Or if you are asking specifically for HoN, try both. If you see any difference, pick the one you prefer.
It's kind of like asking: Which is best, Nvidia or ATI?

I switched permanently to OpenGL because it never crashes and I can alt tab in 1 second. With D3D it took like 30 sec to alt tab out and it crashed 3 times a game. No brainer really. Graphics look the same.

OpenGL and tabbing in/out will be faster.
edit.. other guy beat me to it, the reason is DirectX kills the context when you tab so the game has the recreate it, no such problem with OpenGL. Some old ATI drivers might also have problems with OpenGL.

    Just go options.

The real question is "how does the change stay?". After turning it on opengl it switches back to direct x for some reason.

Modify the shortcut to HoN and add the following to the end of the target line:
    • -vid vid_gl2

it may be because i am retarded, but how exactly do i need to change the target line?

    target now:
    "C:\Program Files\Heroes of Newerth\hon.exe"
    target after edit:
    "C:\Program Files\Heroes of Newerth\hon.exe-vid vid_gl2"
lol, where does it go ><?

You have to change it to this:

    "C:\Program Files\Heroes of Newerth\hon.exe" -vid vid_gl2
