Defence of darkwood Vale Version 2!!! [a Open play-by-post RP]

Ok so I decided to try a repost of this in off topic, mostly because people actually visit this part of the forum rather then fan media.

    Original post is here: http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/sh...d.php?t=189526

Secondly there is no td;lr for this post. This post is not designed for the kind of person who needs a td;lr, no offence.

    Secondly:

I put on my robe and wizard hat.
I put on my robe and wizard hat.
I put on my robe and wizard hat.
I put on my robe and wizard hat.
I put on my robe and wizard hat.
I put on my robe and wizard hat.
I put on my robe and wizard hat.

Now we have that out of our systems we can continue as responsible adults with our guide on how this thread works.

    General RP ideas.

    Q1: What is a Open play-by-post RP?

Many of you will have faint recollections of RolePlaying having to do with nerds who spend far too much time in basements messing around with dice that have weird number of sides on them. A few of the older generation will have more.... kinky ideas of what RP means. This thread is neither, (Much to the disappointment of the latter group who just started to get all hot and bothered, take a cold shower guys!)
instead a play-by-post RP is more of a group writing session, where everyone pushes the story in the direction they want which creates all sorts of weird hi-jinks and unpredictable ideas.

Q2: Sounds interesting, how does it work?

Although there are plenty of different ways, the easiest is where each writer creates or takes control of one (or more if your really confident) characters and writes the story from their point/s of view (Not in 1st person, 3rd person).

Q3: So what exactly can I do in my posts? Are there any limitations?

Although the story is open, meaning anyone can change almost anything about everything, there are a few rules (boo!).

1: Don't abruptly change the main storyline. If everyone's on board for attacking a base or something, trying to force a fast change in the story (Lets say find a powerful relic) isn't going to go well.

2: Don't contradict the lore. Although this isn't that important for a HoN RP, the fact is a evil demon from the pits of hell isn't going to suddenly want to join the good guys and open a flower arranging store.

3: Keep it realistic. Yes I know what your thinking. This is a world of magic, where turtles talk and blacksmiths don't make weapons, but just spend all day saying "too bad it's me". How can you talk about realism? Well I'm not talking about realism but more about good story writing. No matter how awesome sauce you think your char is, in a real situation if he/she/it was against a army of 5000 he would get his ass handed to him. The same goes for 'finding' magical items that help people, getting a sword through the chest then just walking it off, and anything else that comes under that funny little thing called 'common sense'.

4: God mode. Kinda a expansion on the above. The general rule is you can't control other people's main chars without their permission, ever, unless it looks like the poster isn't coming back (A week is a good time to wait). None player characters (also known as NPC's) are free to control, kill, maim and sodomize, but at the same time keep the common sense rule. Don't have that NPC brilliant tactical general suddenly charge at the enemy naked.

    Q4: I'm in! How do I join?

Joining is simple. Write a opening post and have fun! Some of you may have some experience with this kind of thing before, and have seen requirements of filling out char sheets and assigning stats etc etc. If you REALLY want to, then you can, but just writing a starting post and joining in is generally enough. You aren't limited to the number of characters you control, but at the same time make sure you can handle what you create. Generally 1-2 characters are enough, and just create NPC's to fill other roles (NPC's lift the pressure off you, since others can also control them).

Q5: Anything else I should know about general RP?
Remember that there is no winning in this game. Even if your char end up becoming kind of Newerth, gets all the booty they ever need and ends up a god, you didn't win. The only goal in this game is to make a cool story.

    Talking out of character (AKA discussing the story outside of it) is done like the following;

((OOC: Hey dude want to do stuff))

    Don't overdue this.

Although I don't expect a Oxford standard of English, the general rule is if I feel like I've dropped a few IQ points after reading it, it isn't good.
    ------------------------------

    HoN specific Ideas.

Q1: Well I have this idea for a char who's the sister of Maliken and a half demon half predator half owl and i can....

No. Just no. In fact just to put this down right now. All of the main characters (The 70+ heros on the selection screen) are off limits. Also any characters that are related by blood to the above are also not allowed. That's not saying your char can't be important (A general or something) but they can't be some weird bastard child thing.

Q2: But if we can't play the heros in the game what's left....

Remember that heros in the game aren't going to be the only warriors in this land. There are going to be plenty of scouts called Timmy, witch slayers called Jim and owl things called bobby. You just can't be THE scout. Ofc because your creating a completely new character that means you can add change and remove abilities as your liking, and you're not limited in any way to what you
can do. Because the lore is so loosely defined you add new species and change the definition of old ones. You also don't need to stick to 4 abilities, just keep it within reason. The restriction is to get some creativity between people rather then just coping the game 100%

Q3: Ok sounds cool, what about items.

Again you have free reign here, create new relics and change how old ones works. However keep in mind a realistic approach to it. Not everyone is going to have a PK and you do have to carry all this stuff around with you.

Q4: What about resurrection and the like?

Resurrection doesn't exist, if your char dies he's dead unless there's a reason why he comes back. Fights aren't decided by hp bars and level, so you could intheory have a lowly warlock kill a unwounded character who was armed to the teeth.

Q5: Do you have a primer on the HoN story aside from the lore in the hero descriptions?

That's about everything. The next post will be the starter, and after that is up to you.

    Enjoy and have fun.

Normally the war ending would have been a time for rejoice, over two decades of fighting between man and beast had come to a end less then six months ago. Normally such a end to such a war would have meant the destruction of one side and the spoils of victory to the other. But this was no ordinary end, for the end of this war just marked the beginning of another. The demons both sides had once enslaved had turned against them, those they had summoned with sacrifices of flesh now looking to burn their world down. The story of what had happened quickly spread among both beast and human, the joining of the two forces against this new foe, the growth of the Sefir. But what wasn't told, was of the fate of the rest of the lands as the forces of Jeraziah and Ophelia protected the tree of life.

