Tempest: Begginers guide to jungling portal key with VIDEO

Tempest Portal Key in 8 minutes tutorial

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmKevsvPeSI

    Errors In Video
    1. Walking away too soon from skeletons, lost xp
    2. Not targeting Catman champion boss with elementals (listen to my own advice I should )
    3. Forgetting to disrupt vulture lords tornado spell with glacial blast
    ---
Thanks for constructive comments. Although this is just meant to be a general walkthrough I should have doublechecked my work, I will be rerecording sometime soon, but in the meantime please know I am aware of these issues. Thanks!

This video was created to help newer players understand some of the basics of jungling, and how to farm a portal key for Tempest in an acceptable amount of time for none em game modes, although if you prefer EM games following this guide will get you portal key in less than 6 minutes. This video should be self explanatory, but if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask via a post in this thread or PM. In the video I am somewhat slower than I usual, namely due to a missed last hit and not pulling fast enough, but its possible to get portal key at 7:45 or so just by following this guide alone. Earlier if you successfully gank defensive lane.

Feel free to offer any suggestions on my video that can improve farming time e.g. different route, pull this camp first etc.

    skill build
    1.elementals
    2.glacial blast
    3.elementals
    4.glacial blast
    5.elementals
    6. vortex

    Starting Items
    x6
    x2

    or
    x2

At level 6 its a good idea to leave the jungle and gank your defensive lane, its usually free money and can shave off a minute or two from the amount of time required to get portal key.

You missed the xp from your first Skel King for no reason, and you take an unnecessary amount of damage from Cyclone.

Not a bad starting point though.

Nice video. I picked up a couple tricks that will help me jungle with temp (and other jungle heroes) much more effectively.

You need to be selective with creep pulls, don't do it as a rule, you might push your own lane more than you want to.

One thing I don't get regarding the video is why do you use your elementals skill on the catman soldiers instead of the champions. Saves a lot of time and lowers the risk of getting your elementals killed and yourself damaged.

Yes I should really listen to my own advice and target "boss creeps". Your absolutely right!

Thanks for all of the constructive comments so far everyone, I will likely upload a more polished version devoid of these small mistakes sometime this weekend.

I play Tempest differently to most people...

I think you're better off going

    -Glacial Blasts
    -Elementals
    -Glacial Blasts
    -Elementals
    -Glacial Blasts
    -Elemental Void
    -Glacial Blasts

At level 3 the double stun can easily take out weaker int heroes in conjuction with your ally. Once you're level 7 the triple stun is extremely powerful.

I tend to not bother with the port key until around 20:00 minutes anyway, as his base health is pretty low and needs bracelets.
    I have returned

Pretty good vid, you farmed that up pretty quickly.

I liked how the song really established the "race against time" feel you always get when trying to get blink ASAP.

However, it's normally better for whoever would have been soloing bot if you don't auto attack while pulling, and instead deny one or two creeps for them.

That was pretty cool, but I think it sets up a few bad precedents.

    - Ring of the Teacher is really unnecessary at first. It is good to get by level 5 or so, because it means you really don't need to level up your elementals to level 4; but, at the beginning of the game, you need that money for a courier at the start. I would recommend just getting a Scarab at first, and not finishing the Ring until a bit later.

    - You don't need a portal key that damn fast; you're not going to be using your ult immediately as you get it. In fact, if you're staying in the jungle that entire time, that means either your team is absolutely destroying your opponents, or that means that your adjacent lanes are getting beat down and you're not paying enough attention to them - and your entire team falling behind will probably not be saved by your ult.

You need to get a courier at the start and rush a Bottle and Wards (wards are pretty optional in -em, but this thread was about normal mode). A Bottle allows you to do more with your mana than just farm; now you can go to the side lanes and assist in ganks using your Glacial Blasts if necessary. Having a courier means that you can constantly keep refilling it and sending back for other items without having to go back. Wards keep you from getting ganked in the jungle early on.

So, instead of rushing a Portal Key (which sounds cool, but isn't that practical), I would do this:

    1. Items: Courier, Scarab, Mana Potion (optionally, you can wait at the base for 22 seconds - 11 in -em - after the creeps spawn and get a second Mana Potion before heading out).

    2. Skills: I like exactly what the OP said, but I think it warrants mentioning that you don't need to level up the Elementals past level 3 to farm efficiently. Max out Glacial Blasts at 7 and then focus on Meteor. I don't even bother getting the last level of Elementals until level 25...should the game even go on that long.

