    HoN_ModMan (Pick one!)
    • [Download] HoN Modification Manager (SHiRKiT) (ModManager written in Java, working in every OS) (Requires Java 6.22 or higher) (Troubleshooting)
      1. Q. Can't find the "mods" folder in my HoN dir! Did everything I knew and it doesn't show up!
        • This Manager doesn't create a "mods" folder for you. This is because you can put your mods folder ANYWHERE you want, and you just need to point it in the Options menu.
        • If you still doesn't know what to do, just go to your HoN folder, then enter "game" and then create a folder called "mods" there.
          • Windows: C:\Program Files\Heroes of Newerth\game\mods
          • Linux: /~/Heroes of Newerth/game/mods
          • Mac: /~/Library/Application Support/Heroes of Newerth/game/mods
        • ~ means User Home folder
      2. Q. My Manager doesn't start, or doesn't load the mods correctly.

        1. Be sure to have the latest Java version installed.
        2. Delete the "managerOptions.xml" which is located in the same folder as the Manager.
        3. Still not working? Please report the bug
      3. Q. Error Message: "resources999.s2z can't be accessed" or "HoN executable not found".
        1. Run the ModManager with admin privileges (Windows).
          • Solution 1 (recommended)
          • Solution 2 (not recommended)
            • Navigate to: Program Files\Java\jre\bin
            • Right click on java.exe and javaw.exe
            • Properties -> Compatibilty -> Check "run with admin rights"
            • PS: If you are under 64 bits, check apply this for both Program Files folder.
            • PS2: If you have JDK, do the same for all JDK versions you have.
          • Solution 3 (do this everytime you launch Manager)
            • Goto Start Menu
            • Type: cmd.exe
            • Right click
            • Run with administrator rights
            • Navigate to the folder where the Manager.jar is (for example cd "c:\games\hon")
            • Type "java -jar Manager.jar" (or another name, if you renamed the file)
        2. Close HoN and other programs before you run the ModManager.
      4. Q. I'm under Mac, but the Manager says that I need to update Java, but it's already updated!
      5. Q. On Windows, when I double click Manager.jar, it opens my Zip browser (7-Zip, Winrar, Winace, Winzip etc.)
        One program has "stolen" the .jar file association with Java. Simply download this file (check the author's website for more information) and run it AS ADMINISTRATOR to solve your problems!
      6. Q. I'm under Linux, but the GUI/Interface window (buttons, fields etc) looks a bit wrong, and/or the Manager crashes and/or does some crazy actions.
        Are you using OpenJDK? If not, pleasew report a but. But if you are, ok it's cool, it's Open Source, but it doesn't works well with Swing components and some other Java programs. You can try one of these alternatives:
        • Solution 1 - Add the alternative Oracle's JRE/JDK and have both running in your OS.
          • Code:
            sudo update-alternatives --config java

        • Solution 2 - Manually add Oracle's JRE/JDK and have both running in your OS.
          • Ubuntu 9/10
            • Now, add Java server

    HoN-Mod FAQ
    The HoNModman automatically copies all *.honmods into "Heroes of Newerth\game\mods"
    • Java ModMan (Manager.jar)
      1. Save the Manger.jar and all *.honmod files anywhere on your computer (You'll want to keep them, so use another partition NOT the HoN folder!)
      2. Open the Manager.jar (double-click). Go to "Options", "Preferences" and check if you set your HoN path correctly.
      3. Mark all .honmod files in your explorer and use drag & drop to get them into the ModManager. Now let go of the mouse.
      4. Enable ever mod (checkbox) and "Apply Mods" (bottom left corner).
      5. "All enabled mods were successfully applied" should pop up.
      6. Start HoN and go into the options. Customize your mod settings in the tab "Mods".


