Magebane
A keeper of lost lore and a priest to forgotten gods, Magebane invokes unholy rituals to drain the energy of his enemies and turn it back against them. In less desperate times, heretics such as Magebane would have been burned at the stake, but this is not the first unexpected clemency brought about by the war against the Hellbourne.

Introduction
Magebane is a ganker and a semi-hard-carry, he got the fastest attack speed in the game. Your role is to farm early game, gank/farm mid game, and carry late game. If you do it right you will have higher farm than most carry because of your attack animation and your blink.
I'm making this a ganker Magebane, there is no place for a carry in HoN right now. Don't say "I played a carry and farmed all game and win". Ask yourself if your team is winning 4vs5 if it's then you are not needed anyways, so continue farming till the game ends. If you are playing 4vs5 and your team is losing, there is a lot of chance that it will be a snow ball effect, they will gank you and shut you down, or you can't even get enough DPS to kill them fast enough.
Team Role
Ganker, Carry and take out Int heroes.

Skill Descriptions
Mana Combustion
On each attack, Magebane drains some of the target's Mana. The drained Mana combusts, dealing additional damage back to the target.
This skill increases your damage by 9.6 / 19.2 / 28.8 / 38.4 if the target have enough Mana.Action > Passive
Required Level: 1 / 3 / 5 / 7
On Attack
Takes 16 / 32 / 48 / 64 of the targets Mana and deals Physical damage equal to 60% of the Mana taken.
This ability contains an exclusive modifier of type Mana Combustion. Exclusive modifiers do not stack. You will automatically use your most powerful exclusive modifier of this type.
This skill is what makes you so powerful early game, it also scale well in to late game because of your attack speed.
Flash
In a flash of light, Magebane is able to teleport a short distance to a target location and buffs his allies resistance to magic in the process.
Screenshot Skill Range:Action > Target Position
Range: 1,000 / 1,075 / 1,150 / 1,150
Cast Time: 0.7 Seconds
Mana Cost: 60
Cooldown: 12.0 / 10.0 / 8.0 / 6.0 Seconds
Required Level: 1 / 3 / 5 / 7
Activation
Teleport self to target position. Applies Flash Armor to self for 10 seconds and allies within 500 units of target position for 7 seconds.
Flash Armor (Self)
Armor: 3 / 6 / 10 / 15
Flash Armor
Armor: 2 / 3 / 4 / 5
This skill gives you the ability to farm without a Runed Axe, to avoid ganks and gives you’re the perfect positioning for you. After you got a Shrunken Head you can blink into an ally to give him bonus armor and then proceed to use Geo then SH to kill the enemy(with my build you "do" have enough movement speed to catch the enemy without blink).
Master of the Mantra
Magebane proves he is the master of the flow of Magic around him, limiting the speed enemies can control it while damaging them if they cast.
Screenshot Skill RangeAction > No Target
Cooldown: 1.0 Seconds
Required Level: 1 / 3 / 5 / 7
Apply Aura
-15/-20/-25/-30 Cast Speed
Damaged for 35%/50%/65%/80% as Magic Damage of the Mana used to cast the Skill/Item only count the internal spell cast if it's an activation spell.
Activation
On use, turns off the aura
After you or your teammates have items/skills that can mini-stun or stun. This skill becomes really good. It gives you more time to cancel the enemy skill. Early game this will really damage anyone who uses skill on you. When you max this skill, lets say Pyromancer uses him two combo on you, that's (140 + 125) x 80% which is 212 damage. Not adding he's going to miss the stun because the -cast speed. And there's no cool down on this skill. The cool down is only for the turning on and off the skill.
Mana Rift
Magebane tears a rift in a target unit's mind, stunning it briefly. He then detonates the rift, dealing damage in an area around the target based on how much Mana the target has missing. The more Mana the target is missing, the higher the damage dealt.
Screenshot Skill RangeAction > Target Entity Type > Enemy Units
Type: SuperiorMagic
Range: 600
Radius: 325
Cast Time: 1.0 Seconds
Mana Cost: 125 / 200 / 275
Cooldown: 120.0 / 100.0 / 80.0 Seconds
Required Level: 6 / 11 / 16
Activation
Damages enemy units in radius around target for 0.6 / 0.85 / 1.10 Magic damage per point of mana that the primary target is missing. Stuns the primary target for 0.1 / 0.2 / 0.3 seconds.
Early game, this is what makes you get a kill at level 6-7. If the target is low on mana, blink in attack him 2-3 times. Mana Rift. Your 64-damage combustion is a lot early game and does not need that many attack. Don't be afraid to use this skill mini-stun to cancel Homecoming Stone or any dangerous abilities.

