betraying the martyrs reminds me of a mix of suicide silence and attack attack, the latter of which is the worst band in metal (along with asking alexandria). suicide silence is ****ing awesome tho.
Well that certainly weren't my thing. (I say this as politely as I could)
A band that doesn't get much recognition is Malevolent Creation.
They've had a few bad records but also some very excellent ones.
In my own view their 2 best albums are The Ten Commandments and Retribution, in that order.
Both are very high quality Death Metal, the first being one of my all-time favorite albums of the genre. A song from each to let you see:
Malevolent Creation - Premature Burial - from TTC
Malevolent Creation - Slaughter of Innocence - from Retribution
Their latest effort Invidious Dominion is a very solid record, and way better than Doomsday X. Sort of a return to form in my opinion.
Another band I'd like to pass on is Control Denied.
Anyone who ever dove just an inch into the universe of the band Death should know of this band and if not, they missed out bigtime.
And no, it's not a Death metal band but in fact a Progressive Power Metal band, and no, Chuck isn't singing either but Tim Aymer, and he's doing a fantastic job at that.
Their one and only album is called The Fragile Art of Existence and is a masterpiece!
Every single song is just amazing and the skill and musicianship from all parts considered is just top drawer stuff.
I've personally owned the album since it came out in 1999 and have since then listened to it at the very least once a month. It's that good!
Now I don't mind singling out just one song, but I urge you to check out every second of the album if you like what you hear from the one I post, and try to pick up the record as it is worth every penny 5 times over.

I've come the conclusion that since I really, really dislike pervasive, machinegun style blast beats, I'm probably missing out on a lot of good bands - especially when it comes to black metal (though I really don't care for anything that has been purposely made with low production values, so that's also working against me listening to a lot of BM bands).
For example, I'm sure Dark Funeral is great for a lot of people, but I think 90% or more of their music is blast beat driven. Then I give a band like Gorgoroth a listen (ignored them for, well, until last month) and discover they have a lot of songs I really like - surprised the hell out of me as I automatically assumed their songs would be swimming with blast beats as well.
Anyhow, I guess what I'm getting at is I need recommendations for good black metal that meets this criteria. Any suggestions?
On a side note:
The new Skeleton Witch - Forever Abomination (black/thrash metal) is phenomenal, as is Vallenfyre - A Fragile King (death/doom).
I'm not into Gorgoroth myself but perhaps a band like Horned Almighty would be of use then?
Horned Almighty - Metal-Archives page for insight.
It's more Rock-ish styled Black Metal fused with Punk so the double bass isn't blasted 24/7 and it's not all to serious.
Horned Almighty - Discipline of the Almighty - This is from The Devil's Music: Songs of Death and Damnation.
Also, I know they don't fit the criteria, but you just HAVE to listen to Emperor! I saw them live at Wacken Open Air 2007 and it is still in my top 5 of best concerts I've been to. (which is more than a few)
Some examples:
Emperor - The Loss And Curse Of Reverence
Emperor - I Am the Black Wizards
Emperor - Curse you All Men!
Emperor - Inno A Satana
Unfortunately, Emperor is pretty much the epitome of what I don't like about a lot of black metal; it's very blast beat driven. I'm sure they're an awesome band, they just aren't for me.
It's possible that black metal is a sub-genre that isn't going to offer up very many bands I like. It's a shame, too, because I'm pretty much all over the place with my taste: Mastodon, Ensiferum (with Jari on lead, preferrably), Bolt Thrower, Ghost, to name a small few. All very different bands, all very awesome, IMO.
Oh well, I'll keep digging. I'll be sure and give Horned Almighty a listen, too. Thanks!
Seriously, if you haven't seen Ensiferum live, do it. They are absolutely ****ing amazing live. Stole the show from CoBHC so hard.
Stats are like women in bikinis, they are interesting to look at however they don't show you everything.
Saw Ensiferum live, Cynic played next (lead guy was so stoned) and then Dark Funeral - these guys pretty much sucked, but the drummer was baws.
/CrabJuice thanks for the Malevolent Creation suggestion, good stuff =D
Thanks AvunaOs for the sig!
You're very welcome.
I'd be happy to share more, but that'll have to be another day.

Check out Ancestors Blood - To War and Glory
They play slow-paced pagan/atmospheric black metal. While the vocal style might not be appreciated by all, I love it.
On another note, I recently stumbled upon Illnath, a Danish BM band which I haven't heard for ages. Never really listened to them a lot, but I held the Audiosurf high score on their song Zetite for ages. Anyways, I checked out their Encyclopaedia Metallum page and noticed something odd. They looked clean and there was a chick in the photo. Checked the members, and just like I assumed, they now have a broad doing the vocals.
Long story short I recalled the discussion about females and growling, so I thought I'd let you guys tell me what you think about this.
New singer
Old Singer
While I never was a fan of them and they always sounded quite mainstream-friendly for being black metal (symphonic/melodic) reminding me of Cradle of Flith (not a good thing) it feels as if this switch is just to make them even more mainstream-friendly. The new songs are even less "extreme" and the new vocalist makes me think of Angela Gossow, though with a really monotone voice, and she sounds nothing at all like the singer of a black metal band.
Edit: @Like Moths To Flames I got a bad feeling about this song whilst listening to this song and reading the top rated comments. I prepared for some completely shitty teenage angsty metalcore ****, and while it wasn't quite as bad as I had feared, it wasn't far from it.
Just rediscovered those guys in my Youtube-favourites.
Some rather new and fresh Death Metal for ya'll![]()
Check out my DREAM-Hero, Feedback/Criticism appreciated.(Click the picture)

I actually like Dimmu Borgir even though they are mainstream compared to normal black metal. Most "true" metalheads I guess don't like them, but I myself can see myself listening to all of their albums, including the latest ones.
tis a shame they don't have the same bass guitarist and drummer nowadays though.
Stats are like women in bikinis, they are interesting to look at however they don't show you everything.
