The reason you don't see this in Call of Duty or Starcraft is because in those games you are not dependent on every single member of your team to win, and it doesn't make a difference to you if you win or lose.

In HoN, one guy (russian) on your team can make you lose, make your stats look bad and make you angry because you work BLOODY HARD for those stats - people buy the game AGAIN to reset them or get a sub account to make their stats look better!

Really, the community will not and cannot improve if the foundation of the game is statistics of past games played. This is why LoL players don't have the same problem - cos nobody cares how good they are cos they suck and the game sucks. And CoD also sucks imo, but people still rage in that cos its a frustrating experience to die because the enemy spawned directly behind you. I digress...

This is why I prey they don't have stats for kills and deaths and wards placed and xp per minute and all the other stupid bullshit this game has (by the way im 1850 psr so this rant isn't cos Im a noob and can't get stats, its because I don't like what it does to the game) in Dota 2, cos if there are no stats in Dota 2 I will switch over without a second thought.
Valid points that I agree with for sure. It's unfortunate that the statistic aspect of gaming does this to people. That being said, I can think of instances where even the loss was an enjoyable game because people cooperated to the best of their ability and it was a close match. S2's matchmaking system is aimed at making the matches closely ranked (or moreso, at least) so I figure if everyone goes in with the same positive attitude we can't come out feeling bad from the outcome.

It's worth a shot, at least.

This is dumb, I love my HoN community and I don't want it to change because some scrubs who've never played DotA/LoL think HoN has the worst gaming community.
The fiddler from Chagalls village was inviting me to dance... so I danced.

Good post OP. I already try not to get angry with people in game, but I'll try a little harder.

P.S. It'd be nice to get the thumbs up symbol as an icon to show your support in-game (/just got the icon slot unlock)

I would love to wear that sig, but I'm just a trashtalker. I trashtalked since my first gaming days, not HoN. So I fitted perfectly in HoN.

Over the last days though I've tried not to trashtalk back. Specially my teammates, yesterday there was this Legionare that was mad at me cuz I didn't defend bot tower against 5 guys. He went alone and died. So he said: "I'm getting a codex and ima steal kills" I said: "K go ahead".

We were getting pawned and then Voodoo said: "We need wards" ofc Legi calls: "Wildsoul should buy the wards" Which I replied: "Ok, I can do that".

I bought wards the rest of the game while rocking a mock on bear and frostburn on wildsoul. Carried the game and Legi said not a thing the rest of the game.

I found that game pretty rewarding so I'll try not to trashtalk. At least not fight with my own teammates.

A cheap tactic that seems to be working for me is to type at the beggining:
"Lets be friendly, no blaming and no calling each other noobs and the like" sometimes you get a "why dont u stfu instead" but 75% it works.

Finally I think S2 should add that logo to the store.
Good thing about playing with friends: you will never get kicked when picking Night Hound as Orange or Brown.

I have been doing the same thing, except with the people on the other team. Just chatting with them. A lot of fun when you are mid and you chat with the other guy. I was a keeper vs a ss and it was a fun game.

Can't stand the heat? Get out of the kitchen.

I want my competitive games as harsh as possible. This is not a magical word of cuteness and love, whenever you die your helping the enemy team, whenever you fail, you're punishing your own team and wasting 45 minutes of their lives. This is not about learning and being nice, you can learn from your mistakes and from the flaming. As i said, if you don't like it or can't stand it get outta the kitchen.

I learned the hard way playing DotA since 2003, why wouldn't you? Also the flame and rage generated are hilarious, why would you want to finish that?

The only thing i can agree about stopping is the griefing. Even if the team is flaming you, it's probably for a reason and you shouldn't ruin the game, that's the easy way for puss*s also you can earn a ban that way.

Just my 2 cents. I can understand your point of view, but i don't share it.

The issue is S2 needs to put this thread as a sticky and into the opening message when you log into the game, because I am sure only like 1/10th of the community looks at the forums. Great thread signed.

i think the same applies to me in terms of DotA history with rage. i like rage a lot, tbh.

but more often then not, it does not contribute to teamwork. you have to realize that flaming a person just doesn't help them play better.

i've been in pro matches, where i've been raged at by real hard ass pros 1800+ before, and it's fine to an extent. i can handle the noise, because i work good under pressure.

but, at a certain point, it just gets annoying and counterproductive.

since realizing this, i've adopted a much more cooperative approach towards telling people on my team how they did something wrong and how to prevent it from happening again.

and you know what? the same goes for the real world. flaming and raging at people who are on your team in the business world or in any family setting just doesn't work out.

when it's playful it is fine; between friends? ok. but when you are playing with a complete stranger, you need to show common decency to them as a fellow stranger playing the game with you online.

since adopting a re-conciliatory attitude to team communication and bad errors on the part of my team (Bad karma, btw, is a fine example of someone who shits on the other team with his psyche-outs but always helps the noobs on his team with nice talk), i have been winning more games than beforehand.

shitting on your teammates is not the answer, people. this thread, this sig, and these ideas should be a testament to that fact and a reminder for you to always approach your games with a positive attitude towards team cooperation.

you WILL get better game-play out of your teammates this way - it's been proven in the real world, and you can prove it for yourself here in-game.