Getting Flash at level 1 is no brainier because it allows you to avoid early gank. Master of the Mantra at level 2, I found my self getting this skill at level 2 because the enemy will also be damage by it when they use a skill and allow you to avoid pyro stun for example (sometimes I can't blink that fast). Mana Combustion is not used in early level, you won't be attacking your enemy that soon but it allows you to last hit the ranged creep better.
Starting Items
or
or 2x
The shield will be use to make HotL and Hatchet combine with your attack animation will net you most last hit. You won't be needing Runes that much for a Health Potion is an alternative.
Core Items
Get
before
You should get it in this order, if your farm is not going well then get a Lifetube and finish your boots before HotL. Set your boot to Strength until you get your HotL. Get Firebrand before Icebrand, you need attack speed at this point. For your HP HotL already covers it.
Helm of the Legion
This item is a core on Magebane, it offer an fix to his weakest point. After you get this item it will help you get other items because you won't die. If you survive one combo of the enemy you will be able to Flash away. Also sometime you need to initiate a fight, you will have to last 6 seconds to Flash to a new position (you should never do this in any case.)Passive
70% chance to block 40 damage
6 Health Regeneration
300 Max Health
Frostburn
This item offer you 26 damage total, 20 attack speed, 16 agility, 16 strength and this is very importance 14% movement speed increase and a slow to chase enemy. All of this cost you 4400 gold.Passive
+16 Strength
+16 Agility
+20 Attack Speed
+10 Damage
+14% Move Speed
On Attack
Applies 5% Move Speed slow for 3.5 seconds, can stack up to 3 times for 15% slow. This is an Attack Modifier.
versus
Brutalizer, It's a good item now, but situational.(NO MORE <> read item that you should never get on any hero. The only time you should get this is for CC.)
For 1100 it offers you a stun which does through magic immune unit.Passive
+6 Strength
+30 Damage
On Attack
25% chance for Melee Heroes to deal 25 Physical damage to target and stun for 1.4 seconds.
Abyssal Skull
Your teammates should get this, but in pub no one will get it for you. Even in competitive if your teammates dies you are left with no Lifesteal. In my opinion I feel like Lifesteal is a must on Magebane, he doesn't have the greatest HP but he doesn't die in a nuke or auto-attack, so the Lifesteal really help him.Passive
Applies an aura to all nearby allies. LifeSteal only works on melee units.
Since this item's Life Steal properties are applied via an aura, it does not count as an exclusive attack modifier.
Aura Effects
Radius: 900
15% Base Damage
15% Life Steal
Optional Items
Iron Shield
Improve survivability and last hit.Passive
6 Agility
Gives a 100% chance to block 20 Damage when attacked by a Hero if wielder is a Melee Hero. Only 10 damage is blocked for Ranged Heroes.
The chance to block damage is 60% when attacked by non-hero targets.
If you get harassed to much get this, but you should always aim for HotL as it scale with your health much better.
Situational Items
Shrunken Head - Not that situational, should always get it after the core.
You should always get this even the other team does not have that many nukers. It's a standard item on all carries even predator. Skip this if you are owning (I mean you are not dying).Passive
+24 Damage
+10 Strength
On use
Applies Magic Immunity to self for 10 seconds. Reduces by 1 seconds each time the item is used, minimum for 5 seconds duration.
