In order to provide a friendlier environment for new players I suggest implementing a basic hero role description at the hero selection screen. Doing so may help alleviate common misconceptions about the games mechanics. For example, many new players I have spoken with are left with the impression INT heroes cannot be carries (torturer, puppet master) or that strength heroes are what they perceive to be as tanks, even though a strength hero can be support (accursed). Moreover, I feel this will greatly compliment the in game recommended items tab allowing new players to understand why X hero gets Y items.
For example, instead of seeing a new player buy iron buckler and helm of the black legion on kraken...
Another example when a hero can have multiple roles

Why? New players are useless anyway, anyone able to play a hero to a useful extent probably knows what it does already.

I have seen players with over 150 games played try to build kraken as a tank, simply because they still lack a rudimentary knowledge of hero roles. Not everyone takes the few seconds needed to read a guide and general role of a hero on the training ground forums.
New players, when attempting to construct team composition, typically request for a "tank" and will pick a STR hero. There are really no traditional tanks in this game besides legionnaire, thus this common misconception leads to the people who build kraken as a tank despite good intentions. This suggestion is obviously not geared towards more experienced users, but given the influx of new users for open beta it only makes sense to help them understand the very basics of team composition.
Also may I ask how would implementing such a feature hurt the game? It only helps newer players while more experienced users need not pay attention to it.

my main issue with this is that roles are not static for each hero.
Take engineer for example. Build blink dagger and his role could be initiation. Build DPS items and his role could be straight DPS. With tinker and turret, his role could be pushing lanes / towers. With keg, his role could be ganker. It has more to do with personal play styles or what the team makeups are alot of the time as opposed to just the hero you pick.
Edit: possibly a more effective manner of communicating hero roles to new players would be to implement a tutorial section on hero roles to give the idea of some of the various things you can do.
Of course not. Some heroes have multiple roles depending on their skill build and items, thats why I put "role(s)" in the title. For instance slither could be considered the following: Babysitter, Initiator, Roamer, ganker, pusher. This could still be applied in the hero selection screen.

Agreed, but having this information present at the hero selection screen would go hand and hand with it. For example, the tutorial shows them an initiator, ganker, babbysitter, hardcarry etc. and one or two examples of each. Once they have the basic premise of the hero role down they can see heroes that fill similar roles at the selection screen that they did not have time to demonstrate in the tutorial.
This. People don't need to hear everytime they pick up corrupted disciple he can be a carry/ganker/support/supercarry/ward***** on top of the junk already rammed down their eyeballs,
besides: Who says that a hero has to fit into a role? Sometimes i like my carry hellbringer or my ward ***** magebane.
But Kraken has one of the largest models and you mean to tell me he's not a tank?
