Ok, so I think this guide is going to end up pretty long, so I decided to just post it in pieces when I have time to work on it. Feel free to post feedback, suggestions, and/or requests here.
Overview:
Model Importing

Overview
Getting Ready...
Step 0: Choosing a Model
Step 1: Getting the Files
Step 2: Importing the Model
Step 3: Fixing stuff (textures, bones, animations)
Step 4: Exporting the Model
Step 5: Fixing more stuff (materials, animations)
In this guide I will be explaining how to import models and textures from blizzard MPQ archives into HoN's K2 format. This (currently) includes the games Warcraft III, Starcraft 2, and World of Warcraft. 3D Models don't like being thrown around between different formats, so you will most likely run into some weird glitches which require even weirder workarounds to fix, and as such I don't expect this guide will be able to cover everything. So if you have any questions or you discover something useful that isn't in the guide please leave your questions or comments here.
Things you will need:
3DS Max 8 (not 2008)
M3 Plugins for 3DS Max (v1.8 doesn't seem to work with 3DS Max 8, so use 1.7b instead)
MPQ Archive Browser/Editor
S2's 3DS Max 8 K2 Model Exporter
BLP Laboratory (not needed for WoW)
WoW Model Viewer (use this one for WoW)
Things you will probably want:
An image editor. I personally use Paint.NET and GIMP. Both are free to download and use.
Normal map plug-in for GIMP is an easy way to generate normal map textures to add an extra layer of detail to a model.
Notepad++ is useful for editing the script/text files that HoN uses to define the properties of it's models and textures. It will give you XML syntax highlighting (if you set it up), as well as auto-tabbing and other useful coding stuff.

Step 2. Importing the Model
Step 3. Fixing stuff
Step 4: Exporting the Model
Step 5: Fixing more stuff

The crowd is anxiously biting their fingernails in anticipation for the final act!
Really appreciate stuff like this
nice, as soon as you finish the part about bones and such, i myself will begin doing models from wow. its actually the only reason ive kept it installed after quitting LOL!
edit: everytime i try to get myself up to where you are at on the tutorial, i can only get this far.
"import failed unknown property: "position" is undefined"
can you tell me where i should be looking to fix this?
this is exactly what im getting:
thanks.
Do you get that with every model or just with one? Looks like its a problem with the import script. Probably nothing that can be done about that aside from asking for help from the creator here. Maybe you can try using an earlier version of the script as well but its unlikely that will work.

Something to help BlacRyu to place in "Getting the Files" For wc3
"Step 1 Download an MPQ editor from this link http://www.zezula.net/en/mpq/download.html"
"Step 2 Use said MPQ editor to extract the files you want, make sure to extract both the model and the textures that work with the model."
Maybe, but S2's export script only works with 3DS Max 8 for now. I guess you can try importing using a newer version and then exporting using Max 8 if it will let you.
EDIT: Ok it looks like maybe the new scripts don't work with 3DS Max 8, so use v1.7b of the import scripts.

I hope you are done soon, I am waiting impatiently for the next part xD, good work so far though.![]()
ok now that ive got the scripts ryu linked me i can get my model inside 3dsmax, but now im lost at this part:
"Now click on bitmap at the top of the list that appears and then navigate to where you saved your textures in step 1 and pick whichever texture you think is a skin for your model. Your model should already be split into a few pieces and be ready to have the textures wrapped around it, so select the piece or pieces you think the material you made applies to and then click on the 'Assign material' button:"
I'm not seeing anywhere the word bitmap or any option for bitmap. (im not very adept with 3dsmax yet, sorry)
where is it under or what am i looking for exactly?
ok so far i got it all working. just need to start on the bones section.
i attached a weapon before exporting it from the wow model viewer, and i dont know how to get it to reappear in 3dsmax.
in the wow model viewer i loaded the sylvanas windrunner model, attached a bow, and exported the model.
any ideas as to why a weapon isnt showing up in 3dsmax?
