Come join us on S2's Official IRC Network run by ChattingAway Network owner Ryan. We have a number of channels (and the ability to create your own) related to HoN and it is visited regularly by S2 Staff. This is your chance to interact more frequently and directly with us, and have a lot of fun along the way.
Below is a guide to getting started on IRC, how to join our channels, and where to find us. Thanks to [S2]iGuy and DenyTheTruth for their work on this guide.
IRC/mIRC Guide
Getting Connected
Welcome to the IRC/mIRC Guide. Sections I and II of this guide will assume that you are using Windows 98 or above. If you are not using Windows you will have to use a separate client, such as X-Chat. For those that are curious, IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat and has been around for a very long time. It's lightweight, easy to run, and very customizable. All of this makes it an ideal system for chatting.

Section I - Getting Started
Step One: InstallationThis installation guide will walk you through the installation of mIRC. It includes everything you need for mIRC, including the download link. It also has some great basic tips on how to get started.Step Two: Joining A Server
Wait! I get a pop-up asking me to register first.Optional Settings
mIRC is not entirely free. You can use it as long as you like but if you do not pay you will always be asked to register. After 30 days it will ask you twice. All you must do is wait the time limit and then click continue both times. No other options are restricted and if you keep your mIRC running you won't have to do this very often. Alternatively, you can pay and register your mIRC.
Once you have installed the client you will notice that it asks you to fill out the following information:
- Full Name: (Put your first name only)
- Email Address: (put a valid email address - this will be used to send you your password if necessary - more on this later)
- Nickname: (Put your forum name)
- Alternative: (Put an alternate name incase your first choice was taken)
After you have filled out the information you need to:
- Click "Servers" found to the left of the information you just filled out
- Locate "ChattingAway" in the list
- Click "Select" to the right of the server list
To auto-join the #hon channel on mIRC startup:Back to the required stuff.
- Click "Options"
- Click "Connect on startup"
- Click "Perform"
- Do NOT Click "Enable perform on connect"*
- Type "/nick (the nick you chose on the first page)" (no quotes) and press enter
- Type /ns identify (the password you will be using) (no quotes) and press enter
- Type "/timer1 3 1 /join #hon" exactly as I have typed (no quotes)
- Click "OK"
Now we're ready to connect to the server.Step Three: Register Your Nick
* If you've already gone through this guide once or if you've already registered your name via another client you can check the "Enable perform on connect". The reason I ask you not to at this point is because you will normally get errors but that won't happen if you're already registered. If you have any questions, please ask.
- Click "Connect" in the menu
- Click "Connect" (the button this time)
- Once you connect a "mIRC Favorites" window will come up. This isn't required. Deselect "Pop up favorites on connect" if you don't want it to come up.
- Click "OK" on "mIRC Favorites"
Wait! I accidentally clicked OK somewhere in there instead of following your instructions.
No problem. Just click the lightning bolt in the top left of the program. The lightning bolt will break in half and you will connect if all has gone according to plan. Don't forget to follow the steps regarding the "mIRC Favorites".
Congratulations! You should have seen a bunch of text in the "Status Window". The status window says "ChattingAway (followed by your nick)" at the top of the mIRC client just under all the buttons. This includes the MOTD, Message of the Day, among other things.
Note: All of the buttons have hover-over effects so just hover over them to see what they do. If you don't understand what the hover over means DO NOT click on it to find out. Some of the buttons can cause negative effects to your client. The help tool on mIRC is extremely robust. Click "Help" followed by "Contents" or "Search" at the top to see all of the functions mIRC offers.
This is perhaps the most important step. This will ensure that you always have access to your nick and all the powers associated with that nick. To register your nick:Step Four: Joining a channel
- Type /ns register "password" "email" (no quotes) - Example: /ns register heartchavo my@email.com
- If you get a message telling you to wait 30 seconds... WAIT!
Here we will discuss how to join #honOptional Settings - Revisited
- Type /join #hon
It's that simple. You'll join the channel, see some information about the channel, see the topic, and then whatever conversation is currently taking place if any. To your right you can see the list of users.
