View Full Version : [Vadi UI Mod] perma tooltip + health as numbers

Vadi
08-11-2009, 04:25 PM
Disabled as of 0.1.36, pending an S2 decision on this: "because some people felt it wasn't fair and we haven't made an "official ruling" yet on whether or not we want to make that [health/mana numbers] available".

Whats this mod about
This one makes the hero tooltip be permanent and displays their current/max health instead of their hero name.

Useful on all heroes, especially when playing Legionnaire.

This may be a dumb question since I'm fairly new to the Beta, but is HoN intended to have 3rd party UI mods like WoW does? It would be nice to be able to have mods to make the UI look how you want and rearrange things eventually.

Or are these more from someone reverse engineering the UI layout files?

You don't get to do that. It's based upon a file not made by you.

If you'll be wanting to use that location, then extract the ui folder and place it like that. Otherwise the resources file goes into the original installation directory.

Can you also color code the health? Green at 70-100%, orange at 40-70% and then two shades of red and darker red for 20-40% and 1-20%?

I thought about this, but the point is to be able to see the numbers clearly. A red number is harder to see. If you can see the number clearly, you'd then probably understand the state their in (+ the bar is there)

This type of mod might lead down a dark path. Doesn't this mean that you could make a mod that displayed a giant arrow over someones health that is below axe's execution threshold?

Sure. I don't see anything dark about it either. It won't press the button for you (by that argument, making the interface more cluttered and complex can then be regarded as 'skill' if you figure it out).

As long as the mod couldn't automatically target them or use Decapitate for you it's not broken. You still have to use the ability yourself then.

WoW went through alot of this developing their UI and macro system. They can't play the game for you, only give you information differently or give you different widgets to click on.

picklefish
08-11-2009, 05:18 PM
One problem with WoW which they removed a few years ago was the "how close is target from you" option to where you couldn't actually tell. So hopefully you can't access distance from target here either.

I'll make another one where the normal tooltip is the same + you have the numbers above it.

Had difficulties moving the tooltip to begin with, thats why this one came first.

and no, no tutorial... just open the files and study them.

Customizeable UI's As long as it's just modifying how we're shown information already available I'm ALL for this. This is what's gonna set HoN above the rest! Good work man, wish I knew Lua and I'd help with this crusade.

You wont be, people made custom interface stuff in Savage 2 all the time, you can't add in what's not already in the game, this is just another way to show information already attainable in the game.

They're fine with this in Savage 2... they've said HoN will be "100% moddable". I see no reason for this problem, and the fact that this thread is still here is a factor.

I could not agree more with you. But the same arguments in WoW were not viewed the same way.

For example, the health mods that allowed you to see an ordered list of the people with the least health (for healing) was viewed by many to go to far. Of course, a similar mod would not be as helpful here, but it seems to me that there are going to be some things that you can do that a lot of people will see as giving you an unfair advantage.

Even the mods your talking about now, really do give you more information, especially when you have a hero with true damage skills.

edit:
Its probably unfair to say they give you more information. However, I think it is very fair to say they package the informtion better in a way that is more intuitive and easier to use. That itself translates into something tangible on the field.

I wont lie, i think mods like these are a bit dangerous, makes creeping etc a bit easy...

Not saying mods are bad... this just looks a bit dangerous to me, I think we need to draw a line somewhere between acceptable mods and ones that are abusable.

Timing your hits will be very different with an addon like this.

Numbers for Heros+buildings would be sweet tho.

The thing is, once this sort of development hits its stride its going to be a lot more powerful than people realize.

For example, you could make it display a giant arrow over a creep which is in last hit range, which could even factor in your specific heroes damage range and items. A more advanced system could highlight a special ability when it could be used to last hit. An even more advanced system, might only highlight a special ability for use when it will last hit 2+ creeps.

Another huge help would be to have enemy Hp bars on all creeps and heroes colored red and all ally hp bars colored in green.

LoL did it perfectly.

I find sometimes in huge clutters of creeps its hard to pick out mobs because all the hp bars are identical

S2 temp-banned it. That is dumb.

You can already see the information on screen, it's just moving it to a more convenient place. Utterly stupid to have a "decision" pending.

Hey Vadi, I thought I had pmed you but apparently it never went through. Instead of retyping it I figured I'd just post.

Since numbers like hp and mana are available, I assume armor and magic armor are also available. I figure the display would look something like this...

35%/10%
1700/600

Then you know when that 400 damage nuke is going to finish them, instead of leaving a blinker with 10hp.

What are everyones thoughts on this idea?

A mod like this is still possible, it's just a bit more work. I'll publish my version someday since it'd probably be considered "unfair" that not everyone has access to such a mod.
I personally don't think it's of that much use since it's just cluttering the screen with more numbers; even if you display values like effective magic health, mana, etc.

Bard
11-02-2009, 10:16 PM
and then they'll lock even more triggers to kill it again :\
till the "less info equals more skill" idea dies it's useless to go that way imho, but again... send me your mod to me on irc next time you're there :D

Yeah I don't think this is game breaking at all, but if people find a way to evade their "fix" (which probably isn't hard at all) they will just lock down even more ways, just like Bard said.

This helps a lot more than just Legionnaire's ult.

For example, it can help a succubus quickly determine when her combo can kill without having to click on the enemy + look at the bottom of the screen. Same goes for thunderbringer and pyro.
