Many thanks for the quality post Redpowervan and everyone else. If anyone else has any suggestions by all means share.
You don't counter Scout by playing solo, get your team together and go push or initiate a teamfight.
You posed the problem of laning with a teammate but your teammate leaving the lane for a period of time. Your option was to tower hug and forfeit exp/gold or risk death. Here are a few other options that might be more viable:
1) pull neutrals to the lane to prevent your wave from meeting theirs, this will push the enemy creeps to your tower(safe zone)
2) elemental one of your creeps and go jungle thus pushing their creep wave to your tower and being safe in that window of time. The scout will likely try to use this time to farm last hits since he has been spending his time harrasing you, he pushes the wave to your tower and you get exp/gold meanwhile. Also the creeps will let you know if hes at the wave so you know youre safe in the jungle for that small window of time
3) use the time to stack neutrals
4) Elemental your creeps, let temp hug tower and use elementals to last hit/deny earning gold but no exp
I think number 1 is the best idea and you can do it with any int hero, also if youre having trouble with neutral stacking or neutral pulling theres guides in the forum or you can message me, use practice mode if needed to learn how to jungle tempest
Its weird. As Int hero I have trouble against a lot of assassins but I never ever had a problem with a scout. Even if he gets a lot of kills he still feels useless and easily counterable. except his long range long cast time nuke he cant do anything in teamfights. IMHO scout fails if you play him like bounty hunter ...I prefer him taking a role similar to phantom lancer. You support your team with your nuke-slow, your scouting and mapcontrol and push unoccupied lanes.
what you can do:
- dont play -EM.
- early game, if youre laning against him, drop a ward of revelation on your lane, and he wont be harassing you, instead you can maybe net one or more kills on overconfident scouts. weaken him early and youre weakening him for the rest of the game.
- always carry a town portal scroll later on. If he opens with his ultimate on you, port to base immediately after his ult hit you.
- if youre looking for an item, get the cyclone stick, its a great item for cheap escape mechanism. When he catches you alone, cyclone him, and portal out.
- scout is lacking burst damage, he barely can slow and does not have any disable. This means you'll always have time and the possibility to react. try not to stay away too far from your team, so you could always run to your allys if he attacks you.
- There are several picks that make scout cry. Electrician, pestilence, blood hunter, succubus, etc.
Stacking neutrals occurs when you pull creeps at around xx:55 (neutrals spawn every minute so you want to pull them before the minute) and lead them away from the camp. If the neutrals are gone when the minute changes, the camp will spawn a new set of neutrals. Thus, when the neutrals you were pulling return to camp, you will find 2 sets of neutrals to kill. Esentially, neutral stacking makes killing neutrals more efficient.
It's odd to grasp at first, but it's like that in DotA so yeah, it's working as intended. It's an "exploit" that is universally accepted and used.
note: There's some pretty good anti-Scout advice here...remember that he's considered a bad hero for a reason (even though I <3 my Scout).