    3. What to get: Bottle, Wards, Guardian Ring, Portal Key.

My first goal is to get enough for a Bottle by the time I've used my two mana potions up. As soon as I have that, I'm pretty much ready to go and can stick in the jungle as long as I need to while assisting in ganks. Always use the Bottle up entirely when your courier brings it to you, then send it back with him immediately.

Wards are the next thing you should get (you can get them first, optionally, but I think you'll get them very quickly after getting a Bottle, which speeds up the farming process a ton). Be sure to place them in key entrances so you always know if an enemy has entered the jungle. If so, you can flee to a lane easily.

I finish up the Ring of the Teacher after this, because it helps with mana regen and gives my elementals armor. This makes it easier to keep your Elementals alive and allows you to skip leveling them to 4.

After I've taken care of all this, I then head to Portal Key. Doing all this, I can still get the Portal Key in about 13 minutes with no creep stacking or pulling whatsoever, and in the time it takes for my courier to bring it to me, I can get one more level. So, I have Glacial Blasts maxed out, as well as a level in Meteor and my Ult to make the most use of both.

The cons of this way? You don't get Portal Key in a whopping eight minutes.

The pros? You'll be harder to gank, you'll actually be useful BEFORE you get the Portal Key, you'll never have to go back if you mess up (unless you get your Courier killed), and you won't get the Portal Key so damn fast that it won't be useful for a while.

Unless there's a pressing need to leave the jungle after this, I suggest staying for a few minutes longer and grabbing a pair of Marchers before heading out.

you don't really play tempest differently. you just don't jungle. clearly, glacial blasts is a terrible first skill for jungling. it's somewhat surprising that this hadn't occurred to you, even though the thread is explicitly about jungling with tempest.

Well, the fact that blink is not only used for setting up Elemental Void (Hole), it allows you to gank so much more efficiently than any other item you could possibly get at 8 minutes, blinking in and stunning with auto attacks while a teammate follows up, allows you to avoid ganks with good use of blinks over hills. I don't see your reasoning behind a bottle making you harder to gank, as his mana problems are easily fixed with a Mana Tube (Voidstone) which basically allows you to freefarm jungle without having to send mana potions with a chicken. Bottle is pretty much worthless on Tempest because the fact that your mid should just be rune whoring the start of the game, making much more efficient use of the runes while a Mana Tube fixes his mana problems indefinitely without required crow trips, rune snagging or base trips. Tempest (Enigma) should not be buying wards as there are other heroes that do not completely require items that can wardslut (Pyromancer/Lina, Andromeda/VS, etc) to protect your jungle. The fact that Black Hole wins games and if you cannot position it well enough (No blink) or against a competent team, cannot cast it without being stunned (solved by a Shrunken Head [BKB] after blink), you are basically a couple summons, some aoe damage and a glacial blast every 15 seconds. Rushing Blink is much more beneficial and is of top priority as it allows you to gank very well, much more than your Marchers (Boots) will give you. ROTT (Basi) is really not needed at all because good use of around 8 mana potions or a chicken sending mana potions will fix your mana issues to farm your blink in 7-8 minutes. Overall, your build does not recognize that blink is not just for ulting, while it aids it greatly and slowing down getting it could possibly miss a good opportunity to get a large team kill. Imagine at 10 minutes, their team pushes roughly 4 heroes mid to take the tower. Obviously you are not going to be able to run in there, meteor and black hole without being stunned, silenced, disabled in any way, shape or form, or having their team simply just run. Bottle is not a farming item, it is for roamers and ganking, which a Mana tube gives plenty of regen to permanently farm jungle and to gank well enough. Blink offers an escape that tempest lacks, allows for initiation, and should overall be rushed compeltely. There is no reason to forgo it for boots or bottle or basi or any other useless crud that you really think is good. Bottle denies your allies that could most likely use the runes and the bottle charges much more effectively than you can, and in the end you are just delaying farming your blink. Tempest's ability to aid his team along with gank, escape and kill well is boosted highly by obtaining blink as fast as possible, which should be gotten as fast as possible, close to 7:30.

In before TL;DR, Wall of Text, etc.

I suppose it does allow you to gank efficiently, but so does coming out of the jungle with Glacial Blasts. The casting range for that is really good, and you really don't need Portal Key to make the best of it. What you need in order to gank efficiently is the ability to recover your mana really quickly, and Bottle does that. Portal Key doesn't - in fact, it makes any mana problems you have even worse, especially early game when you don't have much.