They came quickly, burning through everything in their path as they went, killing anything that remained in their way. The terrible might of the Hellbourne sweeping through Newerth. Even though there was peace among the two sides the war had waged on for so long that mistrust was still strong. Beast tribes and towns were each individually destroyed, the lack of communication and work between the 'allies' no match for the unified power that was the demons. That was, until those who attempted the defence of the Darkwood vale. This is their story.

It wasn't a large town, possibly several hundred people there, and had mostly been used as a strong defensive point during the war with the beasts. Now it was a sad relic of the glory and power it used to be, the defences now old and unused, nothing more then a token force left behind. Most of the towns like these were less concerned about defence and more about rebuilding what the twenty year conflict had taken. But at the same time it was home for these people, the place several generations had lived and gotten old. The day here began like any other, but the in the forests, the day began with a line of fire and death as the Hellbourne slowly marched onwards.

And just ahead of this destruction, a little owl called Ormarr ran. Blood matted in-between his light brown feathers, and the hole in his side suggesting why he was grounded. Fear perpetrated from the beast that was no more then twelve summers old, even though he'd lost sight of the demons a few hours ago, he couldn't be sure if they weren't still following.

'They're all dead, every last one of them.'

The demons, they came without warning, slaughtering and burning everything in their path. Getting out of there alive had been nothing more then luck for Ormarr. Although lucky wasn't the word that he'd use to describe it. Seeing his feathered family and friends torn apart wasn't the best way to instil a feeling of 'luck'

Slowly he stumbled out of the forest still bleeding, looking around him dazed it took him a moment to recognise where he was. The human settlement. He hadn't meant to come here. Years and years of war and mistrust couldn't just be removed, and with the way the guards seemed to react to his presence the feeling was mutual. Ormarr just wanted to leave, but maybe fate wouldn't allow that. He'd pushed his body to get this far, and couldn't get any further. The world span around him and he found himself staring face up at the sky. As the world darked to darken he could see two humans stood above him, swords pointed suspiciously in his direction. Although their leaders had decreed them allies, old habits die hard. Ormarr managed to squawk out 4 words to answer all his questions before completely losing consciousness.

    "The.. Hellbourne.... are.... coming."

Amidst the terror of the townfolk, no one had the courage to think for a second on an important aspect of the situation: Yes, "The... Hellbourne... are...coming..." but... WHY? Why would the daemons choose with such persistence to invade a town that was barely a shawdow of it's former glorious status as a defensive fortress on the continent?

The question was only asked by the young apprentice to the famed scholar, electrician: Tinker. Believed to be one of the brightest young mines in all of newerth, Tinker had always aspired to be like his childhood mentor, Dr. Schroeker, simply known as The Electrician, famous in newerth as the man responsible for inventing all of the modern equipment used during the beastwars. Tinker was just 7 years old, already the brightest Student of the Tekniks in all of Teknika, the hometown of both Tinker and Electrician. He was never noticed by the famous and oft-busy electrician, until a faithful day in which the Predator Beasts had decided to attack Teknika in retaliation of the town's scorned upon use of Newerth's resources to pollute the environment. During the attack, Tinker was cornered by a lone Predator who was hungry and ready to devour his body and soul. However, it was the perfect grip of the Electrician, with a followup of the townsmen who threw everything in sight at the predator that forced his retreat. After saving his life, Electrician turned to the young Tinker and asked him "Do you know what the odds were of you surviving that attack?" Tinker paused briefly to think, then replied just 2.9 second later "One in Three Hundred Thousdan Four Hundred and sixty Eight, Master". Electrician, obviously impressed, took the boy's hand and took him to his lab. Ever since then he has followed Electrician faithfully as his only apprentice.

15 Years Later, Tinker had just celebrated his 22nd birthday, the Year of Invention: this was the birthday considered by the citizens of Tinker to be the year that every scholar should present their "Life's Invention" to the Academy. Tinker's lifelong project was to be presented today: The Power Supply - an instrument capable of using the energies of other around oneself to charge one's own power. But with the happenings of the day, it was obvious that the presentation he had worked on all month would have to wait just a little longer.

While many in Darkwood Vale panicked, feared the evil that appraoched, the young Tinker was eager to understand what there was in Darkwood Vale that would push the hellbourne to come here with such a fearsome force. He decided to seek out the advice of his mentor, but he was nowhere to be found in their dark laboratory at the center of Darkwood Vale. Where could he have gone?

As he was about to leave the laboratory, he thought he heard a strange sound. It semed to be coming from behind the walls. It was unmistakably the voice of his master coming through the walls. It took just 49 seconds for Tinker to discover a switch that led to a secret passage behind the Electricians desk. As he quietly entered the passageway down into a dark room, only lit by the aura of his master's large tank of Liquid lightning at the far end of the room. Suspecting that his master would not be happy about him finding this secret lair, Tinker decided to remain hidden and rather listen to the conversation. At this moment, the words he heard made him freeze: almost as if gripped by the endless electric arm of his master.

"Yes, Master Maliken, i am certain of it, The Chronos is in Darkwood Vale!"

Malikens heart grew three sizes that day,he abandoned his work and went out to play. Young tinker, unaware, got in his way. "Maliken you bastard, i'll make you pay!". With a toss of his sword and a blink of an eye Maliken dissapeared without saying goodbye. Electrician, on the trail of his good master, stopped for a second to see the disaster. Electricians own son lay there stiff on the ground, his now severed head rolling round and round.
