Boo and i thought spellshards would be the saving grace of fayde...
n ive also managed to get spellshards lvl 1 codex, n i honestly dnt find any true differences.
Spellshards are for more aoe or multiple hit units, like Thunderbringer hits like a truck w/ his ult, makin double tb ults almost insta gibs
For me I build either Codex or Spellshards depending on my team and who I'm facing e.g. if I have an actively ganking/roamer team then I go Spellshards since it provides you with lower cooldowns and some nice mana regen. If you think you'll be solo killing, or need to insta-gib the enemy for heroes with escape mechs ie. Magebane then I would go Codex. Something which I think is best as well is if you're deciding on ever building a codex, it doesn't do good to only get 1 rank in it as that's a huge waste of 3k gold and an item slot, since the 1k upgrade each time adds extra intelligence, ranged distance and reduces the mana cost for activation.
1 year later, still doing the same build: Tablet -> Arcana -> Portal Key -> Hellflower/Spellshards -> whatever (Abyssal/Nullstone/Geometers/Frostburn/Puzzle/Harkon's/Genjuro).
Game should've ended at or before Hellflower/Spellshards, but if not then whatever. Portal Key stun to victory. and if you aren't getting Portal Key on Fayde you're a small son
My personal build:
Start: minor totems, hatchet, regen
Laning: Bottle, Psupply, Boots>Phase boots
Core: Codex, striders, Codex level 2, Post haste, Codex 3-5, Spellshards
Luxury: Kuldras, HF, Bound eye
Situational: HotBL, Vestments/Shamans, Null Stone, PK, Pbox
Depends on game. If it's breezing through Codex is still alright. But my current favorite is Ghosts, Bottle, Sac Stone, Stormspirit, Portal Key, Shrunken Head(if needed. I spoke against this item on Fayde before but it can be really invaluable in any match where your team can't follow-up the initiation 100%.)
Preston's Fayde is still the most boss I know though.
I play Fayde as support nowadays. Providing vision with my ultimate (being a scout) and buying items like hellflower, pushbook, stormspirit, puzzlebox, sheepstick
Every hero below has one or more new ability effects, Check them out:
I'm not sure why you even want spellshards on Fayde. If the enemy team starts getting magic armor/stacking HP you are not gonna be able to instagib people as the game progresses regardless if you have Spellshards or not. Codex is reasonable to solo kill squishies alone but after that there are many more useful items. Namely Hellflower, Sheepstick, Puzzlebox or even an Eye if you want to get rid of every ward on the map. Heck, even a Shieldbreaker does way more damage than getting spellshards and that's a really troll pickup. Not to mention Codex + Shards provides absolutely no survivability and those 2 items alone are likely to be your only purchases if you upgrade them.

Spellshards upgrades your AoE damage potential (Portal Key stun->Cull->Ulti), lowers all your cooldowns on your skills AND on your extra items (Portal Key, Hellflower, Sheep/Frostfield/Nullfire/Puzzle/whatever etc.) and lowers your ulti cooldown so you have even less downtime and late game can pretty much stay in ult form full-time (I think the downtime between ultimates assuming you have a maxed Spellshards is 4 seconds?). It also gives some mana regen early on and some attack speed to make your auto attack more usable.
Basically you grab Spellshards because it allows you to cut through magic armor, making your AOE damage potential higher, as well as lowering your cooldowns so you're more likely to get two rounds of your spells out in a team fight (and maybe even two Pkeys). It's the same reason why Magmus and Behemoth should get it. Portal Key stuns are a big deal and getting two or even three rounds of that in a team fight is very valuable, Spellshards increases the chances of you being able to do that by lowering cooldowns.
I wouldn't get it over Hellflower, but I'd definitely get it over something retarded like Shieldbreaker LOL. and I definitely prefer it over Codex pretty much always, again because Codex only hits one target and gets walled by magic armor, Spellshards doesn't. When Fayde is your most played hero somewhere down the line you'll realize Codex is stupid because it only hits one target, costs 5-7k to even make it practical and not a complete mana sink, gets walled by magic armor, and doesn't even give you any mana regen. The only reason to get Codex is the 'pew pew KS lols' from long range factor, which isn't needed with good play (Portal Key->Stun->Hellflower->slow->auto attacks, problem?)
tl;dr - You go Spellshards for the increased AoE damage factor and lowered skill/item cooldowns. The extra mana regen earlier on and attack speed are definitely positives as well.

I usually make level 5 codex and then other situational items, I've never gotten Spellshards on Fayde. It would be pretty useless imo.
