I used to play HoN for 2 years or more and I can say that the picks here were never so varied as in Dota2 right now. Basically this many heroes have been picked in the LAST MONTH:

i know you are not addressing me specifically, but hons competitive scene lacks variety too which is why i dont watch it. I have only just recently started watching comp dota and those are just my observations from the TI3 east and west qualifiers. so take it with a grain of salt.
In Dota2 sometimes you see pocket strategies with heroes you normally wouldn't see. Note, the qualifiers didn't really contain the best teams from the 2 regions, thus no teams who are actually willing to experiment, because they know they are that good. Apart from DD maybe, who like to innovate ****. Goblak > ALL
A few examples would be:
Alliance running strategies with Treant + Ogre
Alliance picking up unusual carries like Phantom Assasin, Spectre or Sniper
Fnatic basically brought back Alchemist to the meta and also tends to use unorthodox heroes in unorthodox lanes, like Naga offlane
Team Dignitas successfuly used Spectre + Warlock
We have seen Io + Riki from teams, which is very clever
As for the likes of Gyro being played almost every game, I think has a lot to do with him being an effective counter to Phantom Lancer and people are all scared of cancer.
It is probably due to the fact that he is a retardly good carry and one of the most OP heroes currently in the game. That Flak Cannon is stupidly OP. Not many Pro teams seem to be scared of PL at all. Flak Cannon probably needs to have it's damage reduced by a percentage or the range somehow confined.

Well, yeah, maybe. Gyro has been used a couple of times last year as well, but not with a lot of success. See Thor Open, where Sven was still the goto carry.
Flak Cannon is indeed OP though. Gyro just needs to be shut down early as well, but the thing is he can work in a solo lane as well.
Gyro is the Draconis of DotA but i like Gyro more!
I left HoN at about the exact same time when Dragon became popular, but I think he turned into this uber farmer more due to the fact that the ancients are not magic immune in HoN.
Hell, Batrider would be even more batshit(pun intended) OP if that would be the case in Dota.
flak cannon seems a bit retarded 1000 aoe all around you, should only be in like a 90 degree angle in front of you or up to 180 possibly if thats too weak.
Flak Cannon is the only thing that puts Gyro over the top. It's like Split Arrow but better, since although Split Arrow is constantly up, Flak Cannon hits everything in the fight for full damage, and the hits he gets off of it is enough for most team fights. It's a pain in the ass to lane against as well, at least on a pub level. If he's not afraid to push a bit he can farm and harass the hell out of you at the same time. Him, Bat Rider, Lone Druid, and Life Stealer are the ones I want to see nerfed the most. I'm tired of them being picked or banned in every single game.

Talking about Chinese models for DotA 2 apparently even more of the skill icons have changed into non-violent* ones. Blood Seeker's ulti is now a fking rainbow. All the skill icons with skulls and blood have been changed or colored black. I know this has been happening for a long time in Dota 2 and many games obviously. http://imgur.com/a/VGG6s#kRaSZkE
