Try to kill heroes and last hit creeps. (And try not to die.)

You should buy runes of the blight and/or health potion(s) when the game is started. This is very important because you might stay longer in your lane. Moreover, play defensivly so you don't get harassed to much or even die. Just play on, you'll collect the experience by yourself.

    Good Luck!

If you keep having problems with levels its probably due to a few reasons.

    Things to look out for:
    - Stay in range of xp! One of the most common errors amongst new players is to stay too far back when the creeps dies. When creeps dies you have to be within range to get xp. The range is aproximately 2/3 of your computer screen if i recall correcly. Try to be aware of it and you'll learn the distance fast.

    - Try to stay in your lane early game. Every time you leave your lane, to heal or whatever, you loose xp. So be sure to get some items like runes of blight or hp regen.

    - Try not to idle around. This is personally the mistake i make the most myself. While waiting for a push or similar, try not to just stand around and wait. Look around to check if there's any places nearby where you can get some xp instead.

Regarding jungling. Try to search the forums for some guides. There's some great ones. Jungling can be excelent xp, but requires proper techniques and heroes to be truly effective. Its not recommended for a new player .

Ask away if you got any questions, and let me know if something didnt make sense since im pretty high right now.

Was that even necessary? How do you know this guy doesn't actually have trouble keeping up in level, leave the one line call outs to mods/assistant.

@OP: You say you have more hero kills which can be good, but you also say you spend a lot of time in the forest. Neutral Creeps ( The creeps in the forest) give less Exp than the creeps in the lanes. Try carrying TP scrolls, and stay in lanes that look like they have a lesser chance of getting ganked. For example, one with no heroes enemy or friendly that is pushed past your first tower, and just farm those lanes. That should keep you up to par with levels.

    Hope this helped

Link to one such guide Although this is written for Legionnaire, Element's guide tells you everything you will ever need to know about the jungle. Just scroll down/Control F until you see "Jungle Basics" in blue.

The only other thing I can mention is that you need to minimize your trips back to base. Don't return unless you absolutely have to, and make sure to buy all the items you need before you even arrive, so that your only delay in getting back to your lane is health/mana regen.

Laning by far is the best way to get xp to level up, if you get some hero kills here and there that's a bonus!

know your hero's strengths and weaknesses. If your hero is strong at laning, lane. If you're good at ganking, gank. If you're good at aoe dmg, abuse the jungle.

There is an option in the menu screen that you can turn on that allows you to see purple XP numbers come off corpses when you gained XP for a kill.

This would be very very useful in helping you make sure you're in range of the XP .

    No. You are.

    @OP

Try to avoid dying as much as possible. Farm when it's safe and know when to retreat to the safety of towers (early game ~ early mid game) or stay with your teammates (mid ~ late game)

The levels that you get are sometimes also determined by the type of hero u have. Sometimes u might find yourself a lower level with supportive heroes/initiators because u help to kill, but sometimes die before the others so you miss out on exp. It's alright to be a few levels behind if you do your job and help out the team to win

and yup battery is the most imba early game item there is :P

instant hp/mana regen for avoiding death/1 more skill is kewl

If you're playing EM, it's better to lane. You should basically never forest in an EM game.
