Just bought HoN a few minutes ago, and I was looking for some people to play with that would be friendly and could help me learn the basics.
This will be my first time ever on HoN, though I've played LoL for the past maybe 6 months and made it to around 1600 elo. (I got tired of the free2play gay microtransaction part of LoL).
So hit me up in game if you're up for it, I'm going in game right now.
Also, can anyone recommend a few good starter heroes?
I used to like assassins like akali, or AD carries/junglers.
Also, I can't seem to find any games, like when I click on the public games it says none are found.

Welcome to HoN first of all.
Don't let the community eat you alive, so I suggest doing some nostats games to practice and learn what hero does, the pace of the game, etc.
I suggest a hero who is item independent (doesn't need much farm) and can stay in the sidelines of the team fight assisting others.
Some examples that allow you to do your thing while seeing what enemies do are:
As for Junglers I personally stay away from them until you learn the neutral camps, their strengths, and understand who/what is a threat while you jungle.

Okay, well playing AD carry in this carry (simply called carry in this game :X) is considered one of the hardest roles, so maybe you should consider going for assasin style heroes first. I would suggest heroes with a point and click stun like witch slayer, magmus, hammerstorm for a start.
Good luck with HoN! it is much harder than LoL i find. I started with HoN and decided to try LoL last month. Only played one game and went 24-4. But dont be discouraged by the ragers. pyro witch are good new player heroes.
- Keeper of the forest is perfect for you i think. Somewhat of a carry, simple skills and he can forest with great ease.
Three main things for HoN that are different than LoL:
- Stick with your team at first until you are confident ganking solo. Until u realise what most heroes do, you will get owned.
- Avoid auto-attacking in lane, HoN has denying and autoing can cripple your carry's farm, or increase their farm.

for AD carries, those are auto-attack carries, so Soulstealer, Silhouette, Puppet Master, and many more
for assassins like Akali, Wretched Hag, or Fayde will suit you
the main difference, and what you'll have to get used to is that jungling isn't a crucial part of the game, there are alot more kills during a game and it's alot easier to die, running back to your fountain is not an option, the map is ALOT bigger compared to LoL, lanes are alot longer, controling them properly is crucial, because it's alot easier to get ganked, wards are the most OP item in game and you should get used to buying them, stealth isn't considered imbalanced and it doesn't "reduce the fun factor of the game", controling your mana matters on every hero, items with health regeneration and mana regeneration (in HoN it's % of your natural regeneration you get from intelligence) influence the game greatly, imagine usefull items having philosopher's stone statistics and not slow your item build
most importantly, you don't have to spend a month just to be on the same level as a level 30 account, you don't have to buy anything from the shop (like IP boosts or rune pages) to be on the same level as people who spend IRL money on the game
as for general hero differences, no spells scale with stats directly, thus support heroes don't need any farm to be effective, here you don't need to take a single creep kill as Andromeda or Myrmidon to be effective in a 60 minute long game, support heroes make a huge difference and are widely played, also a support hero isn't by definition a hero which has a heal or a protective spell, other way around aswell, not every hero with a heal is a support hero. Other heroes are initiation heroes like Behemoth or Magmus which job is to start a fight, this job is alot more distinct than in LoL where you either get a Dash on some newbie or maybe run up to someone with Singed. Closest comparsion to a HoN initiator is Ashe. Levels are alot more important than gold early, items aren't as overpowered compared to the hero as in LoL, this ties to the support topic.
alot of items have activable components, so get used to it, no more maybe a Zonya Hourglass or maybe a Yomuu's Ghostblade which you might or might not activate, here it matters and you'll have to manage alot more than that. Get used to the courier, it's the reason why you don't leave your lane
in HoN you can manage any unit just like your own, many heroes spawn or take control over minions and you have to control them just like you do in any strategy game, use control groups, forget about using just one hero
and if Riot made you used to their weird buisness model, in HoN you can buy any item in the store with silver cions or gold coins, gold coins are purchased with IRL money, but you can earn silver coins by playing match making (it's like ranked games), only that you need few more of those, but nothing in the shop is game changing like runes, hero unlocks and rune pages are in LoL, so don't worry about it, in HoN shop doesn't imbalance the game

Thanks a ton guys. Dreta it looks like you have spent a good amount of time on LoL. Now I think I understand it a lot more.
So I've read few guides, it seems that strength is health and hp regen. Intelligence is mana and mana regen, and then agility is attack speed and armor? I think I've gotten a good handle on champions with their abilities, I just need to read up some more. The only thing that confuses me extremely so far is the store in game. I'm having a hard time finding items, and the correct items I guess.
I suggest you make a practice game and look closely at the shop, buy every item you don't know ( you can give yourself money in practice games).
Learn some important hotkey combos for speed shopping (very important in the earlygame so you miss minimal time in the lane), like b r d for a homecomingstone. Learn to use the courier.
In game shop is seperated into categories. Initiation (early game) defensive builds supportive (for supports) items that focus on damage. and the last are attack modifiers which just modify what occurs when you attack (you can only have one attack modifier, on bottom left of your screen, if you have multiple you can click to switch.
basically you buy the item in the shop, put it on the courier, send the courier to you, and then send the courier back
this allows you to stay in the lane 24/7 by shipping over regen and makes it so you don't have to walk back and forth to get your items
learn what each heroes role is in the game. then what items are best for them. there is a guide section at the upper right corner of the site. says "guides" and you can view them for each hero.
also every 7:30 minutes changes the time of day. in the day time the fog of war is smaller, at night the trees and such stretch it slightly larger, making it good for gankers.
start with supports and maybe mess with some gankers like valk, slither, ophelia, ect.