I don't see your reasoning behind a bottle making you harder to gank,
I didn't say that; I said that buying Wards make him harder to gank. You can get a Portal Key in eight minutes if no one bothers you (as shown in the video), but you can't expect that to happen.

...as his mana problems are easily fixed with a Mana Tube (Voidstone) which basically allows you to freefarm jungle without having to send mana potions with a chicken.
Void Stone not only costs more than a Bottle, but it doesn't give HP back. If you're conducting ganks, a Bottle is much, much more efficient; it gives you mana back much faster, and it costs less.

On the other hand, mana regeneration is much better for harassing in a lane, which you're not doing. Even if you were, what are you getting with Tempest that you need a Void Stone for? His most important items are Bottle (helps gank BEFORE you have to spend 2150 on a Portal Key), Portal Key (obvious), Post-Haste (get to a team fight ASAP), and Shrunken Head (mitigates the chance of being disabled during your Ult).

Void Stone is not a constituent of any of those items, it doesn't help him gank, and it's not a necessary constituent for any of his core items. That's a lot of money to be out so solve his mana problems when you could solve them for 600 - 600 gold that will also make him effective at ganking BEFORE you get a Portal Key.

Bottle is pretty much worthless on Tempest because the fact that your mid should just be rune whoring the start of the game, making much more efficient use of the runes while a Mana Tube fixes his mana problems indefinitely without required crow trips, rune snagging or base trips.
So what if youre mid is rune whoring? You have a courier. When your courier brings you the Bottle, use all three charges of it, and then send your Courier back to the fountain and immediately back to you. You get the courier so that it keeps you in the lane; you never have to go back for items OR healing purposes (Or Mana Potions; I never ever said to buy more Mana Potions) if you have the Bottle, and it makes you useful in early ganks.

Tempest (Enigma) should not be buying wards as there are other heroes that do not completely require items that can wardslut (Pyromancer/Lina, Andromeda/VS, etc) to protect your jungle.
If you're in the jungle, you oughtta buy wards. You're the one whose life is on the life. Besides, more than one person can buy wards...

In any case, I think your argument completely applies to Tempest as well, because he's VERY low maintenance. Once you have a Portal Key and some Marchers (not even any upgraded boots), you're pretty set to go; you should shoot higher than that, but there's no saying that there will be better heroes to buy wards (or that they'll buy them). If you want to be sure that your jungle will be warded, you better do it yourself.

The fact that Black Hole wins games and if you cannot position it well enough (No blink) or against a competent team, cannot cast it without being stunned (solved by a Shrunken Head [BKB] after blink), you are basically a couple summons, some aoe damage and a glacial blast every 15 seconds.
If you read my post more clearly, I never argued against any of this at all.

Rushing Blink is much more beneficial and is of top priority as it allows you to gank very well, much more than your Marchers (Boots) will give you.
I never said you should get Marchers instead of (or even before) a Portal Key.

ROTT (Basi) is really not needed at all because good use of around 8 mana potions or a chicken sending mana potions will fix your mana issues to farm your blink in 7-8 minutes.
So let me get this straight:

    1. You think spending 400 gold on Mana Potions, and potentially more than that, is a good idea; but, you think spending just 200 more on a Bottle which can be easily refilled without ever needing to go back or take a rune is a BAD idea?

    2. You think buying a Ring of Basilus, which gives your creeps armor (allowing you to focus level ups on other stuff) on top of mana regen is a bad idea, but you would suggest spending an additional 375 on a mana regeneration item that doesn't lead to any substantial items for him?

Overall, your build does not recognize that blink is not just for ulting, while it aids it greatly and slowing down getting it could possibly miss a good opportunity to get a large team kill.
A large team kill with something else besides my ult? Like what? You can only Glacial Blast every few seconds, as you said. So, if you're not blinking to use your ult for a team kill, what else are you using to kill multiple people as Tempest?

Imagine at 10 minutes, their team pushes roughly 4 heroes mid to take the tower. Obviously you are not going to be able to run in there, meteor and black hole without being stunned, silenced, disabled in any way, shape or form, or having their team simply just run.
You're right, I won't be able to meteor AND black hole...just Black Hole. Especially if they're pushing mid, it would be easy as pie to run in through the jungle because they'd be right next to it. Also, if you get a 4 hero push at ten minutes in, just lose the mid tower and take the top and bottom. Big deal! It's better than playing a strat which puts all your eggs in one basket and is completely ruined if you get ganked just once.