Once you have been given permanent invite status you can go back and check the "perform on connect" box. Simply:
- Click "Tools"
- Click "Options"
- Click "Options" in the menu on the left
- Click "Perform"
- Check "Enable perform on connect"
- Click "OK"
- Click "OK" again
Alright, now you're all set. Whenever you connect to mIRC you will automatically join #hon.
Section II - mIRC & You
mIRC is a very robust and versatile client. It not only has the ability to let you simply join and participate in a chat room but it also has its own scripting language that you could use for all sorts of interesting things. mIRC is only limited by your imagination and the IRC Server you are on. Here are some of the basic things that every user should know.
Basic CommandsAll commands start with a "/" (no quotes). This tells IRC/mIRC that you are attempting to do something other than speak. In fact, even simply saying something has a command but since it's the default command you don't have to type it. Here is a brief list of basic commands that any user can use:Menu Commands
- /amsg: This will send a message to every channel you're in. - Example: /amsg hi everybody
- /me: Allows you to use actions. - Example: /me is awesome
- /ame: This will allow you to use actions in every channel you're in. - Example: /ame is awesome
- /msg (username): Allows you to send a whisper to another user. - Example: /msg iGuy You're the best.
- /query (username): Same as /msg.
- /join #(channel): Joins a channel. - Example: /join #hon
- /part: Leaves the current channel.
- /knock #(channel): Requests an invite to a channel. - Example: /knock #balance
- /ns help: Lists all of the nickserv commands available to you. - Example: /ns help register
- /cs help: Lists all of the chanserv commands available to you. - Example: /cs help register
- /ns identify (password): Identifies you with your current nick. Example: /ns identify heartchavo
This list is not all-inclusive.
Some commands are used frequently enough that they were included in a right-click menu. To access these commands:
- Right-click on target user
- Navigate to "Control"
- Choose desired effect
- If applicable - Give reason why.
Options available are:
- Ignore: Ignores a user
- Unignore: Unignores a user
- Op: Gives user operator status
- Deop: Removes operator status
- Voice: Gives user a voice (only effective in rooms that require voice)
- Devoice: Removes voice from a user (only effective in rooms that require voice)
- Kick: Kicks a user
- Kick (why): Kicks a user with a reason
- Ban: Bans a user (does not kick)
- Ban, Kick: Bans and kicks a user
- Ban, Kick (why): Bans and kicks a user with a reason why
- Slap!: Slaps a user around a bit with a large trout
Section III - X-Chat For Windows Users
Step 1: Downloading & Installing X-ChatThis one is quite easy: simply follow go here and download X-Chat. X-Chat installs just like any other normal application. You can choose which parts of the program you want to install. Even if you don't want to use plug-ins I suggest you mark everything.Step 2: Configuring X-ChatStart X-Chat
- Fill in a first, second, and third nick
- Add a user name (can be same as your nick)
- Add your real name (optional)
- Click "Add"
- Change "New Network" to "ChattingAway"
- Add your real name (optional)
- Select "ChattingAway"
- Hit Enter
Now add the Server
- Click "Edit"
- Double-click on "newserver/6667"
- Change it to "irc.s2games.com/6667"
- Hit Enter
Now that you've done all that:
- Confirm "Use Global User Information" is checked
- Check "Auto Connect to network at startup"
- Click in the "Favorite Channels" field
- Add "#hon" (no quotes)
- Add any other desired channels (separate all channels by commas)
- Click the "Nickserv password" field
- Type your future password (we'll choose one soon)
Finally, hit "Close". You should now be back to the Network List window. Hit "Connect" here. You might get a few errors now if you did not choose to install the extra programs from the website in the beginning. These won't matter unless you wish to use plug-ins so just skip through them.
Now that you're connected you'll be told that your nick isn't registered. To fix this you're going to register your nick. You do this by:
- Click on the text field
- Type /msg nickserv register "password" "email" (no quotes) - Example: /msg nickserv register heartchavo my@mail.com
- Hit Enter
Now to enter #hon:
- Type /join #hon
Congratulations, you've now configured XChat to automatically "login" and join #hon every time you start it.
