Reasoning:
By auto-combining Boots + Shield of the Five, you gain +1 all stats (a minor totem) but lose +2 armor for you and your teammates. This suggestion brings that lost armor back. Keep in mind the +2 armor buff for Shield Of The Five lasts 30 seconds with a 25 second cooldown for a mana cost of 10. It is effectively permanent.
The point is that you should somehow be able to get +7 armor out of Plated Greaves, considering Shield Of The Five gives +7 by itself.

that armor is not permanent because you need to use mana for that i guess.
I find it irritating that a separated red boots + shield of five (if you could keep them from combining) would be more beneficial for you and your team than if you were to combine them (not counting pushing / minion situations).
7 armor is quite alot imo. Seems more like a balance issue o:
Shield of the Five gives 7 armor by itself. The buff duration lasts longer than the cooldown, and the mana cost is negligable. In addition to the +7 armor to self, it also gives +2 armor to every allied hero and every allied creep.
As I said previously, a Shield of the Five with no boots buffs self and allied heroes better than the "upgraded" Plated Greaves.

I think its a good idea.
I also think that plated greaves need some sort of buff to be on par with the other two boots though. a 200 gold recipe and +2-3 all stats, +5 MS in addition to the +2 armor you suggested.

Alternative solution: Depending on the type of unit, applies a separate buff. Heroes keep the Shield of Five buff, creeps get the existing Plated Greaves buff. This also makes more sense considering that both these items share a casting cooldown yet have completely different actives.

Plated's were nerfed way back when they were considered big items and too good.
It was just never brought back to its former glory.
(Also +7 armour isn't OP, as usually Steams provide more EHP earlier anyway)

I voted yes specifically for the alternate suggestion. Keeping the current creep active for creeps only and adding back the Shield buff for heroes would make Greaves strong, but only on heroes that should benefit from them the most (pet heroes and pushers that benefit from large creep waves and early survivability i.e. Rhapsody)
Yes. All I have to add is that the armor buff from Shield of the five should be the same as the one from Plated Greaves so that they don't stack.
As long as the armor doesnt apply too the creeps im happy ^^