Skilling morp and toung tied + ulti.
Jester, skill stun and heal.
later on when you get better control. try using 1 in stun, max cursed ground and heal + ulti. U can use Ulti then use Asassins Shroud on voodo jester, then no one can target u, they can still stun in the are u are to stop ur channaling spell tho.
Otherwise, learn warding, map awareness, ganking.

I think im more accustomed to the ganker role, because that was what I mained in LoL, even though I have learned quickly that there is a very big difference between the two games. Just by playing a few public games you know, "Noobs only, AP" I've been able to pick up the general strategies. I'm just trying to find a hero right now that suits me well, I liked night hunter for his stealth and good burst/ability to semi-carry.
Can someone explain when I should be playing match making games or just public games? (In LoL all games were match made, unless they were custom games which usually meant they were joke games with no real competition) I'm hoping to be able to work hard and learn the champions and eventually get competitive, and join a team. Though, I can see thats probably going to take me a while.
Here they're called heroes. MatchMaking is where you go when you feel you know the game. Learn from my mistake and don't go try it just yet. If you get down to low MMR (Match Making Rating) you can be stuck with bad players who thing they're the best and only flame.
Now i have to pick dominating heroes (only after i've learned to play) to dominate my way back up to the starting MMR.
Night hunter? You mean night hound? Night hound is a hard carry i believe. You need lots of farm with him to be most effective. There are a lot of counters to stealth, so beware.
One other thing people here did not mention is that in HoN the sidelanes are imbalanced. You may notice the creepwaves meet closer to one of the towers.
The lanes are called easy/hard or short/long lane. Bottom for the Legion side is the easy lane.
In the Jungle the "monsters" don't regen their hp so fast when they stop attacking you. The Jungle spawns every minute at every camp if there are no units around.
This includes "monsters", wards (used to counter junglers and pulling). This means if you attack at x:53 seconds and run away, you can "stack" the camp with two mob spawns, because at the minute mark there are no units there. You should do this every time you jungle (beware if you jungle from star might not want to attack the stacked camp yet).
There are three types of camp: Easy, normal and ancient. They refer to easy and normal with colors but since I am colorblind can't help you there.
Easy camps are 1 on each side of the river. They spawn easier mobs to kill. Ancient camps are 1 on each side of the river. The ancients are very strong and can't be targeted by insta-kill monster spells or items.
Regarding pulling. At the x:15 mark or x:45 you can attack the camp closer to your tower and run straight to the lane (the easy/short one) and you're creepwave will attack them. If you stack first then do this. All of your creepwave should have died and thus denying all the EXP and gold your opponents would get for them. Also since the mobs attack your creeps you can try to last hit them without being concerned to get him by them.
As for global bounty there is Kongor in the big dot close to center. He drops an item (token of life) which is like guardian angel, but restores to full life and is used upon resurecting. Kong respawns 10 min after killing him. Token lasts 7 min before being "wasted".
Kongor can't be stacked, can't be attacked outside of his spawn (you miss auto-attacks) and he regens fast when no one is around.
3rd time and further times kong is killed in a game he drops an extra item (banannas) you can stack theem in inventory and regen a LOT of HP/MANA upon use, like a token if you time it well. Usually this doesn't happen in public games.
As for laning basic stuff is: the carry (or the one who needs the most) gets the last hits, every one tries to deny but support should focus. If they have a harder carry (better late game, worse early) you should be more agressive.
As for your role. If you're used to a ganker role you could play solo mid. You have to deny the most you can but also remember that creepkill >> deny. Ranged heroes get less EXP than melee with the deny from opponent.
In most games it's expected the mid hero to gank.
Ah, you have tablets in this game. They spawn every 2 minutes starting at 2 min mark. Thay are on the river on half way through the other lanes, randomly spawning at one spot (wards would be nice so mid can know where and what tabled spawned). Mid gets one buff with them and can effectively gank with them. A ganker hero is advised as well.

Anyone have a recommendation on good agility based gankers or semi-carries. I liked the playstyle of night hound* and swiftblade, though every time ive played them people have said to me that they are bad heros... which might just be mis-information from other noobs im playing with.
edit: after reading a guide on him, scout looks pretty cool too.
-He's one of the hardest carry heroes in the game (means it needs a lot of farm to be efective)
-Ppl QQ about scout because a lot of scout players just stay invis all the time and watch the game. Bad game as they should farm farm farm.
-You need to rush a runed cleaver to be efective in farming some more
-Not useful in teamfights early on as you can't afford long silences early on, neither can you show up because you're too squishy and also you can just sit there to silence because scout is farm farm farm
-Need a very on your face team so they can 4v5 while you sit a farm. He can't gank that well as he's not so good early on when you need the ganks to happen.
As a LoL player that you are scout would not fit your play style just because he needs to creepfarm very much and in LoL you don't have that kind of farm with minions you farm heroes. In HoN not so much, with some heroes you really need to sit back and farm while stuff is happening all over.
Scout NH and Swiftblade are considered "Noob carries" because they can be effectively countered with a small investment in gold and/or good hero picking. Fayde is a solid Agi ganker with some minor semicarry potential. Her invisibility skill is also one of the more useful ones, as she gains benefits other than invisibility when she activates it (treewalking, unitwalking, seeing through trees). Also try Nomad. He has powerful physical burst damage, good escape and initiation skills, an ultimate that can decimate a team fight if timed correctly and decent carry potential if he racks up some early hero kills with his charge attack.