    • Notausgang's ModMan (HoN_ModMan.exe)
      1. Save the HoN_ModMan.exe and all *.honmod files anywhere on your computer (You'll want to keep them, so use another partition NOT the HoN folder!)
      2. Open the HoN_ModMan.exe. Go to "Options", "Change HoN Path" and check if you set your HoN path correctly.
      3. Mark all .honmod files in your explorer and use drag & drop to get them into the ModManager window. Now let go of the mouse.
      4. Mark all mods in the HoN ModMan, right click and "enable" them.
      5. Click on "File" and "Apply Mods".
      6. "Great Success!" should pop up.
      7. Start HoN and go into the options. Customize your mod settings in the tab "Mods".
    General FAQ: Read before Posting!
    • Pull-Down Menu

    • Customization: Heroes | Interface
      • When I use hero customizations their "selection screen" icons change into black ones!
        A "feature" introduced with Patch [1.0.11] is causing this bug.
        Hero Resource Unloading
        Mainly some memory management optimizations.
        If you frequently crash after playing multiple games in a row, this should help.
        Workaround by DerKhemist
        • Solution I - Remove the customized icon. (Use WinRAR)
          1. Open the *.s2z.
          2. Expand the folders until you find "hero.entity" and open it.
          3. Find -> icon="heroname_icon.tga" (e.g. icon="scout_icon.tga").
          4. Rename it into -> icon="icon.tga".
          5. Save!
        • Solution II - Workaround. (Use WinRAR)
          1. Create a folder anywhere you want (Hint: Create "icons" on your desktop).
          2. Open the *.s2z. Copy the heroname_icon.tga (e.g. scout_icon.tga) into the folder "icons".
          3. Delete "scout_icon.tga" inside the *.s2z.
          4. Add the folder "icons" into the *.s2z (Drag & Drop with WinRAR).
          5. Open "hero_entity" (Textfile, inside the *.s2z).
          6. Change -> icon="scout_icon.tga" <- into -> icon="icons/scout_icon.tga".
          7. Save the changes!
          8. Cleanup: Delete the folder "icons" on your desktop.
      • I have black & white squares in my in-game interface.
        Apparently you played with the mods in the "Alternative UI" category and did something wrong. [Problem using F-Hud]
        Those black 'n' white squares indicate that you're missing textures. Make sure that you have them uncompressed correctly.
        Don't forget to disable all unnecessary UI elements with Movable Frames.
    • Customization: texture.s2z & Splash Screen (Logo)
      • I have some files here but they are not .honmods! Help?
        I'll give you two simple examples starting with the "Monkey S2 Logo".
        Don't forget to backup any files you overwrite while doing these changes!

        Open your HoN folder (~/HoN/game/). You'll see two compressed files.

        • resources0.s2z -> entities, model.mdf etc.
        • textures.s2z -> everything "model" related, like bones, the announcer text etc. are "stored" here.



        1. S2 Trollface Logo
          1. Download this file. (Backup)
          2. Open textures.s2z (with WinRAR) and expand the folder tree until you find:
            textures.s2z\00000001\textures\logo.dds
          3. Open the folder with the saved (and altered) logo.dds and overwrite the default logo.dds via Drag 'n' Drop. Press "OK".
          4. The picture below is your new Logo, congratulations.

        2. Moonlight Caldavar by Veldt
          1. Visit this thread and download the Caldavar ZIP-file you want to use.
          2. Extract the Step 1 & 2 folders and read the manual. Replace the two .s2z as described.
          3. Open textures.s2z like you did before. This time you can overwrite folders instead of single files or overwrite every file one by one.
            Backup the files or you might have to reinstall after every patch!
          4. Open both textures.s2z and the moonlight.zip.
          5. Expand the folder tree (Step 3) in the moonlight.zip
          6. Drag 'n' Drop the "00000000" folder into textures.s2z and press "OK".
          7. Your Caldavar is much more beautiful now, congratulations.

    • Customization: Bind a message (GGG)
      • How do I type a multi-colored GGG over multiple lines in <1 second?
        Open documents/HoN/game/startup.cfg and put these lines at the end of the config file.
        Edit the keys to your liking.

    • Tournament Rules, playing without mods
      • I want to play with tournament rules but I can't because of mods!
        You have 2 options, the clever solution or the dumb (permanent) one.