Null Stone - Very situational
Why did I say it's very situational? Because you should never be in a fight when it starts. You should be staying back for like 1-2 seconds before Flashing in. You have to Flash in. Don't walk in and save the Flash for blinking out. That +Magic Armor really help you and your teammates.Passive
+15 Intelligence
+15 Strength
+15 Agility
+10 Damage
+6 Health Regeneration
+200% Mana Regeneration
When not on cool down, negates a single targeted spell. If on cool down remove 5 seconds from the cool down when an enemy cast a spell on you.
In any case, if they are keeping the nuke just for you then get this.
Runed Axe - So many people are against this in avoid section, which I agreed but I didn't have time to edit. So it's here now.
It's mostly for farming and doing damage in a group, Magebane already have that superior farming ability, Flash. You are a part-time ganker, this item will delay your ganking ability(Which we don't want in the current meta-game).Passive
+65 Damage
+6 Health Regeneration
150% Mana regeneration
Gives
40% Splash damage in a 225 unit radius.
If you are the only carry in your team or you can farm this before 20 minutes mark them it's good to get it. As it's a investment.
Brutalizer - Get this if your team doesn't have a disable or against a shurunken head team(predator).
The change is makes it very good now. So it's optional. You should get this if your team doesn't have a disable or it's well late into game and your enemy carry got a shurunken head. It's one of the best counter carry item for a melee hero that a carry can buy at the moment(hex doesn't offer every hero the choice to buy it)Passive
+6 Strength
+30 Damage
On Attack
25% chance for Melee Heroes to deal 25 Physical damage to target and stun for 1.4 seconds.
Luxury Items
Symbol of Rage
This is one of the most underrated items in the game I think. The step is easy. Hit the target, if he decides to attack you and fight. Turn on the attack modifier to Lifesteal and activate its ability. Its like a Banana from Kongor. Keep the Lifesteal if he still fights you. If he runs then turn your current the Attack Modifier to Frostburn for chasing. This item also gives you more survivability with a little damage (Remember this, little damage for Magebane goes a long way).Passive
+25 Strength
+20 Damage
+5 Armor
25% Lifesteal
On use
Applies Symbolic Rage to self for 3.5 seconds.
Symbolic Rage Effects
150% Lifesteal
Riftshards
Boost your DPS better than Savage Mace.Passive
+45/55/65/75 Damage
On Attack
10/13/16/20% chance for 1.8/2/2.2/2.4x Critical Strike
versus
Savage Mace
Get this if your enemy got evasion or going for a Wingbow.Passive
+88 Damage
+15 Attack Speed
True Strike
On Attack
35% chance to do 100 Physical damage and stun for 0.1 second.
Get any one first, to your needs. Dying fast/can't chase get Frostwolf's Skull. Need DPS, burn mana fast or dying fast from single target spell? Get Geometer's Bane.
Geometer's Bane
This help with your survivability a lot. Increase you attack speed and Mana Combustion x3! This damage won't get reduce! You should get a Shrunken Head first as it will dispel your +Magic Armor.Passive
+10 Intelligence
+10 Strength
+26 Agility
+15 Attack Speed
+10% Movement Speed
On use
Spawn 2 Illusions of self. The illusions take 3.5 times normal damage, deal 33% of your attack damage, and inherit properties from you. The Illusions have a 20 second lifetime. Dispels all Buffs and Debuffs on use.
and
Frostwolf's Skull
So we are left with the IceBrand, this increases your slow by a lot. Also improve your HP.Passive
+25 Intelligence

