, SS doesn't cut it compared to FA in a dual line scenario.

Ye the 450 magic nuke dmg for cost of 150 mana on ss is irrelevant as well I mean getting magmus who can stun in for 220 dmg and than following it up with a 450 magic dmg 2 nukes from ss is invalid strat and fa will do a lot more dmg. At the same time when fa uses her ulti it cannot be dodged like a SS ulti !

SS doesnt need pk to start being usefull as well ... lvl 7 600 nuke dmg with 2 demon hands, yep it sounds useless, god this bad hereos !

Not saying that ss is a sidelane beast, but he can be very effective there, only prob will be the pushed up lanes but kills at a price of pushed lane are still fair trade off.

Im still stating that ss needs more movement speed, 310 or 315 and he will become very effective side lane semi/hard carry with - armor based item build up dps style

I have seen him in a few games recently for the first time in a long while......and he has been dominated every time. They need to revert the nerfs on SS. He still wouldn't be top tier, but at least he would be playable again.

The recent buffs might give him a better chance to survive early in lane, one of his few true downsides.
