Thread wasn't about which was better, just the difference in damage.
from everything i got from this thread i must say spellshards maybe does more damage, but now look at it like this
shards 170~ ish more damage in a combo, cost slightly more gold, offers no health or mana, slightly shorter cd's on port key steam bath, lavasurge, nothign worth mentioning really, just around 1 second.
staff gives more pulses, so missing a few isnt as much of a big deal, meanwhile it also has a larger aoe radius, and teh slow will last longer duo to more pules.
so yes, in raw damage the shards will win, however magmus is not there for that extra 170 damage, he's there for his controll, sotm gives him a longer lasting slow aswell as a shorter cd ultimate, the ultimate is all that magus is for at endgame in teamfights, in general, sure the stun is usefull and all but he's mainly there to do a succesfull ultimate, this is much better to do with staff then with shards!

I don't understand this. If you're able to farm up 4.3k as Magmus, it's already at the point in the game where your enemies can just shrug off your damage (especially so if they have shrunken head). A couple hundred extra damage for 4k? You might as well get Codex if you're looking for damage.
The utility of disables (Stormspirit, Sheepstick) or Tablet would far, far outweigh the pathetic extra damage you get from SOTM or Spellshards.
did not read the whole thread but
spellshards = damage cuts through magic armor more with all of your skills, and COOLDOWN REDUCTIONs on all of your skills AND on portal key cooldown reduction. you might not think it's much but the lowered cooldowns are actually quite noticeable when you're adept at playing magmus, you'll notice you'll just be able to do stuff a lot more often
so spellshards, get it first over sotm. but i personally do: :Glowstone: and then Spellshards, assuming I'm going both :StaffOfTheMaster: and Shards. the glowstone is just really nice to get first for raw stats early on in terms of cost effectiveness
and if my farm's nice enough to grab a :AcolytesStaff: early on from dominating, i'll take that and grab :FrostfieldPlate: before sotm, as it helps you have unlimited mana coupled with Spellshards regen, AND it has the lowered cooldowns from spellshards as well as the damage cut as well, and it's HUGE in combo with ult for initiating as people will get slowed and just get raped

spellshards does +~150-200 more dmg than staff.
But staff gives u extra hp and mana....