+200 Max Health
+150 Max Mana
On Attack
Applies Freeze to target for 3 seconds when attacking or casting a single target spell.

Wingbow
Getting rape by others carry without Savage Mace? Get his. Other factors are not that important for Magebane.Passive
+ 30 Agility
+ 30 Attack Speed

What do you really need from this?Passive
17% Lifesteal

Gameplay
Early Game/Laning
You are playing as a ganker/carry. Therefor you have no part in early game. Just farm but don't be afraid to go for a kill if someone is coming for a gank. If you follow my item list you will be able to take harassment and be very hard to kill early game.
There are lots of ways to get easy creep kill.
Creep Pulling, this is where you get your babysitter to pull the creep camp to you lane creep.
Getting creep aggro. Stand next to the lane creep, press attack on the enemy hero and quickly run back. This will swap the position of the creep lane making it easier to last hit.
If you are going to get the kill. Try to estimate where your target enemy is trying to run to and blink in front of him, but do not attack him just yet. Keep blocking him and wait for your teammates to stun again or let him keep auto-attacking. You are allowed to kill steal him so take the last hit on him.
By the time you got HotL you can be more aggressive as you will have more HP than most other heroes at this point. Very aggressive, tower driving is allow but save the Flash in this case for escaping. HotL really helps.
Use the Flash to skip tower, run into the tower let the first missile come to you before it hits you Flash. You should be able to skip a tower and chase the enemy if he decide to run home.
Mid Game
You should get at least Frostburn by now, this allow you to chase/kill very easily with a help of a teammates. This is when you start to gank more aggressively. Remember you should go in after your teammates, even with that HotL you are still a Glass Cannon. Flash to the back of an intelligent hero. Then attack him, don't use you ultimate yet if his Mana is very low and he can't use any skill, keep him alive. Keep attacking him he will at one point run to his teammates for help, use your ultimate on him. Process to attack the enemy if you still have enough health, if not your 6-second should be up by then, Flash out.
Remember to always farm, you are not a dedicated ganker, you will become a carry at some point. When your team does not need you don't go off finding enemy to kill, just farm. You need that Lifesteal as soon as possible.
Late Game
Lots of people see him as someone who’s ability late game decreases, but the truth is he will get better. He can attack faster than all other carries. His stat gain is not that awful, some what awesome. If he can't fight, that carry won't be able to kill you also. Except Chronos and his imbalance ultimate or TDL silence. I consider Magebane as a hard carry because of his attack speed.
Your job is like most carry; take out the intelligent fast as possible. Then deal with the carry after that.
Flash
I will add more soon.....
Flash is not like Chronos Timeleap, the enemy won't have a clue which direction Magebane is going if they are not looking closing(and no one will look at closely). Still it's a good idea to Flash to higher unreachable ground.
Lane Partners
Anyone who can babysit you. (adding)
Enemy
Fyade
Don't get Mana Combustion at the beginning if you are laning against her. Calculate the Mana you will lose and Flash. Make sure that you always be able to Flash once! So Mana Combustion at level 1 is good, and just save the Points don't use it. In late game you will be able to kill her easily.
Puppet Master
Both of his disable stop you from blinking, he's ultimate will not get disjoin when you blink.
Intelligence hero that can nuke, you heard it right! Before you use Flash you are just a Glass Cannon that can only defend against auto-attack (if you use my build)(adding)
Hero that can Hex/Stun you like Witch Slayer, okay Hex/Stun is an counter to every hero.
Hero with silence like TDL, Bubbles, Defiler will stop him from blink and for someone that is so soft like Magebane it won't be good.
Replay
I decide to use all of my replays, am not that good. Am a new 1600+ player. Don't expect much from me. My reaction time is a bit slow(and lag with my ISP). Just watch am not going to tell you what happen and what not.
I can't be making more replays right now, my ISP is look bad with HoN at the moment. The lag took me from 1600+ to 1450+ I might not play for a while.

You could add a picture showing the range of the aura, like spawn a bunch of pyros and move them into a circle right on the edge of the aura (watch the debuff icon to find the edge of it).
Frostburn stacks only up to 3 times.
Frostwolf skull, runed axe, geo bane and symbol of rage's item build ups look a bit dodgy, you should use a list inside of a list with them like you have for frostburn.

I dont really know about your opinion on runed axe.
I cant really see why it shouldnt be core, as magebane do have hardcarry potential, and he benefits from every aspect of runed axe to boost his farm.
He needs the manareg if he want to flash-farm, and the splash multiplies your farm-rate by 2, and allows to hit the jungle around level 9. The lifetube part is extremely good for lanephase, and also the 65+ damage is not something to take lightly.
I hardly play magebane myself, so am in no position to say you are wrong, but i simply cant see why not?

The problem with going the runed axe build is that you are entierly useless for 30+ minutes.
20 ish to get runed axe then another 10 to get the next time.
While it will make you farm faster and thus carry better, you can't expect your team to do well 4v5 for 30 minutes.

But thats what all hardcarries do, and actually id say magebane like a few other hardcarries actually can help his team to a certain extent with the runed axe build cause of his mana combustion.

Magebane has near the lowest str and str gain, if you rush a runed axe and try to fight you will be unlikely to have over 1k hp.
Other hard carries can help.
can own with just the runed axe
:chro: has his ult, well place one is game breaking.
can farm all game and ult into a fight at any time then go right back to farming.

Good statements indeed ;o But that means that magebanes objective on his team is NOT hard carry? but more a semicarry-carry that wrecks enemy heroes mid game, kinda like night hound?
Have never really seen a magebane in 1750/1800 games so tbh im pretty lost on this hero. :P

Well should he get farmed enough he is a hard carry since he has the lowest BAT in the game and good agility gain, his problem is the lack of health. Vida could probably add into the guide that magebane has BAT of 1.45, every other hero has 1.7

Magebane can be come a hard carry without the need of RA, stop making assumption that all hard-carry needs RA. Magebane as I listed has Flash, this makes you farm as fast or even faster than a Scout or TDL with a RA. Having Flash means that you are almost ungankable and you can blink between creep camps.
And no Scout does not need RA to be good, a rushed Hakon's Blade follow by riftshards ends the game.
Before saying anything, Riftshards is very good as building scout this way gets you 4 hits only, and you must run.
He does not get played in higher level because there are much better alternative like Chronos and TDL. Both of there ulti are very game breaking.