Bottle is not a farming item,
    I didn't say that.

it is for roamers and ganking,
Ganking! Exactly what I need it for. Bottle actually allows me to farm AND gank quite effectively - or are you saying that my experience in effectively farming and ganking with a Bottle is all a lie?

which a Mana tube gives plenty of regen to permanently farm jungle and to gank well enough.
This Void Stone argument is pretty null - it doesn't lead to any necessary items for Tempest, and if I can fulfill my needs with a CHEAPER ITEM - THE BOTTLE - why get the more expensive item?

Blink offers an escape that tempest lacks,
Sure it does...if you buy wards. If they've already attacked you, you won't be able to use it to escape, as you can't use the blink within three seconds of being attacked. Are you beginning to see why wards are so important?

    allows for initiation,
    I agree.

and should overall be rushed compeltely.
I disagree. Team fights do not happen that early in the game, and you're completely screwed if they start ganking you before hand. Also, you are completely useless for ganking until you get Portal Key UNLESS you get a way of replenishing your mana quickly (and don't say Void Stone - Bottle does the job and is much cheaper and faster while restoring HP in the process; it's ultimately better for ganks).

There is no reason to forgo it for boots or bottle or basi or any other useless crud that you really think is good.
    1. I never said forego it for boots. Please read what I said more carefully: I said that I would stay in the Jungle for a minute or two AFTER getting a Portal Key to get Marchers. AFTER. The Portal Key.

    2. Ring of Basilus means that you can start leveling up Meteor that much quicker, and

    3. A Bottle allows you to be useful early game. A Portal Key does too, but you really don't need it at eight minutes. Consider this: You have your Portal Key at eight minutes, but do you have full mana? Probably not, if you don't have RoB or a Bottle. So who cares if you have the Portal Key?

At level 9 - the level at which you get a Portal Key with my method - you barely have a bit over 500 mana. What does this mean? Think about it:

75 (Portal Key) + Lv1 Meteor (95) + 200 (Lv1 Ult) + 160 (Lv4 Blasts) = 530 Mana. You would barely have enough to do this at level 9. At the 7:30 mark, you're not even gonna have enough mana to take full advantage of using the Portal Key. It's an incredibly useful item, but it's just not useful if you get it as early as you can; you're a one-hit wonder who can't defend himself.

Let me put it to you in a different way: Let's pretend that at the very beginning of the game, you could have Tempest's ult, at any level you choose - lv1, lv2, or lv3. Which one do you take? Neither of them, of course; you barely have enough to use it one time at level 1, and then you'd be sitting around like a dope for three minutes. Do you see what I'm saying? Just because Portal Key RULES doesn't mean you need to get it as fast as possible - in fact, it could be to your detriment to get it faster while ignoring your other needs.

You don't have the mana to be using a blink - meteor - ult combo efficiently if you get Portal Key as fast as you can.

Bottle denies your allies that could most likely use the runes and the bottle charges much more effectively than you can,
For starters, I again never said to take the runes. You take the bottle from the courier, use all the charges, then give it back and have him run it to the fountain and back to you. It's no different from using Mana Potions...except for that it's better, because it's permanent, gives you 1/4 less mana in 1/10th of the time, recovers HP, and allows you to gank worth a damn before you have your ult.

You can go on about how that's a bad idea, but you suggested buying EIGHT mana potions at the start (i.e 2/3's of the Bottle's Cost), and potentially buying more (how many more? 2? 4?). That kind of money on consumables is enough to make your argument pretty hypocritical, espcially when my method does not take any time out of your farming to do, nor does it take runes away from whoever's mid.

and in the end you are just delaying farming your blink.
And for good reasons, which I've already mentioned!

Tempest's ability to aid his team along with gank, escape and kill well is boosted highly by obtaining blink as fast as possible, which should be gotten as fast as possible, close to 7:30.
On the contrary, I've explained why getting it as fast as possible does NOT help, and why my method does. But I dunno, you've misquoted me a lot (I never said anything about refilling a Bottle with runes, nor getting Marchers before Portal Key, and I CERTAINLY never said that getting a Bottle makes you harder to gank), so I'm curious just how thoroughly you read what I wrote. Please read it again if you want to continue this discussion.

I could only see one mistake in the vid, or something i would not do.. Though it might have changed in the patch i dunno. Why did you not use elemental spell on the Catman Champion? this will give you a faster farm an also at one moment you past the yellow pack at 6.54 i think and you did not pull them with you when moving towards the oranage pack close to the base? you had about 5-6 sec left on your elements when you where done with the pack and also it was a catman pack which is the easiest pack to take down since you can use elements on the stronger of the 2.

    Otherwise good guide
