mid game feels like wasting time

After the laning phase it's hard for me to get CKs. I usually don't play carry so if I head towards the jungle, chances are that one of the carry teammates is farming it/stacking it. I watch a lot of tournament matches but I just don't understand how they keep getting gold and exp after laning phase. Some of them just wander around from lvl 1 looking for early ganks. Tournament matches in general seem to be a lot more active than pub games. There will be a lot of team fights and some of them seem to rely on winning those team fights for exp and gold during mid game. In a lot of pub games it just seems like mid game is a lot of waiting around where I get gold very slowly and don't know where to go.

All I know are 2 things:
If I farm a lane by myself I will get ganked or I will have to wait for enemy creeps to get closer to my tower, wasting time. Or I have to buy lots of warps to warp from tower to tower which doesn't seem cost effective at all

If I go into the jungle for farm I will probably be wasting my health and probably a couple health potions and someone on my team will probably yell at me for stealing their jungle stacks.

Warding will help your team to farm up safely. Always carry a tp, watch the minimap and if you're warding a bit more aggressive, you should be able to gank a few heroes and gtfo then.

Static farm lanes that are pushed. (dont auto attack, only last hit/deny).
Do some creepcamps in the jungle.
Always carry a TP to be in the mid of teamfights when needed.
Dont get caught way out of position..

In HoN, attacking structures during the absence of creeps is not backdooring.
If someone is utilizing guerrilla style tactics on your structures, it is an acceptable strategy.

it sounds like you're running into a problem with vision. vision allows you to safely farm, effectively gank, and keep tabs on enemy heroes, which is incredibly important.

also, auto attacking at ANY point of the game, pushes creeps away from your tower into gankable territory.

if you havn't heard of it, static farming is one of the easiest ways to stay safe and farm consistently.
basically, wait for a ballista or catapult, and both CK and DENY every single creep that is fighting.
On cks make sure it's ONLY the last hit, but on denies, auto attack as soon as your able to. Make sure that their cata/balista stays alive (although yours alive isn't a ness)
with this, as long as your team mates are doing something you can stand in one spot and farm as long as you want.

I never autoattack but just last hitting usually pushes the creeps back within a few minutes if the other team is allowing you to free farm a lane. Eventually they will come up and kill me even if I'm next to my tower especially in the long lane. I understand that I need to have map awareness but sometimes it doesn't seem that possible when there's only 2 wards available at a time. They easily figure that there must be a ward on the jungle entrance in the first team fight etc.

Anyways I'll try to take more of your advice but mid game still feels rather slow.

Watch some high tier replay matches (not on honcast, but feel free to get the ID from honcast). Download it in game and watch one player the whole game and see what he does in the mid game. Remember it and copy it into your games.
Oh, and don't die, don't take any types of unnecessary risks. Dying will set you back a lot. Don't die.

If you have to, go to the short lane for your side and pull the neutrals. I'm pretty sure normally a carry player won't mind if you ask for 1 camp of neutrals. If they havent stacked it, you can either pull it anyway or stack it yourself. Just note that if you dont pull stacked neutrals then the next wave comes up whilst the current one is not taken out, resulting in your creeps pushing all the way to their tower.
