Netflix uses Microsoft Silverlight, supposedly because it comes with certain DRM that makes it difficult to copy their movies. Supposedly, their content providers would refuse to let them stream anything if they didn't use this particular DRM. The open source equivalent doesn't work, and it's not because the programmers are lazy or haven't gotten to it - it's Microsoft's DRM, not theirs.

I don't buy the excuse, because Hulu streams over Flash and has no problem getting content from their providers. As does Amazon's Video On Demand service.