        Clever Solution
        1. Open the console (CTRL+F8).
        2. Type "fs_disablemods=true" (Without ""), press return.
        3. Close the console (CTRL+F8).
        4. Close HoN.
        5. Start HoN, play a tournament game.
        Undo with "fs_disablemods=false" (Without "")

        Permanent Solution (One step at a time, try again after each step!)
        1. Disable AND apply all mods. Delete all mods in HoN/game/mods.
        2. Delete all .s2z in HoN/game except resources0.s2z & textures.s2z.
        3. Delete startup.cfg in Documents/HoN/game.
        4. Reinstall HoN.
    Workarounds
    • Editing the *.xml
      • I want to change something in the *.xml but I don't know how!
        I recommend WinRAR because it doesn't cause strange bugs (like 7ZIP or WinZIP).
        Steps A and B are only necessary 1 time!
        • A. Extract a *.honmod file (doesn't matter which one).
          You'll see at least 2 files (icon.png, mod.xml) and occasionally .package files.
        • B. Open the mod.xml via right-click and "Open with". Set Editor (Notepad) as "Default program". A text window will now pop up. Close it. Delete the extracted files.

        1. Now you can edit the files inside the *.honmod (without extracting anything). It's as simple as that!
        2. Open the *.honmod file (double-click). Open the mod.xml file. It should be a text file now, not a microsoft .xml file.
        3. Change anything you want in the folder (e.g. the MoF and MovF dependencies, the appversion or the icon)
        4. After you change something, don't forget to save. A WinRAR pop-up message will remind you.
      • Workaround for errors caused by outdated .honmod files. (Message: This mod was written for Heroes of Newerth v-0.*.*)
        1st Workaround (easy)
        1. Start HoN.
        2. Open the HoN_ModMan. This window will pop up. Ignore it.
        3. Enable the mods you'd like to "bypass".
        4. Close HoN.
        5. Close the HoN_ModMan and apply the preferred mods.
        6. Restart HoN.

        2nd Workaround (Medium) (Extended Guide by Elewyth)
        1. Open the mod.xml.
        2. Search for appversion="-0.3.*" and change it into appversion="-1.*.*". If you change it into appversion="*", version check will be disabled completely. Close the text file.
        3. Wait for the window below. Click "Yes".
        • If you want to prevent an auto-update edit e.g. version="1.0.0" into version="1.0.1".

        You can also extract the archive, change the mod.xml and save the folder again as a .zip file. Rename it into .honmod and drag it into your HoN_ModMan.
    • Removing MovF & MOF dependencies
    • Editing the Icon
      • Adding an icon into a *.honmod.
        1. Create (48x48 pixel) or download an icon and name it "icon.png".
        2. Open the *.honmod.
        3. Use drag & drop to put it in.
        4. Save the change.
        5. Close WinRAR.
    • Old 1.0 Shop
      • Console Commands
        Workaround by Kjai

        If you want to change the shop for ONE HoN session, you can open the console (CTRL + F8) and type

        -Enter Key-
        reloadinterfaces
        -Enter Key-
        If you want to KEEP the old shop settings EVERY TIME YOU RUN HON, you have to open the console (CTRL + F8) and type
        Code:
        SetSave "cg_usenewshop2" "true"
        -Enter Key-
        NOTE: The second set of code ONLY applies to the next time you play HoN and forward, so you MUST restart HoN in order for the shop changes to take effect.
        + When you use SetSave, you MUST HAVE THE QUOTES AROUND THE TWO COMMANDS AS ABOVE.

        Use the new shop again?
        "cg_usenewshop2 false", simple as that.

    The incredible Bangerz created outstanding libraries which are required by an increasing number of mods.
    Add functionality that other mods can use. You won't gain anything by using these unless another mod requires you to do so.

    • Tips for new Players
      1. Don't give up. Don't stop playing - this is a great game. Everybody begins in a small way.
      2. More experienced players will discourage you in many ways. Don't take it too hard. No one likes losing.
      3. Read Guides. Memorize all heroes, spells and items.
      4. Play practice mode to know the graphics of all spells and items. You'll play better if you know what your are up against.
      5. If your team wants to concede then accept it. Don't stall.

      The 2 mods above will likely cause errors after every patch. Disable them and wait for an update. Don't forget to update HoN itself!

