Not a bad idea, there could be a time limit you have to keep them alive for, before they become super towers.. e.g.

Front line towers - 20min
Mid line towers - 40min
Base towers - 60min

or whatever time limit was appropriate, therefore you would have to put effort into keeping them alive early game to be rewarded with them upgrading after a certain time.
