Recently I've found that there is little reason to pick a melee hero since a lot of the games outcome can be based around the laning phase.
Also, a lot of strategies have been focusing on pushing lately, and pretty much all pushing heroes are ranged heroes. (defiler, engi, slither, torturer, ophelia, wog, hellbringer, did I forget anyone?) so these heroes are so popular right now that it makes it even harder to survive as a melee hero. (Not including Balphagore who I think is also a pushing hero, but the first melee?)
In a lot of competitive matches I've seen lately you only see about 1 melee hero per team, and I've seen [5] go 5 range heroes in more than one instance.
The point I'm making is that are range heroes too dominant right now in the meta game? Where is the incentive to go melee and just be extremely frustrated in a laning phase where you're up against heroes like Pyromancer and Slither? (just an example) Would you want to lane against that as Pestilence?
just some food for though, this has been bothering me for a while. Would like to hear others opinions on the topic.
Melee heroes sacrifice lane control (usually) for better stats and abilities. For a lot of melee heroes, you can pick up an iron shield and have a much easier time.
I don't think ranged being dominant over melee is a big issue, though. It's not like you're talking about one or two gamebreaking heroes that need to be fixed for game balance. It's a trend in the current meta-game and I really have no issue with it.
The biggest reason for this is the creep AI. Melee heroes are almost completely useless mid since they're going to eat 3 auto attacks for every cs they want to get.

TROLL ALERT WOO WOO
There's been many different points for both sides on this issue. There's rarely a situation where you have 3 mid - a ranged is pretty much required for a dual lane set up, and melee solo mids have fallen out of favor. This means the maximum amount of melee you have is 2. Add in the pushing metagame and very few strong melee pushers, and you get the ranged dominance.
If we see melee carry centric meta or have a melee solo mid return to form then we will see a shift, but I don't think there will ever be complete balance of picks between melee and ranged.
Also, some good melee laners would be nice (COUGH COUGH KUNKKA COUGH).