      • [Download] Quickstart Practice Game (Silv3ri) (Adds a little button, on the top status bar, that allows you to quickly create a practice game)

        1. When starting another practice game without restarting HoN, the Test++ button doesn't show up.
          Solution: Press F10 twice (enables/disables the game menu) or use your own hotkey to toggle the Test++ windows (can be setup in the Test++ Mod Options).
        2. When using Ctrl+Click to quickly spawn units, the next time you're using a target ability it spawns the last unit again. (engine bug?)
          Temporary solution: Spawn the last unit without pressing Ctrl (this will change the cursor back to normal).

    Game Enhancements - In-Game



    Cast Range Indicators render "Practice Mode" useless.
    You won't be able to use any items or abilities while using these mods.

    Customizations: Read First | HD Models / Effects / Textures | DotA Ports | "Grey Area" (Customizations sub-forum)

    [READ FIRST]

    • HD Skins are primarily designed for graphic settings set to HIGH and ON, Texture Filtering set to MAXIMUM.
      If the game runs smoothly with theses settings and without any model replacement yet, the mods you find here shouldn't cause any trouble.
      Tweak the settings and try to attain at least 60 fps.
    • These mods use a vast amount of memory and may result in a game crash due to memory leak.
      Solution: Restart the game from time to time.
      If you have at least 2 GB of RAM and a 512Mb video card you should be able to play several games without crashing.
      PogS made special 512x512 versions for low end PCs.
    • If you experience video card overheating, visual glitches, freezes or video card resets (a problem caused by nVidia drivers) try running the game in OpenGL rather than DirectX.
      You'll experience a slight fps drop when using OpenGL, but the mentioned video inconveniences should stop.
      To do this, add the following parameters to your HoN shortcut:
      1. Right click on the shortcut, click properties and you'll find:
        "C:\Program Files (x86)\Heroes of Newerth\hon.exe"
      2. Add -vid vid_gl2
        "C:\Program Files (x86)\Heroes of Newerth\hon.exe" -vid vid_gl2
    • Do NOT use different skins for the same hero.
    • Don't get carried away. Any replaced model increases the risk of getting more frequent crashes.

      These mods don't overwrite any vital files! To remove a mod delete the resources****.s2z-file you downloaded.

    • What about custom hero modifications, what can I do?
      • Basically you have to remove the hero.entity in the customheromodel.s2z and replace it with the current hero.entity of resources0.s2z/hero/<heroname>/hero.entity.
      • If there is an alternative avatar available, you have to edit the hero.entity in a way that you'll have the default model all the time.
        If you don't do this and someone uses the alternative avatar, your custom hero will be replaced by the alternative avatar.
      • Before you replace the hero entity double-check important values like icon="icon.tga" and use these values for your new hero.entity.
        Most custom hero models have altered icons or a different path to the model, e.g. icon="sylvanasicon.tga" for the Sylvanas Windrunner Model.
      • Good luck, just tell me if I have to be more specific.


    • Folder Information (resources0.s2z, textures.s2z)
      • resources0.s2z
        • .entitiy ->hero scripting, e.g. the hero.icon, abilities etc.
        • model.mdf -> file for animations and sounds
        • high, med, low.model -> determined by your computer settings
        • .ogg -> sound and voice files
        • .effect files -> trail effects etc.
        • This archive is for models, sounds, and hero features.
        • If you want to edit texture related files (.tga), make sure to rename them (as mentioned above)
      • textures.s2z
        • 005 -> low, 003-> medium, 000-> high textures
        • The textures (.dds) are determined by the folder path in the resources0.s2z entity files.
        • The path specified by e.g. the hero.entity (icon.dds) is used first. You have to alter the entity if you want to use e.g. another icon
        • You can use ../ in the material files to change the texture folder. I use this for the announcer mods.
        • Texture mods are a bit tricky but they can be done. Here are some examples: DarkUI (BitE), Moonlight Caldavar (Veldt), Changing the Splash Screen.
        • If you want to learn more about textures read PogS "Skinning Guide"

    Update the mods before you apply them!


    Keep in mind that mods may not work after a HoN patch.

    If you get an out-of-date error:
    1) Update the mods first.
    2) Disable not working mods.
    3) Re-download the pack in a few days.
