Some quick basics:
IRC nice simple chat protocol, its great for conference-like chatting. HoN's ingame chat is very irc-like as in commands are all proceeded via a /
eg;
/nick foo will change your nick to foo
/me is happy will emote *foo* is happy
/join #foo will join the room #foo (shorthand /j #foo)
to register you nick
/msg nickserv register PASSWD EMAIL

quassel http://quassel-irc.org/ (monolithic install) qt4 based client-core arrangement (good for setting up bouncers).
leafchat http://www.leafdigital.com/software/leafchat/ nice simple irc client
icechat http://www.icechat.net/site/ a bit fugly but its personal taste
Once more: this channel is run by members of the community. As such, they are free to operate it how they choose, and feedback about how the channel is run should be sent to them rather than me.

Be relatively nice to people when possible. We all get heated about stuff in here, but as long as it's over when the conversation is over then it's fine. Nobody's really going to punish you for not being perfectly polite about things, as long as it's not just an attempt to just insult someone constantly.
If you're against swearing, don't bother joining. We do discuss things that aren't strictly balance related, like how loudly certain s2 devs would moan in bed and how selling out is bad.
Suggestions aren't the devil in here, but expect people to actually tell you it's stupid if it is.

Update: We've had around 30-40 visitors lately, with more than half of those definitely sticking around so that's awesome to see!
Few quick notes on the topic and such, if you have something interesting to discuss or link, I'll usually change the topic (like when a bunch of us go and watch NASL games or even DHW coming up) so don't be afraid to ask or talk.
We're friendly (except if you believe tank is a role, loljk)
